I want to walk off so badly. I am getting my master's degree, so moving forward and giving myself a way out, but it's a long path, and my health is suffering.
Management consulting is a good way to gain experience when you are young but I can’t see it being a long term role. My former company hired McKinsey as a consulting company and those people were super smart and always on their toes...and they didn’t look happy. It didn’t save my former company but still...very intense.
Totally agree! I learned a lot. It’s definitely much easier when you are younger too like you mentioned but overall there’s just so much pressure and you really have to make trade offs in your life and identify what’s most important to you. McKinsey hours I hear are 🤯

Hello, thank you for your incredibly insightful & personally relatable video. The "complaining" & "I stop waking up happy" & "start Googling the answers to self-validate" & "listen to your heart" are totally relatable. I am an Asian myself, and I know the struggle of a young millennial trying to navigate the world of hustle culture & toxic productivity. You're too burnout to work but too guilty to not work. Listen, your body knows best, there are plenty of jobs/partners/dates/etc. "Listen to your heart" By the way, I am so glad you look incredibly happy in 2020, so you make the right decision back in 2018. Cheers to a live well lived!!!!
Thank you so much! I am much more fulfilled now than before. I hope more people are able to experience this as well. Yes as an Asian there is another layer of cultural expectation to "BE" something in society. But what if we just BE who we are inherently at our core and experience more fullness in our lives 🙂
I was in a contract job earlier this year that I had to leave because I had a literal panic attack. I was so stressed out there, it's beyond true that your body will manifest from the inside out something physical for you to pay attention to when you're struggling with the stress and pressure of a situation/environment. Loved this video, and thank you for sharing your story and being so transparent!
I was very indecisive between consulting and project management careers. there are so many videos about "why I quick consulting " that's scary. Well, I guess project management is the right career path for me. Thank you for the video.
You're welcome! Project management can also be a very intense career path as well. The most important thing is to go toward a career that piques your curiosity, where you think you can learn, and what is in line with your overall interests and values. And also remember just because you choose one path, doesn't mean you have to stick with it forever! Best of luck!
Great video. Love how open and honest you are about your experiences. Huge respect! The thing that alot of people don't necessarily appreciate is that with this high powered or highly specialist roles, is that they are very very demanding on your time and energy. Not for everyone!
Yes it's definitely not for everyone! And I think no matter what role you are in, in any industry or career, it's always important to look at your core values and life intentions. What is it exactly you want to achieve and is it actually in alignment with who you are? That's the key to feeling fulfilled I think and if you're fulfilled then the energy you give to it will fuel you not drain you! 🙂
When my job let me go I was much happier and my stomach problems want away. And I can sleep better. I want to start a business later on but for now we have to get through this covid thing.
I am so excited for your future path! And thrilled that you are happier and feeling physically better! Life is so interesting sometimes where some things may seem like they're a bad thing but then it ends up being a great thing! I'd love to hear more about your business, that sounds exciting!
I experienced all of these situations in my first 3 years at Deloitte Consulting. had to fucking run and escape for my life. 1. set up to fail then blamed for failing 2. colleagues that have your back for half a year just to throw u under the bus during end of year reviews 3. escalation threats, shouting managers 4. asked for help during a project but manager asked me to search answers on wikipage on google. 5. no work life boundaries. working overtime is expected and default culture 6. shifting goal posts every year, got great client feedback and excellent performance reviews but never got promoted. (excluding the year where review got sabotaged by peers) 7. 0 salary raise company wide when covid broke out 8. heavily under-resourced projects with unrealistic timelines 9. half the team left in a year.
Consulting is about providing the client with a product, not necessarily providing them with truth. Consulting can be hell on your ethical center. And if you're too ethical, you'll be fired.
Thanks for the video and do take care of yourself. I am also facing somewhat similar dilemma now. Not that extreme though but lack of adequate sleep and stress
Thank you! Lack of sleep and high stress is very important to be mindful of! Really consider the "how" - how can you get more sleep, how can you manage stress, how can you manage workload, etc. Open communication is also very important so that you can set the appropriate boundaries!
Thank you so much! I'll be making another video on consulting, probably around exit strategies! If you have any questions about consulting or anything else let me know 🙂
I can very much relate to your passion which is mindfulness and wellbeing. But i'm just starting my career in Deloitte and afraid that the same would happen to me. Sort of in a confused state because whatever knowledge you gained through that experience, I feel I already gained that even before getting into consulting or a software job altogether.
Hi Nikhil! Thank you for taking the time out to leave a comment. What led you to watching this video? It sounds like you have some answers in your head already about what your next steps should be. :) And also what about this topic is there for you to uncover and look at more?
Hey Rachael, I am only 4 months into my tenure at a major Consultancy and am already feeling a lot of the emotions that you mentioned in the video, including lack of happiness and fulfillment and not being excited about the corporate ladder so to speak. Also, I was able to manage my interests (like hitting the gym regularly) in my earlier jobs, but since joining the new job, I just cant seem to find the energy/will/time. Is this just new hire blues, or is this a sign that consulting isn't for me?
Thanks so much for sharing! There isn't enough information for me to know in this comment but I do see that you're asking because fulfillment is something that is important to you! Not everyone takes a moment to look closer at that, so I want to acknowledge you for that :) I would love to learn more about your thoughts on the path you are on right now. I do coaching for corporate professionals like yourself to really help guide you through the process of identifying what it is that is truly important to you so that you can live in more alignment with your values and your purpose. I totally hear you when you say you can't find the time or energy to manage your interests. I have definitely been there. I would LOVE to connect with you more on this, if you would like! I can see you are definitely asking all the right questions right now. You can connect with me here: www.thedimplelife.com/meet-rachel#coaching
I also left because as a SWE I wasn’t being challenged very much or diving into specific technologies. Upper management couldn’t even code themselves which was kind of cringe. No proper code reviews, etc. Joined FAANG after 2 years of “consulting” and will never go back. It’s prob fun for boomers.
Haha consulting can be fun for anyone who has a passion for it. How do you enjoy your new career with a FAANG company?

