I watch a lot of Matt's videos -- he's made it up sand chute many times in one go. The day it took all day the sand was super hot and super dry and very deep powder sugar sand. This video had cool and rain on the day there. Matt could do it in two wheel drive under those conditions. Not that your truck isn't cool, but it's apples to oranges. edit: I'm only saying this so people who don't know who Matt know that was not typical for him. #mattsoffroadrecovery
@@sterlingswildwest sorry, didn't mean to dis you! Just sticking up for Matt for the other commenters who don't know him. :) I do not do offroad; I just enjoy watching the talent and the vehicles that are able to do such amazing things. If I was a betting man I'd bet a ton of money Matt couldn't get any of his vehicles up this in two wheel drive except the Bombi, but is that really 2wd? haha I'd even let him try after a big rainstorm.
I also seem to remember that the wrecker was pretty new at that point and they were having trouble with the center diff lock, or even any of their lockers. It was just the worst case scenario for them. They got it out though.
To be fair, Matt's wrecker was there in much dryer sand, overheating, failings alternator, unable to air down all tires, disabled lockers and it weights 11 to 12 thousand pounds.
And built it himself to boot 😂. Considering how they basically built and designed it on the fly, it's very impressive that it can do the things it can, especially compared to vehicles engineered and designed by multi-billion dollar companies. It's really a marvel in itself! I've built one vehicle in a similar fashion, and it's SOOO much more than you even plan for once you have all these pieces and parts laying on the floor in front of you lol
Actually, if you watch Matt's video the wrecker was digging up wet sand, can even see the wet sand on the Banana at 10:51 or so in this video. I like Matt but the Patagonia tires he worships are way too stiff for a vehicle like the Banana and Morrvaire. Both of which are all really heavy (the Banana is over 6000 lbs), and he doesnt air down enough (one weakness of his tires since they are so stiff he is afraid to go below 8psi). All things that ruin performance in the sand. My old 67 CJ5 with a V6 in it, 33's at 2psi that weighs in at 2000 lbs would absolutely destroy this hill, might even be able to do it in 2WD.
Why can't some of you just enjoy the video? The Raptor is a beast, and its only as good as the driver. Just give them their props for making it up the hill. Everyone seems to be getting so upset over nothing. They didn't say not 1 negative thing about Matt or anyone for that matter. Just like, subscribe, share, and be happy . I just want to say - I appreciate how you stay polite when responding to some of the comments that attempt to criticize. On video the sand did look a little wetter than on Matt's video. But that Raptor R is a beast. Enjoyed the video.
Man I appreciate the comment and compliment. We have never been off-roading in Hurricane and are huge fans of MORR. Salt of the earth people every last one of them. We weren’t trying to make this any sort of competition, we literally just wanted to try it. The camera we had mounted down low shows the dry powdery sand. I am absolutely dumbfounded how so many people were so genuinely angry about this video. Still don’t understand it. We said nothing disparaging about Matt or his team or his rigs. I totally understand my vehicle is so different from his and so were the conditions from when he did it. His rigs could out do ours on any other surface hands down and we said as much in the vid. It was super fun for sure. We recently spent 2 days filming in the huge dunes in Idaho so future vids will show this thing climbing sand dunes much larger than this. It IS a beast! Thanks again!
So nice to finally see someone air down enough in a YT video. Those tires were squatting the right amount for sand. I hope Matt sees this and realizes he hasnt aired down enough in any of the videos I've seen, and I've seen all of them for a few years now. Those Patagonia tires Matt worships are way stiffer then the BFG's on this Raptor and need even less air. I ran 2psi in the 33's on my old 67 CJ5, which topped the scales at a mere 2000 lbs and I've been up worse sand hills than this with little effort, or in 2WD when the sand isn't super dry.
Love the CJ5 - yours's sounds great. I had a J-10 pickup on 33's back in the day (80-88) and loved it. Always got stuck in deeper than the Fords/Chevy's/Doidge's. All things said - I love my 35" Patagonia M/T (Gen 1) tires on my 2012 JKU. I air them down to 4-5 psi in the sand and snow, and have never had any problems. Never had one slip my factory rims, and they flex like crazy. Great tire for the terrain out west...
