It's the most "album" album there is (at least in rock music). You need to listen to it as a whole on a good stereo with the lights out, to really grasp its genius. Who today still does that?

I just wanted to say, that in today's world maybe the appreciation for a record like DSOTM is declining, because people are too distracted to really take the time to just listen and listen to the whole thing. If you still do that and other music fans you know do too - great. OfC there's nothing wrong with listening to music while doing other stuff or to listen to albums in snippets, I do that as well all the time, but in the case of DSOTM, I don't think that's the best approach to really do it justice as a listener.

Rust in peace is the best album by the big 4, if not 2nd to reign in blood. The best written riffs, the hardest hitting drums and bass, the best solos, period end of story. No thrash album holds a candle to RIP, I will fight you in the streets to the death on this.

Ngl I kinda agree that IGOR is overrated, recent listens brought it down from a low 9 for me to a low 8. Idk why, I think it’s a good album but it’s kinda fallen off for me.
Meddle better than DSOTM 💀
I prefer it much over DSOTM. IMO DSOTM loses replay value quickly. I find songs like Us and Them and Money to be boring as well. Meddle also has a lot of calm songs, but I feel like there's a nostalgic feeling behind them. The worst song on Meddle, Seamus, is at least fun to listen to even though it does disrupt the album. DSOTM does have quite a few amazing moments (time, climax of great gig in the sky, brain damage/eclipse), but Meddle has Echoes.

This is an opinion I could respect, or even that DSotM is overrated (though I disagree). But that still wouldn't justify a 7 - in my view, anyone incapable of recognizing the musical and lyrical talent on display in that project, even if they don't personally jibe with it, is not a person who's musical opinions are worth taking seriously.
Unless you're simply scoring it in some kind of list of your own enjoyment, meant to say something about yourself and what you're in to rather than the music itself, but not if you're trying to do criticism on a professional level, expecting people to take your scores into consideration and be guided by them when deciding what to try for themselves - in that case, I think you'd objectively be giving people bad advice.

@@flatmajor6802 I think the job of every critic is to voice their own opinion yes, but also try to understand what the artist was going for, whether you like it or not. Some of Fantano's most hated reviews were where he failed at that and missed the point entirely. (stuff like House of Balloons)
agreed. you have to be able to compare albums by the same artist, but saying an album is overrated just because the artist released a better one is idiotic. each album is (normally) a separate work and, if you want to be a good critic you have to be able to judge it as a standalone thing and judge it in general even if you don't like the music style.

I think fantano hates it much more then it deserves, like to day it's worse the goblin or bastard is crazy. Cherry bomb has the highest highs if Tyler's music (smuckers, 2seater, find your wings) but also lowest lows (Cherry bomb, keep the Os). Overall I'd say the album as a whole is not great, but taking individuals songs from it, some of them are legitimately Beautiful pieces of music.
My 2nd favorite album of his behind Igor. It's much better than anything he did pre-Cherry Bomb and more interesting than Flower Boy.

Saying Rust in Piece is overated because of Dave's singing is like saying a fast food burger is overrated because it was made from a frozen patty. It's expected and baked into the experience. I am a Megadeth fan and have learned to like Dave's vocals, but no one is saying he is a great vocalist. It's just baked in and expected in a Megadeth album. You don't go to that album for vocals, you go for insane guitar playing from Dave and Marty Friedman.

If the vocals weren’t important why did they record any and not just make an instrumental album, that’s a pretty weird way of you saying that you can’t accept that a fave album of your is flawed in many ways.
Honestly I like the vocals even though they are a mess. I think he sells what he's singing about and his voice fits a lot of the subject matter. Many songs are about someone being in over there head in war or anything else and I think his weak voice sells it. At least in the early albums anyway. They also make the whole thing kind of cartoony and goofy which adds a kind of charm these days. He can't sing but I wouldn't swap him out for anyone else because I just don't think they would fit.

I feel like Anthony listens to an album once and never again. Dark Side of the Moon being overrated? Its not underrated, but it's not a 7. I feel like anything not "mainstream sounding" enough is not that great in his eyes. No other album flows as great as the DSOTM.
DSOTM is a perfect album. Structure, production, performances, sound engineering, themes, album cover, and runtime. It’s a flawless record. Even though I wouldn’t debate anyone who thought Wish You Were Here is better.

Rust in Peace is perfection. The pinnacle of thrash metal and one of the greatest albums ever made. Unmatched riffs and solos, iconic drum work, insane production, unreal grooves, not to mention many people love Dave's vocals particularly between the late 80s - 90s. 'There's some good riffs', bro, every single track on that album aside from Dawn Patrol is genuinely in with a shout for being a top 50 metal song ever. Every single track. Anyone calling it 'overrated', let alone saying shit like 'one of the worst albums I've ever heard', has absolutely no right listening to metal at all. Shameful.
i worry sometimes that people hear the terrible remaster and think that's how the vocals always sounded. the original mix is solid but the remaster used like b take vocal recordings bc the original masters got lost or smth. original mix of rust in peace is a top 5 90s record

I absolutely agree with Igor, that’s Tyler’s worst album (yes, worse that Cherry Bomb). His singing across that record and the weird filter he was using was abysmal, and the lack of his usual contemporaries to carry those vocal loads like Kali Uchis, Rex, Leon Ware, etc. highlighted his weaknesses.
I always thought his flaws vocals were still great because they conveyed emotion way more then vocal technicality, and considering the concept of the album I think it works.
The Bowie take is so based! That’s the exact same way I feel, Ziggy’s good but “station to station” and the Berlin trilogy are on another level.
Station To Station is one of my favorite record ever.. just the title track itself is pure genius…!
