Man... I just replaced a mercruiser pump yesterday. I have an OMC i need to change. I was cussing mercruiser the whole time i watched this! Thank you for your video!! I will likely never buy a mercury ever again as a result! Awesome video!!
Thank you for watching our video and for your comment John. Mercruiser can be difficult I don't know why they didn't do the same thing as OMC does. But with a little practice it's not too bad to put them back together
Thanks for the video! Helped me change my impeller on my Yamaha sterndrive. If Yamaha got one thing right it was stealing OMC's design! Although parts are getting harder to find. Keep the videos coming, I love working on boats!
Thank you for the video. Just bought a boat and took it on her first trip and overheated. Pulled the impeller off and it and the housing was melted. This is going to help me replace that and hopefully get back on the water.
Hey Outdoorsportsman thanks for the info. I just bought and old 20' Starcraft with the 5.7 and cobra stern drive that I know nothing about. the engine was froze up so I pulled the outdrive and engine out and am in the process of replacing the engine. I bought a water pump kit and thought I would have to drop the lower end and was pleasantly surprised to see the way it's really done. THANK YOU . I don't know why the Cobra has such a bad name, looks like they had the rite idea to me. I have subscribed to your channel and hope you continue to make these videos on the OMC set up. keep up the good work and thanks again.
+A.B.59 Hey 59. Thank you for contacting us and letting us know that you enjoy our video OMC Cobra sterndrive are a fairly good built unit. I guess it's lot of people just don't like them but we were glad that we were able to save you some time on changing that water pump and thank you for subscribing to our Channel if you have anymore questions just let us know
Thanks for the video! A friend who is a Mercury Mechanic recommended Dish Soap to lubricate the impeller.instead of grease. You will know water is circulating because suds will come out the exhaust. I haven't done it yet, but he said when you start it up at the dock it is hilarious, but you know it's working
Great video, Thanks for sharing! This will help cross one more item to be repaired off of my list. Then I have to tackle a faulty trim and we should be good to go. I'll look for those repair videos next!
Thank you so much for your video. I truly appreciate it. I have a question. That little rubber tube fell into that hole. I’m stressing. Any suggestions on what I should do?
You're welcome and I'm glad I was able to help you. Thank you for your input and for watching our video. Also it was very nice talking to you on the phone
Thank you new to your channeli Gabe a 205 Sundowner that I am trying to clean up and service the stern drive the entire inside of the boat has been redone and a lot of work on the engine
Thank you for watching our video Bill and for your comment. Sounds like you got a project boat going there. Lot of work to restoreing one but in the end it's worth it
Hi, great video and I watched it a couple of times question that I have is that if you look at the rotation of the impeller when you take it off the boat and the impeller blades in the stainless steel housing and then put the new impeller on the boss and have the housing all greased up and put it on and then turn it to the right as you’re facing it that would put the impeller blades in the other direction. Can you check that out because the physics of it show the right hand direction rotation of the cover gives you the wrong direction of the blade on the impeller. Thank you so so much. Have a great day. Look forward to hearing from you Michael V.
Hey Mike, thanks for watching. I'm gonna check on that.I just can't this evening work it out in my head, I think the correct answer is, it doesn't matter.Because as you go forward the blades on the water pump will change. I've always put my housing on and twisted it clockwise as I installed the housing over the water pump. But I will check that out for you and get back to you tomorrow for sure Jim
Ok follow up to your question If you install the housing twisting it clockwise the impeller will be in the right angle/ position when done.I hope this will answer your question. Thanks for watching
Great video! I have as 1970 CUFM-69B. Can the impeller be accessed through the exhaust housing cover on top of the lower unit? Or do I have to drop the lower gear case? Thanks for the help!
Thanks for this video. A question that I can’t seem to find the answer to anywhere - is there supposed to be water coming out of the housing in normal operation? I’m about to change the impeller and housing, and right now there’s a lot of water coming out of it. So I’m thinking there’s supposed to be less or even none. I’ve got the new kit ready to go, but before I install it, I’m wondering what is normal. Is there any water flow that should come out of the housing, and if so, how much , and from where? If you can help me understand this I would greatly appreciate it, so that I know what to look for.
Thanks for the video. How can I tell that water is pumping through the motor? Is there a tell trail like an outboard? Or do I just rely on the temperature gage?
John the temperature gauge is a good way to tell. Also you could have a water pressure gauge installed or use ear muffs and run the motor at home on a hose and see if water is coming out the exhaust.
Thank you. I am currently having issues with my OMC Cobra Diesel. The engine overheats. Could it be that the water supply to the impeller is blocked? Any way to check or clean that?
Hello yes all OMC stern drives (gray / silver) units. use the same water pump housing and impeller. The white stern drives are different. If we can help you any further let us know
@@theoutdoorsportsmen Thanks a lot for the answer sir. I would need to change my bellows as well so if you have any videos for that it would be great but even this helps me a lot so thank you for taking your time and making video about this. Much appreciated.
I’m replacing the water pump on mine. Brand new housing and everything it’s it supposed to fit in there so tight it kinda flex’s 2-3 of the fins once it’s full inserted?
Yes sir it is supposed to have a tight fit because there can't be any leakage between the fins or the water pump won't pump You should have anywhere from three to four fins that are bent at once.
Great video, quick question, I have a 1981 celebrity with the 3.8 omc cobra. You had said that all of those impellers are the same from the 3.0 to the 5.7. my question is, do you have a part number or a link to who you recommend to purchase through. thank you in advance.
Joseph we try to stay with a Sierra, or GLM part they are less expensive than the original OMC with the same amount of quality. Just be careful for some of the ones on eBay because sometimes they have a less quality rubber thanks for your question I hope this helps if we can help you further just let us know
Thanks for the video. I did the whole thing, but my impeller still isn't getting a single drop of water into the engine. I'm not sure if my gasket seal is good enough?
You may have a closed intake at the lower unit, the hose going to the motor could be clogged or as you said might be a gasket issue at the water pump housing. Also check the thermostat. Hope this helps let us know if we can help further Thanks for your question
Thank you for the video. I just got a 1988 donzi regganza 19 that’s been seating for 6 year in all weather elements. Just need advice on how to try to bring back to life.
Thanks very much for putting out a video that actually helps. Can you confirm the backing plate that you cleaned up, if it needs to be siliconed/gasket down or just placed.
+Rick Hammer Rick, they normally don't use a gasket on the back of the plate, but if the surface on the upper gear case is pitted or has been coroaded I will then use some silicone gasket maker to just help seal the back of the plate. Thanks for your comments and question.

