My first ever winner in the National after over 15 years years of trying including when my day would put on a bet for me when I was a child. I picked him as the race coincided with an election in the UK at the time. Watching it back, he didn't put a foot wrong the whole way around, always perfectly placed and out of trouble. Big gap back to third place on the day. He pulled up in the voided race the next gear but he came second in 1995 as an 11 year old and I backed him then also - I had to stick with him being my first winner in the race :)
What a horse! I’d backed him following a tip from a guy in my class, it was the Saturday before the election and I think it was Rob Bonnet doing the sport highlights on the BBC Evening News beginning his segment “Those hoping the Grand National would be a distraction would be disappointed!” In 1995 I was on a field trip for my undergrad Geography in Morecambe, we did a sweep and I drew him out, I was gutted when he lost out.
The first Grand National where I bet with my own money. I had a couple of quid on Omerta, Cool Ground and Ghofar. However, I bought the Sporting Life on the day who said that Party Politics "Stays longer then the mother-in-law." and I put £2 on him as well. I like how at 5.46 New Halen tells Robert Bellamy he's had enough and sends him over the fence! Jockeypedia says there was a loose horse running across the fence though I can't see it.
party politics must have been over 17 hands, he makes the others by the side of him look small. Mind you loved that horse. Might Bite puts me in mind of PP
Crazy how all the spectators are just running across the track from the 24th onwards...yes the main field are well past but this is the Grand National. A loose horse could have easily caused a few fatalities. Don't think I've ever seen that before or since
Picked party politics in a sweepstakes when i worked in bournemouth. Having never missed a grand national from the age of about 8, myself and another girl bunked off form the beauty department ,ran downstairs to the electrical dept and watched it there.......in a crowd of about 10 people all around the store's T.V . Only a few raised eyebrows when we got back to our counter......
I had £25 e/w on Garrison Savannah in the 1993 race. I'm convinced he'd have won it. I remember on the news, some bloke showed his betting slip to the reporter outside a betting shop and was nearly in tears. He had a tenner each way on Esha Ness @ 66/1. Instead of going in to pick up about £730, like the rest of us, he was just going in to get his stake back - the £20 he put on.
I always remember this day so much, well done Party Politics , RIP my friend
The final Grand National commentary for Julian Wilson after 24-years. He did a superb job out in the country.
yes he did

Carl Llewelyn knew how to get it done. Fantastic jockey.
A proper old fashioned chaser
....they dont build them like him anymore...
What a giant stamp of a horse Party Politics was, him and Twin Oaks were great stayers during that era.
I was there. My wife picked the winner.

Rubika is Trevor Hemmings first National runner in this race.
There must have been many finishers that year. Looked like well over 20 approaching the final fence.

He did “win” in 93. I backed him both times, was not happy!
