My favorite quote as you stir. "This better turn blue"
Man you are hilarious...I was totally laughing like crazy about when you said "There's no way that brown paint is going to turn blue when I put it on the cabinet". Thanks man...made my day!
***** Sadly, it WAS Brown Paint.
"This better turn blue." Amazing
45:17 - Every couple years I come back for this gem. SKATE OR DIE!!
"this better turn blue" 😆
The Journey restore sure is living up to its name :D
I love you John for sharing it all with us. I feel for you every time I see the brown paint. Thanks again for all you do. Watching Journey again.
Watching again. Love that you shared everything with us John. Much appreciated. Brown paint,,,got to go put on my John's Arcade paint shirt now. Thanks again.
I use to take auto-body in high school, and we use to use these sticky cloths that you could get at auto parts stores, it worked perfect! for cleaning up dust you can't beat em', we used it in between coats to get any dust that may have settled in the paint booth.
stirring the pot "this better turn blue" lol
Elvis Costello - Almost Blue
I love how @46:12 you continue to stir the paint despite your disbelief. :D
Make sure you're careful with a propane heater. Keep some ventilation going, and get a CO2 alarm installed in your garage or inside your house (next to the door leading to the garage- or both).
Awesome 2 last videos John. I also always like the musical interludes that you put into your videos. The game and cab are so close to being done cant wait to see what it looks like.
John I love you. Just watching the Journey series again and just hit the "brown paint" section. I had the same reaction as last time. Such an honest reaction. Keep up the great work!
John the part with the paint being the wrong color was hilarious!!! Can't believe they mixed up the color with someone elses. LOL!
This is why I love your videos! So impromptu and real. Can't wait for this to be done, but it's nice to see others struggle getting these projects done. It's good to see how much work goes into this stuff.
absolute classic youtube
Hi John, thank you so much for this video. I'm about to start this type of work for my cabinet. You definitely are a good help.
Hello again my friend. It is just such a joy to watch your videos and be a part of your journey (no pun intended) as you bring these wonderful icons of our childhoods back to life. The love and care that you put into each step is very evident to those of us who wait with baited breath each and every week for the next installment. I can guarantee you that the original manufacturers didn't put near the effort into the machines that you do, and you have elevated it into a work of art John! I just wanted to say that. Not trying to get all emotional or anything, just wanting you to know that what you do is appreciated and I for one am in awe of your tenacity and talent! Rock on good sir...rock on!
I didn't know whether to laugh or cry for you when it turned out they gave you the wrong paint.
This journey seems to be going on for ever. I laughed my ass off when you opened that paint up in disbelief. It looked like from the bends in the paint can that you had opened it before. You can tell you are like me when painting I hate it also. Looking good.
Bryan
Nice work John bummer about the paint though.. all well all this prep work is going to make your final product look awesome!
You definitely don't want a brown Journey. That sounds like a bad road trip!
Great vid again John, lots of tips to take note of for when I get around to painting my MAME cab and scratch build Pac-Man cabaret.
Great work my friend.
as a hobbiest EM pinball restorer' and classic arcade player watching your journey restore makes me want to try find a arcade machine and give it a shot have 7 EM pins and one crappy mame arcade i built good with pinballs arcade always kinda freaked me out' you made it look fun and the game turned out great keep rockin & rolling!!!
Arctic Blue? More like Arctic Poo. What a twist. It's looking very nice. Good call on removing the orange peeling. Can't wait to see the real paint go on! Great video Jon.
Your reaction to the brown paint was priceless.
Looking good!
Interesting what you said about the sponge rollers. At LOWES they have them and it says right on the package for Latex but nothing about oil-based paints, the clerk said not for oil-based but wanted to try them since you did. I've had a little hard time applying the paint and getting it uniform but going to push forward and most likely going to apply 3 coats of oil-based primer then switch over to water-based for the top coat and stencils.
Hey, John!!!