It's been a while, but I believe that Matts New Vehicle wasn't quite done, didn't have some gearing or locking it would have later, and also it had new tires, which suck in the sand because they like to dig more than go. The other guys Bronco went right up which surprised the hell out of me but also made sense. Relatively light compared to the tow rig, and capable of holding momentum over sand. One of the biggest issues, was that they sent up the vehicle that would destroy that road FIRST, so all the vehicles that went later had to basically breach these giant freshly turned holes, which even filled were sand traps. It was a perfect storm of difficulty and sketch decision making. I believe the Tow Rig would probably do better today with it's current configuration, but it's biggest deficit there is weight. It has plenty of power, but even with large tires (hopefully much balder now), its just a heavy beast to float on a grade. The Raptor did well. Kudo's for the unbridled courage to try it in the evening.
The biggest difference is Matt drove up the chute while the bronco and raptor use electronica computer controls. The truck picks the throttle and gears. All the driver really has to do is pick the line.
Matt didn’t have functioning lockers as the time, which caused a big traction issue. And each vehicle dug deeper and deeper ruts making it harder for the next person going up.
The sand conditions were considerably different, lockers not working, couldn't air down where he needed it, the wrecker is stupid heavy, and he destroyed the trail by over powering when he lost traction. Jefe made it up with an almost factory Bronco. Weight difference and differential gearing. The trails in that area are a blast.
The banana made it up pretty easy, so it definitely had something to do with the power to weight ratio, the wrecker couldn’t lock the hubs because they didn’t have the air lockers all the way hooked up and the sand conditions was definitely different by the looks of it. I’ve never been there but I would say the raptor would be able to make it up easier then the heavy wrecker with less horsepower and a unlocked dif
Great video and awesome challenge you guys undertook. In sand, HP is the king and the Raptor has plenty of it. And I'm sure driver skill also had something to do with it...

So many excuses as to why they didn't make it. So far all I can say is that you guys did great !! And by the way it seems the two most stock vehicles were the most successful. You two did fantastic for being there for the first time and so did both of the FORDS.
Glad you made it. but the sand is wet and made it a lot easier for your truck. The color of the sand shows how wet it is under dark skies. The sand when hot and dry robs tons of power from vehicles. I'm an avid sand dunner and grew up with hill shooting sand dune trails and tall sand dunes. Others may not know their vehicles and should not try this like you have. The best tires besides paddle tires are low pressure balding or bald tires to maintain full float. You don't want an aggressive mud tire that will dig down. I also drive a 2006 Dodge 4x4 with lots of power, while doing a muddy hill climb, while following a fellow friend, my truck shut itself off cause I was hitting a limiter that I didn't know it had. I thought that I had blown it up while having fun. I know that it would shut my truck off trying to climb this hill. I also own modded raptor and a sand rail, those run paddles since their light
Awesome vid, and looked like a fun time. I'm the type of person that would want to try that in my basically stock Silverado on 35's, even if I knew it was a 'bad' idea! A lot of Matt's troubles when he was there were self inflicted, lockers not working, not aired down enough, not to mention how heavy that wrecker is. And not to take anything away from that beast of a Raptor, but the conditions looked worse to me on Matt's video. The sand that day was a lot deeper. I don't remember seeing so many rocks in the trail. But either way, great job guys and thanks for sharing your adventure on the chute!
@@sterlingswildwestyeah they seem like fun people to hang with. I need you'd really hit it off. Just a bunch of good ol' boys ... and girl. lol. She's the coolest!
Woah!! Kevin Bacon off roading. Good times 😅 The sand is way different when its super dry and has very little cohesion. Give it a try under those conditions. Great video. Its always nice to see the desert west!
Paul from Fab Rat's tow truck did really well on that hill until the water pump seal let go after getting to the top. Your truck is definitely set up for that type of terrain with the power to weight ratio working in your favor.
Right? Testing them on the road wouldn’t help at all. This guy was beating it to a pulp, found a weakness and is fixing it before going to production. He was a good dude!
Some years back we did some testing of airing down on Jeeps and mini trucks. We found that when we went below 10 psi the contact patch got worse, it maxed at around 10. What happens is that the center part of the tire folds upwards when you get too low. The ideal case is when the pattern is flat. Try it in flat soft sand and see for yourself. Will vary with vehicle weight etc.
Plenty of factors to compare, like sand temperature / wetness level + vehicle weight etc. But honestly the biggest flex for Matt is that he went up there with a cool truck that he built himself from scratch. Doing the same in what appears to be a stock Raptor R just doesn’t hit the same satisfaction. (Disclaimer, I don’t know this channel, so I assumed these guys have not done mods on their raptor)
Stopping video at 1:10 and saying you will not make it the first time without stopping, no way. Now I'll watch and see. Ok I was right, but you did it rather easily on the 2nd and 3rd. Sand definitely takes some HP and speed to stay on top of the sand blast over it and you've got the right wheels for that! Big sand hill in Michigan killed my stock Yamaha TT500 back in late '70's, so over winter had engine stroked and cammed and blew that same hill away with ease!