Thank you for sharing your thoughts and personal experience. Being honest to myself, I'm also struggling with the same doubts... Just to know... after this time, when you look back, do you think it was the right decision?
Of course! I know it’s such a difficult decision at the time but even now when I look back I still know it was the right decision for me. My values weren’t aligned and my interests were elsewhere. I’m so much more fulfilled outside of the consulting world! I’m happy to chat more about it with you any time :) I’m over at Instagram mostly @justdimpleit!
How long would you recommend sticking around in MBB? I would like to learn as much as possible and have multiple exit opps when moving on from consulting.
That is such an individual question and only you will know when the right amount of time is for you. Are you still learning? Are you on interesting projects that further your skillsets? Do you feel energized when you go to work? Does some part of your work feel exciting to you? Does the work align with your values? Those are just some of the questions you could consider asking yourself and reflecting on. I'm sorry it's not a straightforward answer but I do hope that helps give you a little bit more clarity!
Hey, I have started looking for the answers hahaha.. bumped into this. You have helped my verbalize things that I am feeling as a 2 yo consultant! Is there anyway i can get in touch for further guidance on this topic?

They do pay well but it really all just depends on what you value at this current moment in life. It's ok if it is money but are there other things you may not be able to pursue with the high demands that consulting can bring. Questions to reflect on :)
I'm still a student and I've been looking tons of video about this career lately. Could you please give me an advice on what skill should I be ready for or what I need to get into the.l job and mindset to keep doing it. I'm really passionate about business so i really think I can do this but I also have a fcked up mental health like it is the worst of the worst. I'm asking for this so I can compare my self and to know if I can fix my self to be ready
Thank you so much for sharing your thoughts! First off, health, whether it is physical or mental, is first and foremost. Without either of those it becomes difficult to show up as your most authentic self in other areas of your life. Also, there is nothing for you to "fix" :) You are whole as you are. If you do want to get into consulting, I would ask why you feel passionately about that career choice. My skill sets were broad and specific at the same time. I had a whole career before getting into consulting that was within digital but in various aspects. I was a product manager, project manager, SEO specialist where I had exposure and direct experience in email marketing, affiliate marketing, SEO, omnichannel strategy, etc. That helped set me up into a career in consulting because I had an understanding of marketing in general and could speak to specific areas within it that could provide value to my clients.
