had my first ouzo when I was in the Navy. Did a Med cruise and Athens Greece was a port of call. all I remember is standing at Captain's Mast getting busted from E4 to E3. I still love the stuff and the best way to drink it is out of the freezer.
You’ve had your share of life experiences haven’t you! I’ve been to Greece a couple of times, and ouzo has always played a part when I’ve been there 🥴 😁 😎
Pernod is my all time favourite anise flavoured tipple. Really, Really nice on ice with 7up on a hot summer's day. Still Spirits sells an anise flavouring additive which I've tried in white spirit - and then Olive Nation has one too, that I found to be even nicer. Still falls short of being s nice as real pernod. Thanks for reminding me of balck-jacks. When I was a nipper, I'd buy 12 of them for a thruppeny bit!!!! Ah .... nostalgia!!!!
It is one of those very distinctive flavours, and I love the Anisette that we have. Using some Black Jacks was all the more enjoyable in a fun way. And also a throwback to the good ol’ days for sure 😎 Glad to hear you enjoyed the vid 😊
I made an infusion using star anis and fennel seeds and a bit of sugar in 40% neutral. Blooming good and didn’t taste artificial like the flavour essences sometimes do. You could add 1 clove and a couple of cardamom pods and coriander seeds for a little lemon background.
I know what you mean about the Essence ‘tang’, some work, some don’t. I like the combination of ingredients in your infusion though 👍👍 And I can say I won’t be tinkering with the this drink, the taste is just as it should be of that chewy sweet tastiness. But thanks for your comment 🙂
Hey there. It’s a shame you don’t have these chewy sweets over there, but I’m sure you’ve got more, and a lot better, drinks at hand not to worry about missing out on this one. Keep Shining Randy! 😎
Randy, Barretts make black jacks and fruit salads. They are both delicious. I’m sure they’ll be some way online for you to buy them. You are missing out big time, and by the way loving your videos and I actiually bought a bunch of banana after your latest video, I didn’t make the rum but had a banana butty (sandwich)instead. Keep up the great work 😀
I use an aniseed flavour when I make vape liquid, it’s a very strong and pure taste, it’s from a Welsh company called decadent vapours. I never thought to try it in my drinks 🤦 I’ve only been using it for about 9 years 😂 Thanks for the vid man
I'm old enough to remember the days when you could buy 4 blackjacks for a penny, them & fruit salads, I'd go to my local sweet shop with 50p & come back with 200 of those little chewy slices of bliss. :) Thanks for the memories. :)
That’s a shame, you’re missing out on a beauty of a chewy sweet (and the drink!). There’s a few comments on using Star Anise in vodka. So that’s a good place to start if you fancy it.
oh wow I forgot black jacks even exsisted. They arent sold here in australia. Im going to get my mum to send me some in the mail . good to see New videos !!
Hey actually I wonder if they taste the same as Choo-Choo bars, they have an aniseed liquorice flavour and are a chewy sort of thing. I actually soaked a few pieces in a small amount of spirit and it tasted like black sambuca.
@@highly-spirited I must make some more using the bars I mentioned, but there is an Australian site selling the lollies you used as well. Do you call them a lolly or lollies over there in the UK.
Adding Star Anise to a vodka has been one of my best, to me--not the Mrs., products to date. She took to hiding the pods because I kept taking them from the pantry.
@@johnh7718 call yourself a dabbler, I laugh in your face with that comment! I’m the only one round here that deserves that title 🤪 Thanks for the info. Stay tuned as I might be back with a black Jack vs anise taste off 😎

No worries buddy. Nice to hear one person might have got something useful out of it this video 😎
thanks for the idea i will defiantly try it with perhaps a "fisherman's friend" on the side😄
Good for it! I like it as it is, without anything else in the mix. But the choice is yours 🙂
That is a great Idea, I love licorice, don,t think we have those candies in Canada but will have to look for something similar
Lee - I grew up in Scotland and now live in Vancouver. You might find these if you have a local British candy store where you live.
Thank you fine sir, we do have a candy store that does import candy from the UK, I will go check it out
If you like the idea of it then please give it a shot. That’s if you can find some Black Jacks that is 🥴

Ah yes, the fruity Fruit Salads 😋 Loved them as well. Probably more than these Black Jacks tbh. Nice to hear you enjoyed the video 😊
So do I !
Black Jack? new to me! yet I'm inspired enough to find a licorice substitute to experiment with!

Great idea. What I use to do was eat one black jack sweet and then one fruit salad sweet. Devine. Try it.
Check you out with your mouth full of chewy sweet combo move! But I like it 😎
Would never of thought of that! Great idea, I’ll be giving that a go , might swap the sweets , live on the edge
I did a rhubarb and custard boiled sweet infusion a while back, and that also worked exceptionally well. Get those creative juices flowing 😎

A bit of a blast from the past aren’t they. I’m not making many videos now, but I’ve been meaning to do this for ages, and I’m happy I did!

Lollipops or lolly for short here in the uk.

We should start a poll. Fruit salads or Blackjacks. I can never choose though.
I’ve always favoured Fruit Salad, but funnily enough, as I’ve matured (joke, I mean just got older), I now love the BJs. And no pun intended 🥴

So how much would you add to 1 litre of Vodka then? I guess it’s got to be good enough to be balanced.
@@highly-spirited I think it gets the job done at 6 per 750ml. However, there is some tinkering about.
