Thanks so much!! Love how little hardware this requires and that there’s no metal parts the kids will be touching. Just made this with my husband and our kids love it!
Best tire-swing plans on the Internet. Easy to follow, simple to make, and they are free. This swing works perfectly. Thank you for posting this video!
I really appreciate your time to do this this way, I was also thinking the same thing about the metal clamps and brackets. im definitely going to use your design. Thanks!
Sweet! The only think I would add is to drill holes in the bottom so that water drains out... of course we get close to 200 inches a year, so maybe you don't need to worry about that... :)
It amazes me how people give simple crisp instructional videos like this one thumbs down. Like they have a BETTER way of doing this simple.. Very good video sir. Guess I have to make my way to (HD) Hone Depot
This is the best instructional video for building a tire swing - safe and easy to build with parts from hardware stores. I built a swing in my backyard by following the instructions here. It's been more than a month now and it's working great - thanks for spreading the knowledge
Very nice video. Your knot was a great idea and worked awesome! I used 2x3’s with a hole inside my tire instead of buying washers and crosby clamps. Worked good. Thanks!
What are 2x3's? Another thing that wasn't mentioned in the video is to make sure you drill drainage holes on the bottom of the tire to prevent water buildup and everything that comes with that.. Mosquitoes etc..
Parents - this one is the way to go. No doubt about it. No exposed metal, adjustable, and pretty easy to do. My only suggestion is don't use poly rope. Use a regular rope like he does in the video. Poly was difficult to make it work - it's very slippery and it's hard to get knots really tight. Took me quite a while to adjust mine and had to keep re-leveling the tire because the poly rope was so slippery. I think it's finally tight, but I may end up re-doing it with regular rope.
Question sir, could you avoid all the hardware by drilling 4 holes for each ‘leg’ of the swing, so 2 sets of 2 holes through the top and bottom of the tire, then feeding the rope down the top, out the bottom, up the bottom and up the top? The stress would be on the two bottom holes. You’d need double the rope for each leg but that would be cheaper
Great video, thanks, and good ideas to avoid using metal parts. Genuine question though: if you're happy to use knots in the rope above the swing to suspend it, couldn't you use knots as a stopper inside the tire, instead of washers and clamps? Wouldn't a figure-8 in the rope provide enough surface area to prevent the rope from pulling through and weight on the knot keep it tight?
Great question.........yes, it would work with a figure eight.......... the problem is as weeks go by, the tire becomes uneven and lop sided because the knots have tightened and snugged up from the weight of the kids. With the clamps and washers, it's super easy to loosen and adjust it back to level or increase the height from the ground as your kids age and get taller. Thanks.
I just recently built this and I have to say it was a breeze!! The video had no runarounds or incessant talking, just straight to the point and got the job done well! Thanks for the informative video, my kids love this swing!😊
@@deysiretcruz9253 Yeah? Find me a video with the rim? I have 4 tires i cant get off the rim that will otherwise go to waste. I've looked for other tutorials, so if you found one that'd be great
I'm not sure how much rope I'm going to need and it's pretty expensive for the type you used. Do you happen to remember how high off the ground the branch was and how many feet of rope you used? I know it's been a while but I can calculate based off of that... also you said the rope stretches but on the websites to order it warns that the rope shrinks when wet and to order 15% more than needed.. is that accurate or are they full of it?
From the ground to the branch / limb in the video, it was 14 feet ( 4.2 metres ). I would not worry about shrinkage the website is claiming. Of course buy extra so you are not short though. Good luck.
This was great!!! I got a used tire free from the tire shop, a used rope from my son who climbs, a throw away tube from the bike shop. Spent about $11 on the hardware, and it went together easily. Grandkids played on it and love it. It swings wide but not high, spins as much as the kids want. Perfect. Thanks!
You can also find used tires along the side of the road where some folks throw them out. And if you're nice you can take any you don't use to your municipal disposal facility! Hopefully they let you drop off a few at a time for free.
I made this yesterday for my 3 year old daughter; it took about an hour of time and works great! After watching a few how-to videos I settled on this one because it seemed simple and sturdy, and that's exactly what it is! Thanks so much for the video.
