  • Dina has spent her life embarrassing herself, but after a diagnosis of stage 3 breast cancer, her occasions for embarrassment sky rocketed. It was during cancer treatment that she realized embarrassment can have a higher purpose than turning cheeks red and armpits sweaty. In 2009 she set the Guinness World Record for the most vertical feet skied uphill by a woman in 24 hours.
Dina Mishev graduated from Northwestern University with degrees in math and economics. She immediately moved to Wyoming to meet Harrison Ford and learn how to ski. She works as a freelance writer and editor. Her stories regularly appear in The Washington Post. She edits Jackson Hole Magazine, Inspirato, and Range JH.
This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at ted.com/tedx

This is inspirational. This encourages me 1. That I need to get over myself. 2. That I take life way too seriously. 3. That life is best lived deeply 4. Sometimes it's just about the story, nothing more.

I take myself too seriously. I have speech difficulties, I have weight problems, I’m an awkward person overall. The stress of not being embarrassing makes me embarrass myself. I need to engage, to calm down.

OMG me too, it’s this cycle of making sure you’re acting “normal” and not weird, but then realizing that that in itself is not normal, and then being embarrassed by the fact that you’re so self conscious and can’t human properly. I have such respect for those who can simply be themselves without worrying what others think of them; I wish I had their mindset

Love this. Engaging embarrassment instead of running from it! Laughing at my absurdity

Engaging in what feels right with honesty and authenticity is difficult for me. It's difficult to be mindful and aligned to myself when I am in embarrassing or fearful situations in which my amygdala takes over my perception. However, since I am a human being, I can practice, I can learn to embrace embarrassment, anxiety and fear, find a greater meaning in them and grow thanks to them.

I embarrassed myself today and also worried for upcoming criticisms. That's why I'm here to help my currently wanting-to-die mood. I embarrassed myself in the past so easily and recently I just got out of my comfort zone trying to erase my social anxiety, Great! Embarrassed myself again in a worst way!😫

Dina, I can’t thank you enough. From an early age I embarrassed easily. I was petrified in social settings. That feeling negatively influenced my decisions in so many ways. Now I work with veterans as social worker and help veterans overcome their mental health and substance use issues. I discovered your video today because something terrible triggered my feelings again today. You inspire me beyond words. You are a beautiful person and a role model to me. I can’t thank you enough. God bless you.

A genuinely inspiring and empowering talk. Brilliant to hear of your experiences with embarrassment and how to turn them into more helpful rather than hurtful situations. I took a lot from this talk :-) Thank you :-)

I think I'm about to experience embaressment when I supposedly walk in to school tomorrow, there is a potential I will squelch my belly in fear tonight in bed, at least that's what I thought. I will now be layed back in my comfterble bed with non complex thoughts of what my day will be like tomorrow. Thank you