I would just like to say thanks for the tips in this vid. I am getting ready to do bondo & paint on my 2nd cab, and the tips in this vid will come in handy. Thx!!
Glad I could help. Good luck!
Great vid dude, you restored that arcade cabinet, I smell the paint
Greeting from the UK John! Love the vids by the way! Big fan. Quick thought - I'm kinda concerned you do all that sanding without a dust mask. Does it bother you at all??
Thanks a lot for posting this, it was quite informative. That extra work you put in sanding the finish was worth the effort. This cabinet is looking great!
Thanks! Be sure to watch Part 16. Cause I REALLY sand the cabinet in that episode. :)
John's Arcade Game Reviews & Tech I watched episode 16, and that is one super nice restoration. The extra buffing you're doing with that cab is making it look better than new! Can't wait to see the final episode and that cab back to it's (better than original) glory.
Just fixed my last small project on my 1990 Williams High Impact 4 player RARE cab but i love it! i love your videos John i got a lot of good tips from your channel!
Thanks, pal! Glad you like them. :)
John's Arcade Game Reviews & Tech Anytime! I watch you every Sunday! Can't wait to see the next video!!
this video is super helpful, doing this myself at the moment!
Brown paint part was hilarious! ^_^
Couldnt help but to notice the Jeep hat, John. Didn't know you were a Jeep guy! Whatcha got?!
Lol!! Stir it faster John!👍
Holy Shit finally! I have been waiting for this.
omg... are you fucking kidding me?! brown!!!!!!!!!!!!
very looking good john and make a pray next time to have the good coulour lol
Btw I've learned everything about arcade restoration from you... So thanks!!!
Pro painter tip. Lay newspaper or something under the cab so that your brush/roller doesn't touch the floor (18:15)and potentially track dust/dirt in your paint.
Yeah, I agree with this. :)
It's getting there John, I've prepped & painted alot of thing in my time, don't get me wrong - I'm no pro but don't be shy to wet & dry sand between coats of primer & also use foam rollers, you will get less orange peel effect & no random fluff ball in your paint job. & 1 other thing, put paper down on the floor so you don't get any crap of the floor on to the roller. Just speaking from experience.
I guess I should watch the entire video before commenting, I see you got some foam rollers...
I've always wanted a poop brown journey cabinet!
I was laughing so much when you opened the paint. :D
The cab is looking cracking though, can't wait to see it completed.
Great video John. But Ack! You can't use oil based and latex together. It will end up peeling over time due to the humidity that develops between the two different types of paint. I've painted MANY cabinets. Some with all latex, others with just oil based. You should always A) Use foam rollers (the other will leave tiny lint particles sometimes and an eggshell finish). B) Sand with 220 grit by hand between each coat. C) Once you blow all the dust off, use a tack cloth to remove the rest of the dust. No water based stuff (like simple green which will give it a slick surface). I usually do two coats of primer followed by 3 or 4 layers of paint (again, 220 grit hand sanding in between). Good luck!
I asked at Loews and they said no problem to use oil based primer with latex. we shall see. :)
John's Arcade Game Reviews & Tech This is a bit late as a response, but I work at Sherwin-Williams, and this is honestly something we strongly recommend against. It really messes with the adhesion if you have two different bases of paints. I hope it hold up for you!
Brody Howell The KILZ website says it is ok to use LATEX over it. "KILZ Original provides an ideal base coat for latex and oil-base paints."
Fair enough, haha. It must be an oil-modified blend. Killz isn't something I personally use, so I'm not the most knowledgeable on it's specs. Either way, I'm glad it worked out for you! Sorry for my ignorance on that specific product.
=]
blkdog7 vs brown paint
Still comedy gold!
The bug that lives inside your power plug is back !!! 32:54
and it seems to have found a new home!
John get yourself a halfway decent spray gun and an 50l air compressor. You would easily get the same finish as the factory.
