    Nice Job Wayne! So I just became a VolvoPenta Owner. I enjoyed your video and will be sure to check out more of them. I've subscribed and now it's time to get out there and work on mine. Cheer's!!!!

    While I'm a retired mechanic, I don't get into the stern drive but I have a customer who's boat has the 5.7 and I have always serviced, summerize and winterized it. I didn't do it this year due to health issues....prostate crap, but he used it this year and apparantly overheated it. He thinks it's that impeller. Now I know where it is, I told him to bring me the boat and I'll do it. Thanks.

    Wayne, Thanks for the nice detailed instructions on changing your impeller. I am glad everything went smoothly after you got the right parts. I am a big fan of using antisieze on the bolts when you re install them. It makes the process of removing them much safer/easier for the next time. I think it is also worthwhile trying to research the torque numbers for the bolts. They should be out there somewhere on the net. I-boats forum has some numbers for Volvo impeller housings at 29 ft/lbs. The electronic torque wrenches for these small jobs are a good way to go.

      I haven’t ever used anti-seize or loctite but I was contemplating their use in this application. In the past when I’ve done automotive work I usually got pretty close with my “guessing” but I really should get a torque wrench someday!

    • @sailingpittsburgh
      @sailingpittsburgh 3 года назад

      @@WayneTheBoatGuy I always use anti-seize but avoid loctite. Loctite is like a glue that makes the bolts more difficult to remove.

    Thank you for posting this video. I am having an issue on a new-to-me 20+ year old boat with the Volvo Penta 5.7 where the engine does not appear to be sucking in any seawater which leads to it getting hot quickly. If I have it attached to the dock water hose it works fine and the water circulates and the engine cools down. The impeller housing looks exactly like yours and comes apart the same way as I was able to remove it today. The impeller looked to be in ok shape but I ordered a replacement one anyway because I do not know how old it is. It looked to me like the inlet should be at the top and the bottom hose goes up to the thermostat housing but I am sure it was installed the opposite way when I removed the hoses. I tried it both ways and neither caused any water to circulate as I could tell because I disconnected the top of the hose by the thermostat. I ran the dock water backwards through the inlet hose and I could feel it coming out the inlet holes in the drive unit so I don't think it is clogged or blocked. Is there something in the drive unit that forces the water through the system or is it just sucked in from this pump/impeller? Is the inlet side the top? Thank you for any advice.

    • @WayneTheBoatGuy
      @WayneTheBoatGuy  3 года назад +1

      I think... think that my inlet hose is the lower one and then the impeller pumps it up to the thermostat housing - but I’m not positive.
      Potential issues could be:
      1. Wrong impeller (like I bought) so that it doesn’t quite push water through the system
      2. Bad thermostat
      3. Clogged or bad manifolds etc.
      Good luck!

    Great video with an nice amount of humility and humour, I need to do my pair of VP 5.7’s this fall. I understood there was a second O ring around the end of the shaft that drives the impeller but according to your video not so?

    Another thing you can do to help the impeller prime….after it’s installed disconnect the hose that goes from the impeller housing to the thermostat housing at the thermostat housing. Then fill this hose with water & some dish soap mixed in till it’s more or less full. Next reconnect this hose at the thermostat housing.
    Then hook up your water muffs in the lower unit & turn on the water before starting the engine. This method makes the rubber impeller get water & some lubricant right away. It takes a bit of time for the water to travel from the water intakes, to the upper gear housing, thru the hoses in the transom mount thru the ps cooler on the back side engine all the way to the impeller housing on the crankshaft.

If you can keep one step ahead of me then I'll always know what I'm getting myself into ahead of time! ;-)

    Wayne, first, thanks fkr the videos! I have "new to me" 2004 Funship 214. Volvo Penta 5.7. I changed the impeller because I've been having overheating when running over 3000 rpm's. Overheating, along with a drip from the bottom of the pump housing. I was hoping the new o ring would fix the drip but it did not. Do you think i need to replace the entire pump housing to stop the drip (and the over heating). Thanks in advance And thanks again for the videos! Very informative and entertaining.

      Chasing down overheat issues can be tricky. There shouldn't be any dripping - so tackle that first then if there is still an issue, check to see if the one manifold or riser is hotter than the other. If so, they might be needing a change as well. Good luck!

    Hello Friend What is the difference between kit 21951346 and kit 21951348? apparently the impellers are the same measurements... I bought kit 21951346 because it was in my engine, but when the new kit arrived, I saw in the manual that it could not be applied to my engine, there was an image showing the type of housing that could not, which by the way was the same as mine and yours too! I'm from Brazil, sorry if the translation is confusing, I'm using the translator. Thanks.

    • @WayneTheBoatGuy
      @WayneTheBoatGuy  3 года назад

      I could not determine exact reasons why the one kit is wrong, but I think it has to do with some very minor differences in measurements which might be the difference between it working as intended and not working well.

    Might be a dumb question can’t find a solid answer. My water pump on the front bottoms pulley gets extremely hot almost right away when the boat is running in the water. Doesn’t seem normal but not sure?

    • @WayneTheBoatGuy
      @WayneTheBoatGuy  Год назад

      I am not 100% positive, but that doesn't seem right to me. Typically the 'raw' water is coming in to the engine at that location, so it should be cooler than it is once it circulates through the engine. I wonder if maybe the impeller is slightly oversized and rubbing the housing so hard that it is heating it up.

    • @DesertPrimal

      @@WayneTheBoatGuy yea can’t find a clear answer. It over heated once but haven’t been able to duplicate. Either way I think it is worth taking the impeller out to have a look. Thanks to your video it seems pretty simple. I will update if I find anything

      If they're 'bad' they have cracks, missing chunks, or are hardened up and stay deformed once removed from the housing. This one was very flexible, not damaged in any way, and was able to spring back into its original shape quickly.
