I do believe particle style (dust release, whatever) is in fact a kekei genkai, but we have to remember, the fact that something is a kekei genkai doesn't mean people have automatic access to it. They still have to develop it, learn how to use it, etc. Ohnoki sayin that he "passed on the secrets of particle release" to him is just that. Ohnoki was capable of using particle release because he possessed the natures associated with it from birth, but it's so complex it needs to be taught almost like a hidden technique.

1: Yeah, I was technically wrong, but I was almost right. It's not a secret technique was my main point, a Kekkei Tota is just a more advanced version of a Kekkei Genkai, because it needs 3 natures instead of 2 (and I knew it needed 3 natures, I just didn't know it had its own name)
2: My reasoning was literally on point. Particle Style is both so rare because it's a Kekkei Tota, and also very complicated to learn so it has to be taught like it's a secret technique.
3: I don't exactly remember why I was explaining that anyway. It's been 2 years since I left that comment. Maybe something was explained in a book since I left the comment.

It's an extraordinarily difficult jutsu, like an S Rank Forbidden Jutsu as it involves combining chakra natures. We've already seen how absurdly difficult it is to apply a nature release to a jutsu, now try adding two more.
Mu is probably the most prodigious shinobi in the entire narrative as he is the only character to master all 5 basic changes in nature without ever having some Jesus powers bestowed to him.
Onoki and Mu also aren't relatives. They're apprentice and master. Kekkei also has a variety of meanings beyond bloodline. We've also never seen unrelated characters (in canon) demonstrate the same Kekkei Genkai, but we have with the Kekkei Tota.
It's more likely to be a highly advanced Hiden Technique that focuses around changes in multiple chakra natures than it is to be genetic.
Lack of evidence means no current support. 'Secrets of particle style' is clear cut support of a Hiden Technique grouped as a Kekkei Tota over it being a Kekkei Genkai.

There's also cellular division that's the level way above shadow clones that you haven't talked about. When a Jinto user uses it his clone becomes a second person but with halved the Chakra.

The cube and the cylinder work a bit differently. The cube traps things inside of it and then disintegrates them but the cylinder functions like a laser beam that destroys anything it comes into contact with.

there are actually three: onoki has used a cube and a cone. and mu has used a cylinder, however they all do the same thing. I also think that onoki's ability to increase and decrease weight and mu's ability to split his body are derivatives of this style.

You forgot about the second Tsuchikage's Fission technique that creates an identical copy of the user but both beings now are at half the original power. Basically fission in physics is the seperation of atoms. But in this case for the narutoverse its the seperation of a singular being that becomes two completely seperate entities that can coexist.

Most notable as a jutsu because it counters wood style and even tough techniques like susano that are slow and immobile but almost impossible to break, only the rinnegan has been shown stopping particle style through absorption, and other particle style techniques seem to cancel each other out. That makes it one of the most potent offensive abilities in the series, if not THE most potent offensive ability, higher than amateratsu, fuuton rasengan, chibaku tensei or bijuu bombs.
Onoki had mad showings during the war arc, he cleared an entire deep forest emergence in 1 second, got multiple lethal hits on madara, would have instantly killed Sasuke in the 5 kage summit arc if not for Obito. Definitely puts some other kage to shame.

I have three questions
1) If rinnegan gives the user access to all five basic nature transformations can they use the unique releases, or is there a missing ingrediant?
2) if injecting Hashirama cells into the body gives you wood release, would taking mu or onoki cells and injecting them grant dust release, or any corresponding dna and kekkei genkai releases?
3) It's kind of unrelated, but if absorbing some of the tailed beast chakra gave Naruto access to those unique releases, and since we see people forcibly remove tailed beast chakra, if someone were able to steal some chakra from each of the tailed beasts would they be able to use those releases? could they unlock the sage of six paths abilities? (just to clarify, I'm not saying they actually capture each of the tailed beasts, just that they take some of their chakra and absorb it/inject it into another person)

to make jinton sound way more powerful you could assume that it negates all covalent bonds in a trapped area. covalent bonds are the force that holds atoms together to form molecules. and technique that makes things in a separate cloud of atoms is actually very sick since it will destroy anything tangible (physical in nature (e.g. not chacra and stuff))
that way landing the jinton technique on a person is actually an instakill, because even if assumed that atoms will form bonds again after technique finishes they won't reform into a human (i mean, a stone wall will probably reform in a stone wall, maybe of different shape, but any organic matter will absolutely definitely die)
Y'all, I think the secret of particle release is just early quantum mechanics. There's something called the creation and annihilation operators discovered by Dirac, which basically describes how when a positron meets an electron, they annihilate each other, producing energy in the form of photons and also high-energy gamma rays. Clearly we see a connection with the light beams emitted from Mu's jutsu there. What's more is that if this phenomenon was perfectly contained in something like a cube which Mū's jutsu used, you would observe an accumulation of energy within the cube, primarily in the form of heat and electromagnetic radiation. So combine the annihilation, high-energy gamma rays, and thermal consequences, and you get a jutsu capable of total destruction of biological structures, not just at the atomic level, but subatomic. Wouldn't be far off to say Mū was a theoretical physicist ahead of his time.
Just thinking if particle style can be taught and not a bloodline limit would it be strange to not also believe explosion style is actually a simplified version of particle style.
This would also explain why explosion style is weak to lightning when in theory it is the advanced nature release for earth and lightning combination but if explosion style is a subset of particle style wouldn't that mean its actually a combination of earth and wind nature.

One thing worth noting about Particle Style is that much like in the Ghostbusters, crossing the streams appears to be a spectacularly bad idea, another reason to be thankful that there aren't a buttload of people running around with the Style for. Every time two pieces of Particle Style have collided for whatever reasons, they seem to breach their "containment" and just turn into a sphere of annihilation roughly equivalent to the combined strength of the two colliding jutsus. While jutsus exploding on contact with one another isn't uncommon, most other jutsus don't collide into balls of death that violently dismantle everything they touch.