Oh zoki fancy meeting you here :)
wow best video for the clueless hobist like me ... thanks man!
You and your buddy Matt have awesome music man you should make another album but I know your Arcade hobby takes precedence and I would rather you do what you like better thanks again for all the awesome info.
man.. im new to the hobby. i dig how you fix them .. i wanna try to do this one day.. but im shy and affaid.. im make more of mess then i started with
Meanwhile... some dude was rolling a nice coat of Journey Blue on his bedroom wall.
great job...looks GREAT.....lets paint the floor...LOL
I did. :)
Great video John. Too bad you couldn't start the painting but you'll get to it eventually. So, any chance you will be filming at Grinkers? Would be great to experience it for those who can't make it to Idaho.
Oh, I'll be documenting Grinkers. Don't worry. :D
Hi John, absolutely love the channel and all your videos. I always look forward to your weekly video! Just a quick question, what camcorder do you use? Thanks!
When painting cabinets, put your free hand at the top of the cabinet and push it to tilt it away from you a few degrees. This lifts the bottom of the cabinet several inches off of the ground so you can paint it with your roller without getting paint on the garage floor, or getting dust/gunk on your roller.
Nice work though.
Good idea. :)
Wow, I feel bad for ya getting brown paint...you seemed so excited for the blue (as was I)...did they give you the correct paint for free...they better....excited for the next installment ...the cab is looking amazing so far
that moment you removed the cap of the "blue" paint LOL. i'm sorry man! keep up the good work :) hopefully next time they get it right
We should have a contest for the brown paint signed by you John
Bummer getting the brown paint but at least your getting towards the end of the journey lol.
lol that ending kinda was unexpected xD
he said best paint money can buy , fucking brown paint , oh i laugh so hard !
Here's a trick for you the next time you paint, if you do. after you do a coat, mist the surface with black paint, then sand. That way, you'll know when you get all the high spots down. they also make primers that change color when sanded so you know when you have gotten it all flat.
Wow, that's an interesting technique!
I want a garage heater now. Curious how much run time you can get on that thing with a tank of propane.
Great video, I'm curious in your next video how much thinner you add to the Rustoleum to thin it down for painting without lines/orange peel.
I'm more curious if one needs a Co2 detector when running one. Having a smoke detector couldn't hurt, either. I could easily see an accident pushing something flammable about that thing's 'cannon' and getting into a world of trouble in no time. So...fire extinguisher should be added to that shopping list.
Oh, but how toasty it does look. That will keep those lethal icicles that Good Mythical Morning was talking about away from the roof's edge.
Checked out the music- I have to say not bad!
John what you took the Nutella? ahahahahahah
the grey colour would work :) glad that you could laugh it off, i would have thrown a tantrum and kicked that tin of brown paint all over the garage.
John,
Do you know of any good places to find a Battlezone main board? Preferably a working one. The guy that's fixing my ARII and vector board can't fix the one I got when I bought the machines...Btw, I got 2 battlezones, one with the shroud and the other with the open screen for $150 a couple of years ago. The monitor works, the one cabinet is in good shape the other not as good. Let me know of someplace I might be able to find a board.
Thanks,
Joe
Hi I was wondering if you had any experience with wiring an original Galaga machine. Or just any wiring experience.
0_0
Those are my eyes as soon as you removed the lid of the can of paint ...
Hey John, did you check to see if the paint just looks brown and dries blue? I know some paint, especially dark colored paint, can look like a completely different color in liquid form.
"Compressed Air" *uses leaf blower* Good thinking, haha. :D
Gas > Electric. :)
Hey John
U helped me so much with my creation of multi cabinet from bondo to using RapidTAC
I just would like to know what do u do for a living? are you a Machinist or Engineer?
and How do you keep the wife and kids down with the arcade stuff? (it can get expensive)
I would like to but I bet it would be a pain... to convince the wife.
Does your wife have a great job too?