Matt cars are under powered, with ancient and slow transmissions. Hefe's Bronco made it up no problem, just like you guys. 10 speed dual clutch does make a huge difference.
They took 2 days get Matt's wrecker out because the lockers didn't work and one tire they couldn't are down. His other 3 vehicles bronco, jeep and morvare went right up it. Now the sports car didn't. They had to drag it out. But I liked your video. Thanks
@sterlingswildwest yeah. I'd say alot of people have been there since matts video and have migrated alot of the sand futher to the bottom and to the sides of the bank. Your truck barely dropped or dug in at all. Not stripping any credit but I'd like to see matt do it again now under same conditions.

@@johnt.848 ok I understand, you have a crush on Matt. But giving credit to the man who inspired this video is courteous and fair, and do think Matt hasn't said someone's name in one of his videos.
Their bronco did it in one shot just like this raptor. The power really helps. But yes built for completely different things. Especially matts wrecker was the culprit of the 2 day rescue.
@@sterlingswildwest perhaps y'all could do a video together sometime? That would be really fun to watch. Thanks for the video, it's good to see FORD power making a small comeback
I you watched the episode you would of seen that the Bronco made it the first try.. the problem was the big heavy wrecker tearing up the road.. and that weak porsche suv
Sand conditions are much different then when Matt was there. How much moisture that is in the sand makes it an all different animal. You did a great job anyway though.
You can tell in your vid that the sand conditions were not the same,in Matt's the sand was like flour. Was your attempt the same time of year and same conditions.Remember , to hat terrain changes daily. But great job.
First of all when Sand is damp it's much easier. And all matt's vehicles made it first try besides the heavy wrecker. If I remember correctly the air lockers wasn't working. But the raptor was very impressive.
If I was forced to own a newer four wheel truck a Raptor is what I would get, but nothing beats my 1985 Chevy square body truck with Dana-60 front, Corp-14 bolt rear, and Detroit lockers.
Jefe's Bronco made it all the way out, all the others had to be pulled out, the sand was dry and powdery. Did I hear you say it was raining? I think it you would have been down there with Matt and them on that day you would have been pulled out. Also the wrecker had problems with the lockers and had to come back the next day and fix it.
Raptor is kinda made more for those conditions than the 12,000 pound truck. Also the sand looked to be almost compacted here. You didn’t sink in Not defending anyone or Putting anyone down, just trying to look at the reality I haven’t driven that sand, but having spent time on some dunes, conditions make or break a ride Nice work though. Well played

Great video and run up a nasty sand hill. Subscribed!
Thank you so much for the kind comment and the sub! You rock!
Matt’s off-road has made it up in one shot by themselves !
Awesome! 🙌
Yeah those clouds that just brought that rain that pre moistened the sand in your favor.😂
lol wish it would have rained before we did it 😂 It didn’t rain until after we finished!
@@sterlingswildwest Curious what percentage of tire wear do you have and what kind of tires are you running
Sick🔥
Thanks man!
Good job guys !! keep up !
Thank you!
It's nice they stress test the trailers in conditions they will be normally in.
Right? Testing them on the road wouldn’t help at all. This guy was beating it to a pulp, found a weakness and is fixing it before going to production. He was a good dude!
You said your friend you can call is Paul Rodgers,
is that THE Paul Rodgers?
That would be some Bad Company. Cool!
@@tmpsg the SwarfWorks recovery specialist Paul Rogers 😂🙌
Great job well done Iv just bought 4 ko2 last Friday you definitely ticked ✅ my impressive
Thank you for the kind comment! I love the KOs especially for the white letters 😂
@@sterlingswildwest lol 😂 many thanks but no white letters for me 👍🏻🥴
Some years back we did some testing of airing down on Jeeps and mini trucks. We found that when we went below 10 psi the contact patch got worse, it maxed at around 10. What happens is that the center part of the tire folds upwards when you get too low. The ideal case is when the pattern is flat. Try it in flat soft sand and see for yourself. Will vary with vehicle weight etc.
Good call! Thanks for the tip!
Thanks for the feedback!
That’s awesome! And yeah there are a few sand secrets for sure! Thanks for the comment!
Matt cars are under powered, with ancient and slow transmissions. Hefe's Bronco made it up no problem, just like you guys. 10 speed dual clutch does make a huge difference.
