So many people see video game collecting as an unfortunate quality in a person, but I don't think those people entirely understand what video game collecting is. It's a hobby. Some people make furniture or create art, etc. as a hobby, and some people collect things. There's rock collectors, who buy minerals that are valuable or simply bring them closer to a complete collection, and they know what they need to know about those minerals. Sure, you could argue that some types of minerals look cool, but video games are fun. You can play video games, and, like a rock collection, you can sell them! You benefit no matter what, so long as you're smart and reasonable about collecting. But of course, the main point that those who argue against the hobby of video game collecting is that they don't have a life. Let me explain something to those people. Just because these collectors often have what looks like an overflow of video game merchandise does not mean that is their entire house, or their entire life, for that matter. You can't know how much time these people spend finding and buying these things. You can't possibly know about their life outside of what they show you. So, when they show you a room with every wall covered in things related to video games, that is all you see. When they explain what they're showing you, that is all you hear. They are only showing you small snippets of their life. Unless they mention it somewhere, you can't know for sure whether or not they have a partner or spouse. Obviously, it is possible that what some of them show you is their life, and they could be completely antisocial and reclusive. But to say things like "You collectors don't have girlfriends" and "uhhmm, you need to get a life" are extremely ignorant statements, unless you could justify those statements with evidence, which, by the way, you could only get by directly asking the person or people you are judging. I myself am not a collector of anything. But I believe in the truth, so if you're going to say or type hurtful things about video game collectors, or anyone, for that matter, just know that for anyone to agree, it must be justified. Otherwise, you're just going to make yourself look like an ignorant fool.

I have a small rock and coin collection, a miniatures collection, a LEGO collection, a small book collection, a large DVD collection, and a Harry Potter collection, across three rooms. I have been collecting for years, mostly cheaply. Now I'm starting a video games collection.
I have been playing video games since age five. It was my first love (is love not useful, beautiful?). Started with GoldenEye 007 on the N64 -- one of the most profound video games of all time. And I have been collecting in some form or another my entire life, from toys to pencils to cards to VHS.
However, this *is* my life. Beyond what I just stated. I have nothing. I have one simple, cheap laptop with very little on it. I don't own many clothes. I don't sing or play music or dance or do sports. I don't have a car or a phone. I don't drink, take drugs, smoke, eat meat, have many friends, have jewellery, or otherwise. I live a simple life.
I just have my few, mostly small and cheap, collections/hobbies. I am, in fact, somewhat of a minimalist. And I believe minimalism relates to video game collecting quite well, in fact. And I rather discovered I am a minimalist in my way of thinking and taste, even food. I am very simplistic when it comes to food.
If you take out of my DVDs, books, LEGO, video games, Harry Potter items, miniatures, and the other collections, I have almost nothing whatsoever in my house and life.
What you would be left with is a single mattress, a laptop, and some clothes. That's all I own, not related to my collections/hobbies...
... Make no mistake, collections and hobbies are useful, beautiful things. In the words of some, they keep us from war, they keep us from being Romans once again. Hobbies, work, entertainment, the arts, and so on keep us sane and moral in this strange world. Without such pleasures and fulfillment, there would only be bloodshed and darkness.
The great H. G. Wells suggested in his book -- just two years before the war -- that tabletop wargaming (little wars) ought to take the place of real warfare. Such a wonderful world it would be if world leaders played with toy soldiers rather than nuclear warheads.
And as wonderful as tabletop wargaming may be... is video gaming not greater? Are video games not the closest one can come to new realms and imagined worlds? Are video games not the only way one can truly live as an Arabic Prince, English King, vampire, or futuristic warrior, all from the safety and comfort of one's armchair?
Can things not be learnt, gained, and improved from video games? Memory, tactics, strategy, coordination, muscle memory, creativity, friendship, hearing, freedom -- true freedom. From the world, the confines of one's own skull, one's own time period or anatomy; from one's own galaxy or universe. Is that not freedom? Is that not beauty? Useful? A life worth living?

It bothers me so much when people say "how much money do you have" and "I don't get why someone is collecting and not just play emulators". Is it so hard to imagine a grownup having a day job, earning his living and spending some money over time on his hobby? Is it so hard to understand that not everyone's the same and some people like different things than you do, like for instance, collecting? I don't collect myself, but it brings me joy to see someone having a nice hobby and loving every part of it. I don't see what's so hard to understand here.

Simply put too, it takes time to earn them. Nothing comes easy without working hard for it. Everything you see with collectors take time and isn't all given at once. All is not free without without pain and effort.