For a long time Yamaha put the water pumps in the same place as omc did an easy way to check is just a take off that back plastic cover on the back of the outdrive and check and see if the water pump housing is there if not than they installed it into the bottom half of the lower unit in which case you just have to remove the lower unit to replace it. Hope that I was able to answer some of your questions and thank you for contacting us
Hello yes the Is stainless steel plate is necessary and also the Is stainless cup that goes in the inner side of the water pump housing there should be 2 stainless steel pieces one will be the wear plate and the 1 that will be the cup that is in the water pump housing. I hope this answers you question if it doesn't please let us know And thank you for checking us out
Pulled my water impellernoff and there wasn't a little hose attatched to it. Shil I get a little water line and run it into the bottom of the drive? Is the hose connected to anything down there or does it just direct water down the hole?
Johnny that little hose is like a cooler for the stern drive . It takes a little water from the water pump and cools the seals etc Yes replace it if it is bad it jut goes through the hole. I think I answered your question . If not please let me know
OK removed the pump. Need to be replaced. What has happened is the hose feel down thru the hole. Any help would be nice and where the house goes and how to retrieve it.

Not to worry Chris We have found out through service that most of the time the pieces just pass small enough to wash out through the engine after you replace it with a new impela It should not be a problem if it is then you could try pulling the water inlet hose from the motor and back flushing with a hose. Glad This video help you, please check back again
Ok first you will need to purge your fuel lines of any water and change fuel filters. Make sure that any water that is left in the gas tank is gone. I would use a fuel dryer additive. The best way to clean rhe injectors is to remove them and use carb cleaner. You may be able to do this without removing them. It's worth trying. It may take running a take or two of fuel to completely get it all.Good luck. Thanks for watching
My 1988 3.0 omc cobra. I thought I had a prop slip issue. As driving the boat the engine revs up but only goes 15kms/hr. It feels like it could be clogged internally perhaps as its not a prop slip and feels the same way as of seaweed was blocking the intake ports.
That would be the first thing I would check is the hub on the prop. You also might look at something clogging the exhaust as if enough exhaust does not escape from the motor back pressure can build up also causing this. But it sure sounds like a spun hub though. Hope this helps and thanks for your question

Luis thank you for your question it almost sounded to me like you may have a burnt valve or a stuck open valve on that cylinder I would start with that and check that first. If you have any more questions or I may be able to assist you please let me know
My 1990 with 4.3L OMC Cobra stern drive will not pump water up. Ive replaced the impeller twice, removed obstructions from steering cooler. I can blow air through the system from sterndrive to thermostat. Just removed the outdrive to check for obstructions, or other sources. What am I missing to cause a no pump condition? If I use the muffs with forced water from the tap, it will circulate water and stay cool. in the lake or river no water.
Be sure to make sure that there is a tight seal where the water pump housing and base meet. Also check the steel ware plate and gasket area, the smallest split or piece of gasket missing can cause water to bypass the pump .Make sure that you also have a good seal around the water tube area where it connects to the water pump housing. Hope this helps. Thanks for your question

My brother my omc is running hot. Cleaned water jackets n risers. Water pump impeller looks new but doesn't seem to fit the cage tight like this vid. Putting the muffs on n c if water getting to engine. Can I pull the rubber drain plugs on the end of the log?
It could be that the impeller rubber is weak and cannot hold the water pressure. Also check the water pump gasket.
