I wasn't sure about getting over my aversion to bitter taste, but all those benefits? You may have just won me over. Way to go Heather!😃👍

Great video. I grow them every year. I love the way the blooms smell.
Thank you!
I am loving these science videos!

I've never tried bitter melon but prepared with lots of butter sure makes it look tasty! :)
Hey It's a Good Life butter = better. It’s food math. ~Heather
Antiviral...And helps diabetes. .. I will have to look into it more. Thank you.
You are welcome. ~Heather
I am a very adventurous cook and eater. I tried bitter melon once and just could not get into it. However, this video has encouraged me to try again with your recipe and tips. You put so much thought into bringing us this advice. TFS
Thank you. I could totally see you being adventurous.
If you use the correct spices, you can eat anything! Spicer the Bitter (Better)! ;-) Art in CA
Great point! Thank you for watching :) ~Heather
I have been meaning to grow this for years for the health benefits alone. My mom loves bitter foods and really craves them in spring when all the bitter green edible weeds start growing. She eats bitter spring tonic salads a lot and claims it helps clear out her winter eating habits (fattier, denser foods traditionally). I need to see what she thinks of this!
If you've had sushi with the seaweed wrap, then the taste of this recipe reminded me of that the first time I made it. Compounds in bitter foods have been studied for their ability to suppress appetite through regulating leptin levels, so this bitter diet would have a scientific basis for sure. ~Heather
Over 30 years ago my Dad made friends with a man at his job, Duck (because we couldn't pronounce his Viet Nam name). Dad gave him and his wife an area of our garden to grow their bitter melons. We never tried them but those vines grew huge plants. I do know when cucumbers don't get ideal growing conditions or enough water, they also can be very bitter too. Those go into the compost. I like some bitter greens but not sure I can handle these if they are more bitter than the cukes I have tossed. 😂🤣 I guess it falls into the I know it is good for you but I "ain't" taking cod liver oil ever again either! Carry on. Good video though. 👍
I love that!! That is so generous to give part of his garden to someone else.. I'm always trying to get more beds added. If you want to try them before you decide or not, you can find them at Indian and Asian markets. Slice it super thin and then you can let it sit in salt for 20-30 minutes before you rinse and cook.
Very educational and well put together! I have heard of bitter melon and wondered if it really tasted bitter. Thanks for sharing your recipe too! Loved the thumbnail 😂😂
Thank you. I am glad that you enjoyed it. Yes, it is the most bitter food I've tasted. ~Heather
Ohhhhh it makes me hurt thinking about it. I would try it though because, well I'm not right I guess. Good video! /Jim
Ozark Mountain Goats it can definitely be made less bitter by slicing very thin and putting it in salt for a while before rinsing and cooking. ~Heather
@@BearBottomAcres I usually try anything at least ones. lol. When you get a chance check out our latest video. I think you'll enjoy. Have a very very Merry Christmas!
Very interesting and informative Heather. We're not too fond of bitter foods or bitter hoppy beer but bitter melon seems like it would definitely be worth growing.
Almost Homestead it’s a beautiful vining plant. I’ve heard some people grow it as an ornamental. ~Heather
I want to wish you both a Merry Christmas and a great New Year. Thank you for the entertaining & informative videos over the past year. I look forward to continuing viewing your videos next year. God Bless you. Art in CA
Arthurs Realm oh this comment!! ❤️ thank you so very much. I’m smiling reading this. Merry Christmas to you, too. ~Heather
This is great! I just found a recipe for bitter melon soup in a Chinese cookbook from the 70s and I got excited! Got my seeds already so I can't wait to try it! 💜
That sounds interesting. I've not done a soup yet, but I've tried it tacos and it was pretty good. ~Heather
@@BearBottomAcres in further digging I have found recipes for stuffed bitter melon, bitter melon and pork, which I know you don't eat but it seems to be very versatile!
Sweet T my friends from the Philippines eat it that way 😊
My mom will cook with a lot of bitter greens but I don't recall her cooking bitter mellon. I'm going to have to ask her about this.
Sounds good, let me know if she has any good recipies. ~Heather
Well, I have been looking at it in the seed catalog but haven't pulled the trigger yet. Thanks for sharing!
I've been eyeing some new varieties.. the type popular in South China is more smooth and bright green, where what you saw in this video is more like the "karela" that they eat in India. Baker Creek has several this year. ~Heather
Still not convinced... >.> LOL! I appreciate the video, however! :)
Well, I tried.. can't win 'em all. ~Heather
We tried bitter melon this morning in scrambled eggs and sausage. It was horrible but I didn't salt and soak first. I will try that next because of the health benefits. My question is have you tried dehydrating it and grinding up for smoothies and if so does that take away bitterness?
I want to try it but I’m weary, some are saying it can be toxic....
Can you impart some wisdom for me?
Yea this thing is dangerous. I tried seeds and almost dies!
I'm not brave enough. I'm chicken. I'll stick with potty meat gravy.
your chicken?! The guy eating spam pudding and jello salad?
If you can eat mystery meat then you're not that chicken. ~Heather