Ok that general and positive message aside, here's a giant rant that needs to be said. People on this comments thread are so rude/presumptuous/judgmental/generally awful! I guess I can understand why collecting is a hobby that could be misunderstood if you don't do it yourself, but why the hate? How is it anyone's business how Pete or any other collector spends their money? First of all - he's probably amassed this collection over the course of his general life time. There's probably a good 20+ years of collecting games and merch displayed in this one room, it's not like he's a millionaire and got the money to blow it all on this stuff out of nowhere. But secondly, I don't see how anyone can determine what is worth spending money on for somebody else - It's obvious that this is his hobby and passion. What some people spend on clothing or shoes or food, he probably spends on video games. Why does what YOU happen to deem more worthy of spending money on have to apply to every other person? It's not only condescending, it's just ridiculous. You're putting your own standards of what deems a happy healthy life and projecting it onto a total stranger. I also think all the personal attacks are just really harsh and hateful. He doesn't talk about his personal life on his videos - does that automatically make him a virgin or a loser? I mean - not that any of that is your business to begin with, but even if he was single, why does that have to determine his worth as a person? Which, btw, being a collector, video game enthusiast, or a "nerd" doesn't automatically label you as a loser who "can't get pussy." That's a bunch of bullshit - if you are passionate about something and pursue it for your hobby or professionally, it's usually a plus. Note for desperate guys: A girl who can't accept your hobbies or interests is not the right girl for you to begin with. That's a whole other rant though. I just can't understand what your assumptions about his relationship status or living situation should have to do with this video - you don't know his life! You're just looking at this collection and automatically judging and assuming that he doesn't have anything else going on, and really - if that's the amount of evidence you need in order to judge someone's worth, all of YOU are truly the pathetic ones. It just riles me up so much to see all the crap that people put onto someone who has spent their time, energy, and money into doing something that they really genuinely love doing. Just because it's maybe not as socially "cool" or "mainstream." Unless he's in debt and spending his money poorly and needlessly, or irresponsibly (which I highly doubt considering all his other videos on how to be a smart spending/collector) none of you should have anything to fucking say about what he does in his free time or with his own money that he's earned for himself. End of story. Also, the amount of time and effort that goes into giving back by making RUclips videos is super commendable. It's about contributing back into a community, and it's admirable, not something to be looked down on. When you critical assholes have something worthy to give back to a larger community of people, then maybe you can think twice about starting to spread your unwanted negativity.

Game collecting is expensive. I am a former collector and trust me, unless you get lucky with finds, the costs are stupid. I collected for 4 years before I quit and besides the obvious reason of not enjoying it anymore, the cost was too much. I mean, I want to travel, get a nicer car and just in general have a large savings bank account. It was thousands a year on games to just sit on a shelf. It wasn't worth it and I'll be honest, when I think about all the money I threw away on my stupid game collection, I want to cry. I went from buying games I really wanted every now and then to buying on average 3 games a week just to have them. I'll be honest, if you want to legally play retro games, just use something like Steam or the Virtual Console. Much cheaper and it doesn't take up an entire room.
I love video games but a near death in my family pretty much made me think about how sudden life can potentially end and I'd rather travel the world, have a lot of cash and a family than thousands of old, mostly bad quality video games I don't care about. Also, I think I collected because I was depressed and I would feel happy and felt like I was doing something building this collection. Sure, it looked cool when I got my room in order but at the end of the day, I was lonely, sad and I needed more in life than Intellivision or SNES games.

I agree. Pete can do what makes him happy. I just wanted to share my view with game collecting. It was fun for probably two or three years but within the last year I just didn't care much for it anymore. I did get excited again a few months ago and decided to go for a complete Sega Genesis collection but in the end I was buying a lot of bad games and the money adds up and in the end it was just for plastic to sit on a shelf.

I do all of those things while collecting. Sounds to me like the problem was either 1.) You were trying to collect WAY too much in too short of an amount of time (Pete's been accumulating his collection his whole life, not just four years) or 2.) You need a better job.

3 and a half years ago I watch a room video and all I had was a X Box360. I now have 6 consoles and 3 handhelds. Thank you Pete for the inspiration to get back into older games. Great room tour also.

I'm catching up on some old Pete Dorr videos and was so happy to see you have a copy of Orb-3D. Most people hate that game, but I love it! I setup the SRC leaderboard (with a very tasteful custom site logo), created the TAS, and now I'm currently working on speed running guides for what seems like nobody 🙃

Great video Pete. My friend just gave me his boxed Chrono Trigger, Secret of Mana, Evermore, FF2 and FF3 and a bunch of N64 Games. This has made me want to collect again.

Mean this with all due respect. But I’m not impressed. I mean, I’m great in terms of quantity, but qualitatively it’s very messy, unorganized, and claustrophobic. He has some organizational scheme, granted, but mostly it’s just cluttered, probably not dusted, and..... idk I’m more impressed with game rooms that take the time to make it look presentable, organized, clean, comfortable. I feel like I’d have a panic attack being in there more than 5 minutes.
Why does everyone think that owning a room likes this make him rich? Pete didn't put this together overnight, he has been building the gameroom for years piece by piece since he started gaming.

Hey dude, i really enjoy your videos, but quick tip, if you're going to pan around your room and move the camera alot, PLEASE turn up your shutter speed on your camera if your camera is capable of this, if it's not, fair enough.
But it will make everything clearer when you make sudden movements or the camera shakes a bit, rather than seem like we are all experiencing vertigo.

Thanks Pete for posting these tours! The only thing I'd fix for the next tour is to pan through the various titles more slowly. You speed by them too quickly so it's just a blur. I can't make out the titles and it gets me nauseous.

All collectors have huge collections but no good way of storage, in my collection, that will be the first thing i will invest in. Good shelves, Box covers, display cases, dust filters, UV protected windows ;)

+Girl Versus Game Its a long video and I think we should get an achievement or trophy for making it through the whole thing. But, one thing he is lacking is the Commodore 64 - so many great games for that system and had ones such as Jumpman, Lode Runner, Excite Bike, Paperboy, Donkey Kong, Avoid The Noid, Ghostbusters, etc etc etc - the exact number is hard to find, but there were around 10,000 - 20,000 games made that played on the Commodore 64. Now, all you need is a great emulator for it and just download ALL the roms