Right? The 10R80s rock! His underpowered rigs are unrivaled off road!
Remember, Matt didn't have lockers working, and his truck was untried. In it's current configuration, it can go right up that hill.
@@LYLEALLRED awesome!
Matt and Rory will be shocked 😳😂😂👍🏻
😂😂
Those Ford raptors are one badass truck
Agreed 🙌
That Raptor R sounds so awesome. Great video ! Keep up the great content.
Thank you so much! Yes the R is music to the ears 😂
Great work guys. Big balls to go down at 7, but great video. Wish I could do that…
Dude thank you so much!
Me watching the beginning of the video without headphones…
Lady across from me: 😳
😂
great video!
Thanks so much for the positivity! We really appreciate it!
This was fun to watch! Now do it while dragging a Porsche out 😂
lol, right?
Raptors make everything look easy...and looks good doing it :)
Right? Thanks so much for the positive comment! 🙌
Condition of sand makes a difference, but in sand, power is really what you need. It's one of the few things that power over comes traction.
Right? And the R has plenty of ponies! Thanks for the nice comment!
They took 2 days get Matt's wrecker out because the lockers didn't work and one tire they couldn't are down. His other 3 vehicles bronco, jeep and morvare went right up it. Now the sports car didn't. They had to drag it out. But I liked your video. Thanks
Thanks for sharing, was that the Porsche that had hardest time?
I love seeing that grocery getter be put to work! 😁
Right? 🙌😂
As Matt often says, sand conditions change every day. 😉
@@helixhippie so true!
That’s one bad truck!
Thanks man I love it!
You did it in one of the most expensive trucks on the market....Oh good for you, that was all vehicle nice Ford commercial 👍
Thank you! 🙌
Way less sand than matts video. Mad how areas can change so much in just months.
Right?
@sterlingswildwest yeah. I'd say alot of people have been there since matts video and have migrated alot of the sand futher to the bottom and to the sides of the bank. Your truck barely dropped or dug in at all. Not stripping any credit but I'd like to see matt do it again now under same conditions.
I think people are missing the point, they showed that it is possible with what they have and didn't throw shade at anyone.
Exactly! Holy crap man, thank you! And thanks for actually watching the vid before commenting! It’s funny to see how many people are so dang angry for what reason I know not 😂
People already know it is possible, since in the sam MORR video a Bronco did it and Matt didit many a time before in the OR wrecker....
@@muppetpaster I feel like such a dip shit I didn't notice that these guys were driving a bronco.
I think you missed the point, they name dropped Matt to get more views and ride his coat tails.
Exactly! Thanks for the comment!
When in doubt, power out.... and to do that you've gotta have a FORD!! Will be cool to see if Matt takes the 45 sec challenge.
Ha right? Love a good Coyote power plant. Thanks for the positive comment!
@@sterlingswildwest perhaps y'all could do a video together sometime? That would be really fun to watch. Thanks for the video, it's good to see FORD power making a small comeback
Impressive.
Appreciate the love!
Awesome job guys. Tbe raptors huge power just makes easy work of that hill.
Thanks man! Appreciate it!
Well done. Like said in below comments, the sand is different every day. But still well done!
Exactly! Thank you!
Nigel thornberry 😂 90s kid for sure
Know him?
Nicely done.
that was smooth and for that i subbed!
Thank you so much! We appreciate you!
I you watched the episode you would of seen that the Bronco made it the first try.. the problem was the big heavy wrecker tearing up the road.. and that weak porsche suv
Right? Jefe did it!
@@sterlingswildwest yea.. the problem started after the wrecker destroyed the road.. but this was fun to watch either way
Heat changes the sand😀good job
It sure does! Thank you!
The 10 speed automatic helps keep the engine in the power band
i knew it would be no issue just like it was no issue for jefes bronco in matts video wheel speed is king
Right? 🙌
It was just a different time. I would take Matt''s Movair or Banana any day of the week. For one 37" tires are always better.
Right? The morvair and banana are both freaking amazing! And you’re right. 37s are awesome. Our raptors both running 37s 🙌
Matt knew it would be a sand trap on a hot day, your evening stroll up and down made the most of then conditions.
Sand conditions are much different then when Matt was there. How much moisture that is in the sand makes it an all different animal. You did a great job anyway though.
Right? We were wishing for some wet sand but alas it was dry.
Your tyres are giving an awesome sand footprint.
Right? It’s a game changer.
