Abbath always had that Gene Simmons / Lemmy thing going on. Of course the arguement could be made that anyone in corpse paint and black and silver outfits are the extension of the image that Gene Simmons created. No one in the BM scene would admit that though. It’s blatantly obvious though.
@@IdFear666 Hmm. I've never read an interview with him. I know about his Motorhead cover band though. I listened to the first tracks and they're very good. There's an almost hard rock vibe to the sections with the solos. The brutal gets turned down a notch until the next verse. Not my cup of tea normally but it works in this case.
The croak you're mentioning at around 5 minutes was popularized on the album De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas by Mayhem. Worth mentioning for black metal history's sake.
Great review and a great album! As you say, not much variation but then Abbath has found a formula that works and which the fans really enjoy. I'm glad he's sticking with what works and what he does so well. It's also nice that both Abbath and also Immortal have released excellent albums following their parting of ways.
Never been a huge fan of traditional/Norwegian black metal but I've thoroughly enjoyed this new record from Abbath. I may even pick the thing up on vinyl.
Just listened to Outstrider the other day and enjoyed it a lot. Abbath never disappoints imo, whether it be when he was in Immortal or his solo stuff. Hope your leg heals quickly, Sam! I always love your reviews!
Hey Sam, Sorry about your foot and being in a boot. Other than that great to see you man. I'll be buying the Abbath album. It will be a black metal classic. Enjoy your summer. Will be seeing Maiden and Slipknot as well.
Just wanted to say THANK YOU for championing that first album. One of the better metal records of the decade let alone the year. This one did not disappoint, either
Great to see you, Sam. Hope your legs heals soon, lot of bands showing up in your area soon. You want to be 100% when you go into those pits. Not a big Black Metal fan, but I’ll check this new Abbath album it sounds good...🤟🏻🎸☠️
Sam Ive been a fan since Headbangers Journey and I cant believe I just noticed how much you look like Geddy Lee! Throw some glasses on man hahah. Big metal horns from Cape Breton Nova Scotia! Also as a shameless plug my band Darkened Divinity is hitting the studio Dec.16 to record itès debut ep Grimoire Heretika and I would love for you to hear it!
that voice style is found in industrial and goth bands kinda like Ohgre from Skinny Puppy also can you review the album The Process from Skinny Puppy? kinda of a HEAVY sound for Skinny Puppy
Sam great review as always. Did you by any chance tear your achilles tendon? Seems to be the injury of the moment. I tore mine about a year and a half ago, not fun. Hopefully you'll be out of the boot soon
I don't get why there's a pressure for bands to change their sound all the time, most fans just want an evolution of more of the same because that's why we love the band! Just concentrate on making more kick ass songs! This new Abbath album rocks \m/
Even for someone who thinks Black Metal is absolute garbage in the Metal scene, Abbath have a certain sound that pulls you in. The AC/DC comparison is right on the money. I admire and respect any artist who is willing to stand out on their own in any genre and say to hell with tradition, or in Abbath’s case...trends. The debut was pretty good, this is right on par with that.
Xriz I honestly feel the whole Satanic thing as dried up as far as originality is concerned. And I know people will not take my opinion seriously, especially because of my screenname. But, I have been jammin to Metal for over 30 years, and Black Metal is just the most predictable outdated genre there is. I will admit, there ARE good Black Metal bands out there such as Abbath and I will give respect to bands like Venom for blazing the trail. But c’mon...how much longer and how many other ways can you say what the general population already knew...religion isn’t your thing. And, that is there right to Free Will and Free Speech. I just think it’s lasted waaaaay past it’s shelf life.
@@xriz1211So, I just re-read this comment 4 yrs later. I take back what I said. It’s definitely not garbage for sure. I still stand by my statement that Black Metal suffers from rehashing the same old tropes since the early 80’s. There needs to be more bands like Immortal/Abbath. I think people subconsciously like anything that bucks the rules of a group/movement and stands out from the rest. That’s what drew me to Immortal in the first place.
Omg this is so great! Black Metal isn't really my jam at all, but damn this is a fantastic album! Thank you again Banger people for introducing me to something I would have never listened to otherwise! 🤘
I remember the crystal skulls, and wondered why you didn't just buy 5 of the smaller versions, and could fill them up with colored water, like "I give this album 4 full black skulls and one half red skull" or some other convoluted(but fun) system. There is another more practical system, a sort of scoring based on 9/10 peoples spending habits: "If you buy one album a year, just 1, buy this" "If you buy one album a month, buy this" "If you buy one album a week, buy this" "If you buy 3-5 albums each Saturday, buy these" "If you buy one album a day, buy this" And so on and so forth.
It doesn't matter what age he is. It doesn't matter if he's with Immortal or alone. Whenever there's a music video with Abbath, you just know it's going to be the most gloriously cheesy thing you'll see all year
The writing is very similar to the first, I'm fine with this because Abbath makes fun black metal to listen to. Great vibe, great summer music, wish it had one more song as it's a tad short.
I thought the debut Abbath was stunningly average and then Immortal blew me away with 'Northern Chaos Gods'. This one I am hoping will be at least good as Gods.
It sounds like left overs from the first but it has some good tracks. Abbath is the black metal Sasquatch. It's hard to see him in the video but once you do he's gone!
When will BANGERTV look into the shady and unlawful business of vinyl records? Why do we accept LP's cost so much? Or: still cost so much, prices should go down buy now, as in it's been 15 years since "LP's came back". Yeah, why does vinyl cost so much? I remember reading an article it was based on what each disc or vinyl record cost to make, "LP's are x2 the discs, so x2 the retail cost"-which is ludicrous! Some friends of mine play in a band and 6 years ago during the "great LP popularity" and ordered 1,000 LP's from Germany(1LP only) they would pick up on tour, it cost a total of $1,750 with covers and inserts.....so $1.75 for each record......and each record cost got cheaper for each 300 or 500 they ordered, down to $1.5 each! So why does it cost €40/$40 for a LP at the record store?? The artists DO NOT GET MORE MONEY, just because the records cost more in-store. There are smaller labels that sell vinyl for $20, and that seems like an OK price to pay, but before LP's became popular again, they still pressed LP's and LP's cost less than CD's.
Totally agree with this Review, I really enjoy Abbath's musical approach but to me this sounded like the previous one, and can't really find a song that is better than other, they're all kind of the same. Not bad but not a milestone for sure
Sadly, for me it feels that Abbath is cursed to write At The Heart Of Winter, over and over again. See how much different the last Immortal album, in his absence.
i liked the drumming on the debut record. in fact, i say it is the best part of the album. i'm not taking anything away from Abbath, but he is---in my mind---outdone by the drummer.
I thought the new album was a better offering than the first... Feels like Abbath is kinda figuring out what he wants to do with the band. I enjoyed it more than the debut, but I feel the band still needs work.