One of the best instructional videos on RUclips. No gabbing and wasting time about things that have nothing to do with the project. Straightforward simple instructions. Thank you
I made it! The only difference was the very first step, I used a POOL vinyl drain tube as I had extra and since the tree was short enough, I was able to just lay it over the tree with the rope inside, quick knott bringing both vinyl ends together as you did prior to tossing the wrench over and then continued to follow your instructions to the T and I LOVE it, oh, forgot, trimmed the remaining rope down and taped so the ropes weren’t just hanging around! But like I was saying, I really like it, I feel like it’s totally safe and secure! Thank you for the easy to follow instructions! Total cost was $30 but only because I paid $10 more for the pretty rope color lol, aesthetics is everything after all :)
Had to relocate one made a year ago from these instructions today. Never had a problem, kids, adults all been on it. New one up and running in 20 minutes. Thanks!
Hi Chris. I rarely leave comments but couldn’t not after this. It was one of the first videos I came across when we decided to try to do a tyre swing for the kids. Getting the rope was the main challenge but the design and execution as so easy with your descriptions - and the kids love it. Use the extra climbing rope to build a standard bench swing with a piece of left over decking and a trapeze - it’s quite a busy tree now! Thanks again.
Nice job!!...I made one for the grandson using an old atv tire. I would recommend take a 1" hole saw and putting 4 to 5 holes in the bottom of the tire for water drainage. I also fitted a piece of plywood inside so our 3 year old can sit inside it on a cushion. I agree with you...rope is MUCH better than chains or cable. Great video...thanks.
Question, sorry I’m not a carpenter but I have some common knowledge haha. What size length rope did you use? My tree branch looks similar and is about 9 ft tall
Thanks for this awesome video. I built one for my 10 yr old following these instructions and they work great. The best part is that this setup seems very safe for kids.
What a great video! Hoping to one day be able to make one of these for my kids. Any tips for cleaning the tire before using as a swing? Also, the detail you put into this video is perfect. No other video I've watched came even close to your explanation, so thank you
Wow! Thanks for that great feedback! Regular dish soap squirted right onto the tire and a scrub brush and warm to hot water will clean the tire up quite nicely.
Excellent video, thank you. My partner followed your instructions down to the last word and made a tire swing for my daughter. She loves it! Greeting from Argentina!
She'll have many years of fun with it! That's great! So glad it worked for you. Remember to check it occasionally to make sure things haven't loosened off or that the rope is frayed, just for safety sake.
Aloha, Chris. Thank you for another well-made video. A few notes for my build, I used the black Everbilt 1/2" Dock Line (working load of 650 lbs.) at Home Depot. It conveniently has a loop at the end of one side. For others who are building this swing, do not put too many layers of electrical tape otherwise you will have issues feeding it through a 1/2" stainless steel washer. And do NOT take off the tape after the rope has been cut. Each individual strand will fray and you won't be able to put the end of the line back together. No biggie though, I had to tape the line higher up and cut the frayed pieces off. Lastly, I thought I could just get away with tying knots inside the tire and skimp the additional hardware like the rope clamps, etc. -- although I did use the giant washers. Truthfully, it would work, but it makes it difficult to adjust and level. Anyway, I'm off to the Depot this morning to get those clamps. Oh, and I did go by a local Firestone and asked if I could have a tire. They gladly gave me one. 👍🏼
Can you please share a link to the wire clamps you used? I'm having a hard time finding them, here in NY state. The ones I can find are either affordable malleable iron (not suited for overhead loads, like these www.fastenal.com/products/details/43407) or $10 to $15 each for drop forged or stainless steel. Is hardware cheaper in Canada?
Well done and great video. I decided to give this a try and works great!!! There are a few points in the video that more clarity would have been helpful but I was able to figure it out. We didn't have a long spool of rope so we had to get ours cut to length and had to guess...thankfully it was enough. Also, wasn't sure how long the ropes needed to be once I put it the two ropes through the final knot. But still... job well done! Thank you for this video!!!
Glad it worked for you. It's hard to estimate since it depends on limb diameter and height that the limb is off the ground. All trees are different. Thanks.
This is great. I’m looking to build a tire swing in my new backyard for the kids. Only thing is, there’s no good branches. They all go straight up. But I’m thinking I can do a rope span from one tree to another where they split and then hang the swing from that. Just not sure how to go about that part. I’m open to suggestions.
I’m sure you could anchor to two trees and have the ropes come down together locking them together with a knot and following the same instructions from there.

Loctite and two knots for extra insurance if it loosens

This is great but I'd use a running bowline on the branch and a figure 8 for the stopper knots.
I have no idea which is better, but please explain how a running bowline and figure 8 is better.
The tire has steel cords in it and can fray the rope, I’m going to use eye bolts
The steel is only in the tread area, not in the sidewalls. All good. Using eye bolts creates a pinch point.
What do you do if you cant get the tire off of the metal from the car? Thats my problem and why i haven't built a tire swing in 2 yeards