You can tell in your vid that the sand conditions were not the same,in Matt's the sand was like flour. Was your attempt the same time of year and same conditions.Remember , to hat terrain changes daily. But great job.
Right? Matt was digging down deep!
Look at 10:51 in this video, the sand on the Banana's tires is wet...
Great video gents!!
Yo! Thanks so much for that!
That was awesome!!
Thanks so much for the positivity!
Sterling is a Stud! Raptor R for the W!!
FORD....OOOOOOYA
When you climbed out of this canyon, was the transfer case in low of high?
High 🙌
Drone shows how steep it is the best. IMO.
Right?
Yeah.. Sand definitely more packed… but still interesting.
Right?
First of all when Sand is damp it's much easier. And all matt's vehicles made it first try besides the heavy wrecker. If I remember correctly the air lockers wasn't working. But the raptor was very impressive.
Would have been awesome if the sand was wet when we did it but you are exactly right! Matt and his rigs are amazing! 🙌
You has good sand conditions. Well done thought.
Apples to oranges..
Yes! You get it! 🙌
Man that looks so much easier than when Matt did it
Different conditions, Matt has made it up in one go at times while towing
These guys must live in the city. OOOooo theres rocks. OH and sharp rocks. City folks.
@@budthomason8890 😂 love the feedback! What city do you think we live in?
@@sterlingswildwest No idea.
You got lucky with the rain, moisture makes the sand way easier to climb. Dry and powdery sucks!
Right? I wish it would have rained before we tried it too! As you can see on camera it was dry as a bone
Raptors are the coolest vehicle out of the box. Love my gen2.
Absolutely the best! How long have you had yours?
@@sterlingswildwest i have had mine since 2021 and have put down some miles both on road and off!! Did some minor upgrades nothing too crazy!
Looks a lot more rocky and less sandy than when Matt went out. I'd be interested to see ya go out with him.
Would love to go out with him. His vehicles are awesome. This is one of the only scenarios where I could even come close to him off-road 🙌
If I was forced to own a newer four wheel truck a Raptor is what I would get, but nothing beats my 1985 Chevy square body truck with Dana-60 front, Corp-14 bolt rear, and Detroit lockers.
@@christophersanders5007 sounds like a beast! How long have you had it?
@@sterlingswildwest About 25-years.
What a country we get to live in. Your sweating in the dessert im freezing my butt off at the ocean.
Haha, which ocean?
@@sterlingswildwest Pacific one. Pescadero CA it was freezing this morning when I was watching. Now it's hot and touristy
Interesting, what vehicle would you take down there?
Damp sand is very different than that powder Matt had. You’re going to have to do it again.
Luckily the sand was dry as a bone when we did it but I’d try it in any conditions!
Nice run!
Gracias!
next drag a porshe up it like matt and company did 😝
Right? A lot of people drag porches 😂
Are they trying to say they are better than Matt ,waken up guys ,you are off my things to watch .
Never said we were better than Matt just was inspired by him and wanted to try something he’s done. Thanks for the feedback!
Those glasses, are a bit, too cool, although You look marvelous!
Raptor is kinda made more for those conditions than the 12,000 pound truck. Also the sand looked to be almost compacted here. You didn’t sink in
Not defending anyone or Putting anyone down, just trying to look at the reality
I haven’t driven that sand, but having spent time on some dunes, conditions make or break a ride
Nice work though. Well played
@@thomasleonard9685 thanks for the well thought out response. You are right! This isn’t an apples to apples comparison at all. We were simply inspired by the video of his doing this and wanted to see if we could do it. It was a year later and the sand conditions were clearly different. The vehicles were clearly different too. It was so fun!
Thank your lucky stars that it was raining and the soil was binded 😂. Otherwise your raptor would have met its moses 😅
Haha right! Luckily the rain held off until we finished. Dry sand is way better!
Looks fun. You should try the steep ridge in the "Holy Smokes This Is Really Steep!" MOORE video.
Heck yeah! Thanks for watching! 🙌
Imagine that engine in the moorvair. It would be insane
@@lespaulguitarman24 it would be unstoppable 🙌
The hairstyle gave the rapturd I mean raptor an extra 10 horsepower. Lol

Yes the conditions were different and did you have lockers?
No lockers. But almost a year apart and yes way different conditions.
Wow, kudos to the Ford. Awesome truck love your videos thank you for the content !
Go do Double Sammy in your Raptor. That would be more impressive.
I’m down to try anything once! Doing Moab next maybe metal masher and poison spider. But top of the world and hells revenge for sure 🙌
