    My biggest struggles are building soil (which is easy to overcome with the right mindset) and the much harder task of getting my family to eat things that aren't at the grocery store. I will succeed!

    • @thereidfarm1

      I build soil with tons of biomass. We have gotten the family to eat the good stuff by making it taste like what they're used to, Kelly has gotten very good at that!

      If you plant plants that like sand you dont have to worry about building soil , which actually isn't great here cus nutrient run off in the waterways.
      There are so many that dont require rich soil or much water .. once those plants come in you can start using them to create shade and suatainable biomass by chop n dropping them .
      Once you start eating fresh food, grocery store stuff starts tasting like . cardboard ..

      Building soil is super hard and I think that’s why it’s my favorite thing to do.

    • @HDHhomestead
      @HDHhomestead Год назад +2

      Make sure your soil is covered. A naked soil means loss of energy (plants take it from the sun and add nitrogen) and loss of nutrients from being washed out by rain. Also, it means less biological activity.

    I'm in South Florida myself. I also was in the hospital at one time wondering if I was ever gonna be able to go home to my family again. Long story short I'm heading towards plant based food. No more sugar is the hardest for me but it's life or death. I choose life. I have a long road ahead but I'm working on my farm every day. I liked and subscribed great channel.

      The FDA is also killing us with their lax guidelines on the chemical additive/preservative filler agents, as well as their lax guidelines on pesticides/herbicides. 75% of the chemicals that the EU banned have actually been proven to cause significant harm to our bodies, especially if they are not used/measured properly. Also, the reason for the obesity crisis isn’t the lack of exercise, but is instead the fact that heavily processed foods/non-organic foods are much less expensive than non-heavily processed/organic foods (such as Oscar-Mayer). Many artificial hormones, pesticides, and herbicides (such as RoundUp and RBST) are also known to be extremely dangerous to human health, yet are widely used still since they are the least expensive option. Finally, fast food should be a treat and not a reliance.

    In regards to 46:13 while I was healing my stomach, salad greens caused me problems. I could eat salad greens by themselves just fine, but if I had any other type of food within a couple hours, I would get a stomach ache. Now I can, but at the time, I couldn't have lettuce with anything else, whether that was avocado, chicken, or oranges. I did find that my stomach ache could be stopped within a half hour of eating a smoothie made from fresh pineapple, fresh cranberries (frozen should be just as good), and a clove of garlic.

Love his purpose and story. I am 2 years deep with my .24 acre lot food forest in Ocala in the suburbs. Love this! Your view on it's ok to kill stuff as you learn has been exactly my motto for past couple years as I've been transforming my small yard into food ... started out with a higher dead vs living ratio and now I've improved to a much higher living to dead ratio, I'd say 80% (or more) survival rate . It's definitely a learn as you go process ... and very rewarding if you can shrug off the losses and just keep going. 😊👍

    Moved up to Weirsdale, six years ago to live on top of a pile of white sand and immediately tried to build a good soil base in which to grow stuff I had grown down in North Miami Beach . Flag down a bunch of tree trimmers with oak chips and had them dump the chips in a pile on the property and hide the chickens dig on them and spread them around pretty good . Lots of millipedes. Also, the chips helped build an awesome soil base micro rhizomes among other things I’ll kinds of mushrooms, currently growing figs, pomegranates, bananas, but the cold snaps are a killer.