Thanks so much and keep it up
YOU ROCK!!!!
Stevie
Thanks pal! Glad I could help. I'm a graphic designer. :)
Did your garage get a bit flooded with water? Your floor is reflective.
By the way, how did they paint these things in a factory setting? Spray brush, I'm guessing?
After watching this, I can't help but think John is such a manly man, or should I say: ALL_MAN.
Brown Journey... hahaha! Come on, be an originator, brown just *SCREAMS* the music band Journey. When it rains, it pours for John, more like hell damage.
Nice music, too. I need to look into downloading it.
I see all those particles flying around and I worry about your lungs man :( I would definitely get a particle vac and a respirator or at the very least, a cheap painters mask. Looks freaking great though, and the tunes always put me in a most righteous mood!
I don't disagree. I was sanding yesterday and was gagging. :)
Yeah man. That shit can get nasty. Be safe brother.
John ...PUT ON A MASK lol
John, so I went out and bought some 3m Sponges.. Not exactly the same mine are called sandblasted pro. These are 220 grit but I am thinking what you used may have been 180 cause the 220 Sponges I bought don't seem to have much of an effect on the primer orange peel I have on my primer. I have a lot of orange peel pattern and I am sanding the 2nd coat but even though it feels smooth to the touch, I can still see the pattern. Should I keep going till I don't see it at all or will it be OK if it is smooth to the touch? I wish I had a random orbit sander but I have to do it by hand. :(
I felt bad about the paint but it was hard not to laugh
Any idea where I can get a neo geo stencil?
Holy shit that Heater looks like its drinkin that propane for fun!
It's actually pretty efficient. I think it will last 12 hours on one tank.
How much is a tank of propane over there
Seán O'Gaoithín About $15-$20. I was letting the heater run 20-30 minutes at a time. IT heats the garage quick and the garage stays warm for awhile. I think the tank will last me a long time.
John's Arcade Game Reviews & Tech Was thinking about getting a heater like that for my garage. but i wonder what the risks of spray painting and stuff with it on.
Also can we put the song the kill screen little thing music video on johns arcade
Man most paint store's put a small dab of paint ontop to see the color I am surprised your's didn't get that it would have been an indicator of the wrong color
hey john i have a question. should i trade my working 1990 williams high impact for a gorf that needs a cap kit? kind of on the edge right now and looking for an answer i just dont know if i should and wonder what you think let me know.
I think Gorf is more desirable and classic. I would. :)
After 14 other videos I would have said F*#@ it and threw the cabinet in the truck and let my local auto body shop prep and paint it. Professionally prepped and painted in a dust free environment. There is the satisfaction of DIY but WTF lets get the Journey into the basement so you can start enjoying it and move on! :)
This is probably why Phet said it takes 3 years before someone gets to the painting because they need the color codes. Great job with the primer. Hopefully the paint will get refunded.
Yeah, I stopped at ACE this morning. No issues. He mixed me up the right paint on the spot.
what game is it that is to the right of your tempest game?
It's called a tack cloth, 2.99 a pack at advanced auto!!
"It's better turn blue!" John, October 2014
Zedai Skywalker lulz!
This has been a long Journey
I want it to end!
John's Arcade Game Reviews & Tech Should check out the arcade's in Ireland sometime :)
This is a long Journey. Huh get it?
This is not blue paint, this is brown! LoL!!!! He swore it was the best paint money can buy!
Brown paint XD
"Brown Journey" sounds like a middle-eastern cover band or a porno.
You didn't put anything under the cabinet to catch the paint! why?
Ccoolty Cause I am lazy. :) I should have. Next time...
"The Kill Screens"? More like "The Kilz Screens!" HAHAHA! I'M HILARIOUS.
surprised you didn't look at it at the store when you got it to check it.
lol. This restore. Sure has been a Journey. huuuh.
It's arctic brown, just go ahead and paint it bro.
