  • This week, three more city wells in Woodbury, Minnesota were shut down due to ground water contamination with unsafe levels of perfluorochemicals PFCs as a result of 3M dumping chemical waste in several cities for decades. Over 100 square miles of East of St Paul and hundreds of thousands of people have been effected in the cities of Oakdale, Lake Elmo and Cottage Grove. Research shows that PFCs interfere with cell to cell communication and can increase the risk of cancer. In fact, the incidence of several cancers was higher in Washington County than in any other Minnesota County. The worst part, PFCs , also called forever chemicals, are nearly impossible to remove from the environment. The ones used until 2002 have an 8 year half-life in the human body. This week, more wells in Woodbury showed contamination and had to be shut down.

    That's heartbreaking for sure, but not surprising. Another really good argument for rainwater harvesting.

    Thanks for this info. We are so overwhelmed with toxic substances in our air, water, food, etc. We can only do so much to help ourselves to be healthy.

    Ugh! There was a time where people were so irresponsible with all those chemicals. Your similar to us in a very high industrial area where the worst stuff was made and used. Were close to Flint and dealing with that mess. We also grew up joking about the Detroit River having 3 eyed glow in the dark fish which is somewhat true. Hope they can figure a way to clean up some of these messes.

    A must see movie Dark Waters. It touches on the subject of chemical dumping by these companies. If you think this type of things don't still go on, your wrong. It just hasn't come out. We the people are destroying ourselves. Thanks for sharing the details.

    I hate when companies are more worried about that bottom doll than quality of life. It happens all over some people can set their tap water on fire in some places.
    When everything is poisoned not enough money in the world will fix it. I have a daughter and worry all the time about what world her and all the others will be inheriting. It sucks because no where will be safe by that point.
    I chose Maine because they seem to take the environment more seriously. There is logging but there is incentives to have tree growth property tax reduction type deal. Most of it even city has trees which is nice they care about the clean water etc. There are still issues it just seems to be taken more seriously. A lot of other places I've lived they act like people are overreacting about flammable water or water in homes that isnt drinkable.

      Yes, I agree. This is a huge part of the reason that Kevin and I chose to start building our homestead so that we can have more control over what we eat and drink.

    Heather, thank you for this information. I knew we had a lot of chemical plants, but I had no idea as to the extent of the poison. Oh. My. Will any of these chems be filtered out by home water filters?

    • @BearBottomAcres
      @BearBottomAcres  4 года назад

      There are carbon filters you can get to filter the water of your entire home or reverse osmosis filters that will remove these chemicals from a single tap. As far as I am aware, the only areas in Minnesota that are effected are the East Metro (Washington County), Bermidji (they had a lot of fire foam from training centers there and have had to shut down wells too) and areas around Camp Ripley. I you like, the interactive map I linked in the description shows all the known sites in the US at this time.

    ps - what do you think the best solution is?

    • @BearBottomAcres
      @BearBottomAcres  4 года назад

      Unfortunately, there is no real "solution" for the chemicals that have already been dumped in terms of solving the problem or completely fixing it. Instead, these cities have to work on mitigating the problem by installing special water filters that are able to remove these chemicals from the drinking water. The only actual solution I can see is to ensure that this does not happen more in the future. In one of the articles I linked in the description, they explain how congress is attempting to limit the production of these forever chemicals going into the future.

    Can you help with reference for "171% greater incidence of childhood cancers" statistic? i can't reference that from MDH data. Thanks in advance-
    STM

    • @BearBottomAcres
      @BearBottomAcres  4 года назад

      The reference is from exhibit 89 of the State of MN vs. 3M from a report prepared by David Sunding (prior EPA scientific advisory board member) for the consulting firm Brattle Group. Here is a link to a PDF of the exhibit. stmedia.startribune.com/documents/exhibit89.pdf . I believe it is on pg 42 of the document. Scott, looking into your statement, you are indeed correct that there is not evidence provided by MDH to corroborate this report's finding. I see that later the MDH released its own research review that disputed the statistical significance of that particular finding due to sample size being too small. I will link that report here: www.health.state.mn.us/data/mcrs/docs/rpteastmetro.pdf . I will do further research and if I find that there is enough evidence to reconsider this statistic, I will edit this claim out of the video. Thank you for your attention to this detail. I want to present an accurate representation of facts. ~Heather

      The gutting of environmental regulations typically results in indiscriminate dumping of hazardous waste. While he doesn't want to pollute the environment, he doesn't understand (as do a most people voting for less government) what regulations are for.

    • @mx500a4

      @@ecocentrichomestead6783 Its also fair to say that corporations have hijacked our government, and use regulations to stifle their competition. All government regulations needs to be under extreme scrutiny, typically whatever the bill or regulation is supposed to do, it ends up doing the exact opposite, (most of the time, not all the time). I am pretty much an anarchist, I don't trust anything the government does, they are all liars, cheaters, and thieves.

    • @BearBottomAcres
      @BearBottomAcres  4 года назад

      This is such a tough subject for me, because I can argue both sides. When things like this happen with big corporations, punishing them after the fact doesn't help correct the problem because it is too late, the damage is done, so I can see how more regulations could possibly help to prevent these problems. However, I also see how regulations hurt small scale farmers by making it difficult to compete as Joel Salatin is so passionate about saying so it is a complicated issue.
