    Great video! Believe it or not, I've used a similar technique for almost 25 years, except using a KimWipe slightly dampened with isopropyl and a horsehair acid brush to move it around. I got the idea from a mid-90's Pace Worldwide video, where they suggest using low-temp hot air alone to "dry a board before rework."

    • @TheArtofRepair
      @TheArtofRepair  5 лет назад +2

      Dude! the PACE videos are Fuego!, I had a chance to have a long talk with one of their reps who was around in those days, He actually let me know that they spent well over a million dollars producing those videos! Crazy fact! I appreciate the view and comment!

      Yes sir! The new update to this video uses a clean room cloth or a Kim tech as you suggest. I assumed it was an old technique for sure haha. Tbh most of the stuff I do and we do as a whole do are already perfected in the industrial space but from a semi pro hobby space as still need 😃

      Well, I use lacquer thinner first with the paper towel, then use alcohol and the paper towel. Then I go over it with just a clean toothbrush and alcohol.

    • @robertcalkjr.8325

      @robertcalkjr.8325 5 лет назад +1

      I may try it sometime. I need to save up and get a nice US. What do you think about the Crest US that Louis Rossmann recommends?
      I will try your flux removal method next time and use my hot-air with it also. I have been using my rework station for a lot more stuff lately. I can make nicer cables and stuff using the rework station and solder paste instead of an iron, with less flux to clean up.

    Clean, clean, clean! Some people don’t like it. Oh well, get over it! Having clean surfaces enables you to see potential problems which may still exist. It also may reveal something you left undone. Fluxes may leave residual materials in suspension which can attract dirt or moisture, neither which you want left on the board surface. It’s bad practice to leave unclean surfaces and it’s unprofessional to boot! If it isn’t left looking bad it isn’t going to be another problem to come back and haunt you. Okay? It’s not that hard!

      You could probably just use the lowest setting on your heat gun and be fine. You just want the isopropyl to flash immediately. So well above room temp, yet well below melting point is all that is really needed. If your gun goes down to 100°C, that'll work too.

I've been using no-clean for a long while now, but cleaning (when needed) is a hassle since it requires other types of detergent than IPA and still is kinda tricky to get off the PCB.

  • @deankay4434
    @deankay4434 4 года назад

    Greetings, I am an auto tech retired, but it's my job to fix everything. You said your temp was 140. In engineering and diagnostics flows charts, they always give you temperature in "C" and "F". Is this 140 degrees F? As solder melts at 420-450 degrees F, I am sure it take no time to crank up the temp to work. No auto tech want to turn on the compressor while holding the air impact & socket.
    Also, I have seen many debates turn into arguments about isopropyl alcohol. Some say say crazy stuff like never use it. Is 75% work for a guy who is a part time Mr Fit It? 99% is a little expensive to have sitting around. Although, in Iowa, Nebraska and nearby, pure 100% ethanol is produced. This is not isopropyl but when aged in chard oak barrels, taste good!
    Do you have a sweep frequency ultrasound cleaner w/distilled water or special cleaner.
    Sorry to ask so many questions but sometimes it's hard to find someone who knows what works! Best practice works for me, in auto repair or electronics. I had to subscribe & like. My task (Among Many) is a dead short on my 3 year old Dell Inspiron 15. Can't afford new.

    • @TheArtofRepair

      Corrosion depends on the brand and composition of the flux. Even a small cheap heat gun from your local hardware store will help, Heat makes the flux gain more viscosity which allows it to be soaked up by the qtip =)
