    As a Jordanian who grew up visiting Petra every school trip since the 1990s , I can confirm that the local bedouins actually lived inside the caves up until ~15 years ago

    • @MarkHarrison4
      @MarkHarrison4  5 лет назад +20

      Natasha Shuqom thank you for the confirmation! I read online that most modern bedouins live in houses. Would you say there are some who still live in caves today?

    • @ahmadqubo
      @ahmadqubo 5 лет назад +30

      @@MarkHarrison4 The government built houses for Bedouins in the 1980s (in Umm sayhoun) but many still prefer living in caves. some of them would leave their houses at night to stay in caves (Inside petra archaeological site or even outside ir). they feel more free living in caves .
      (I am a jordanian and this is what a local bedouin told me during a lengthy chat at petra at night.)

    • @nisrinalqatarneh1057
      @nisrinalqatarneh1057 5 лет назад +15

      Actually some still live in caves, it is an ongoing issue with the authorities who try to move them out, I think for them it is a life style they would like to preserve, and I can't blame them as it is their heritage and why not?!

    • @karawiz
      @karawiz 5 лет назад +1

      No much longer before that it was around mid seventye 1975 _1980. My first visit to Petra where in 1985 by that time the beduin where out of it.and since that time it's not allowed to live in any more.they allowed to work with tourist but no one lives in caves any more it's a reserved site and under unisco supervision

    • @elfuegoaj6796
      @elfuegoaj6796 5 лет назад +4

      @@nisrinalqatarneh1057 those who claim to be bedouin have nothing to do with Petra!! They just inhabited the caves and destroyed the city, and that's why authorities kicked them outside and bulid houses in Um sayhon, however, locals call them gipsyes, they give bad impression about Petra unfortunately, even Jordanian visitors struggle with them, they don't send their kids to school and much more..

    It makes me really sad how a lot of Jordanians don’t see the beauty in our own country. There are so many beautiful places with views you won’t see any where, and most of my friends don’t notice it. Personally, I used to be exactly like them, but speaking to tourists and hearing their points of view really makes me realize how beautiful Jordan is.

    • @MarkHarrison4

      A very common theme with most people... I didn't realize the beauty of my own country until I left and came back.

    • @Odat
      @Odat 3 года назад

      It’s because locals are barely making it financially so they don’t have the time to resources whereas a tourist is specifically there to see sites.

    • @linahussein8185
      @linahussein8185 3 года назад +1

      @@Odat maybe, but thats not completely true. Where I live, we overlook another area and you can see all of the houses from a distance and then mountains behind it. A few years ago, I was taking a walk with my friend and I told her “the view is so beautiful” and she replied with “you are speaking as if we’re looking at an ocean. You can only say this when you’re in turkey or someplace else”. Beautiful view, free to look at, and you can casually see at many places in Jordan. I truly believe that “beauty is in the eyes of the beholder.” If you look close enough, you can see everything to be magnificent. Sadly, most Jordanians are too stubborn to notice. I don’t blame them, it’s easy to lose hope in this country.

    The best thing in Jordan is the people , they. are so kind they will help you without you asking. I lived in America for 20 years and when I come back to Jordan I just want to hug and kiss everybody here because they are very human.. when it comes to money be careful like anybody else and everywhere else they might want to take advantage of you so do your thing , and be wise and shop around like I do.. until I get the best price that's all.

    I went to Jordan this pass month and Petra was so cool. It’s so much flies and I didn’t have sunglasses to block out the sand going in to my eyes.

    I have to Jordan 🇯🇴 and it was just incredible. Go to Saudi Arabia🇸🇦 if you have chance. The problem is it's like Jordan on steroids it's huge and hard to know where to go if you don't have a friend. Jordan was something incredible it was my first time to the middle east and I think I chose right.

    I'm going to Jordan in a couple of weeks after a trip around Turkey and Egypt and am excited to experience for myself the things you showed in your travel blog.
    The drone shots showing the landscapes from up high add another dimension and interest to your video. Thank you for sharing it!

    You must visit Jordan again :) ! There are much more things to see: Umm Qais, Ajloun Castle, forests in the north, Jordan River and the old churches, Salt, Madaba and the oldest mosaic map in the world, Mount Nebo, Mai’in hotsprings, Karak Castle, Wadi Mujib and Aqaba.
    And of course not to mention the amazing traditional cuisine and the friendly people

    9:26 as a Muslim Jordanian. I started fasting when I was 8 years old. It was hard, but we made it.
    bravo on this amazing video dude. props to you. I live around two streets behind the romanian theatre. It's truly a magical place. and even after many years of living here, I will never get used to the sight and the magnificent cultural sites here. I can't imagine if I didn't visit the romanian theatre 10:18 every week for several years. must've been an awesome trip to you!

    Once you visit Jordan you will never be the same...
    Your perception of the Middle East will have been altered considerably. The People of Jordan are incredibly hospitable and loving. So many beautiful and historical places to see and touch....I cant encourage you enough...Just GO !
    It's easy to fly into Amman to begin your journey. Dead Sea, Abjoun, Wadi Rum, Petra, Aqaba.... it's all so unbelievable. This American loves the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan, her King and People.
