    It's mind boggling how some great people can make chemistry so simple and straightforward. And meanwhile we have these ginormous textbooks and professors that use all kinds of symbols, texts calculations and more symbols from like Area 51 to explain 1st year chemistry. You can tell right away who're the good teachers and who're the bad ones.

    I am in general chemistry with the lecture online and the lab on site. It has been tough because the methods my teacher uses leaves me seeking other sources (such as this one) to effectively learn chemistry. It has been time consuming and difficult with the text book being so wordy and not giving the work outs for the math involved. I have found tutoring and this channel to be the absolute most helpful ways to learn. I am so grateful that these videos are here to watch and replay to learn! Thank you so much!

    Professor Organic Chemistry Tutor, thank you for a basic explanation of Hess Law and How to apply it to Enthalpy Change of reaction by finding the heat of summation of individual reactions in AP/General Chemistry. Although the practice problems are simple to follow and understand, I am still confused about this material. I will review Hess Law from top to bottom in order to understand this material. This is an error free video/lecture on RUclips TV with the Organic Chemistry Tutor.

    if you're more math oriented/have taken precalc, take a close look at this (and balancing equations, and redox, and so much other shit)...it's all linear algebra/matrix algebra/systems of linear equations. If you're good with matrices or want a more rigorous way to go about solving these, you can balance anything like this using matrices, row reduction, and finding the determinant.
    (figured that one out on my final by complete accident when I decided "fuck it". It worked.)

    An interesting thing that I've found with Hess' Law is that we can group each reaction into a Matrix instead of just stacking them on top of each other.
    For example: (17:20)
    [1] 2H2O -> 2H2 + O2, dH = +572 kJ
    [2] CO2 -> C + O2, dH = +394 kJ
    [3] 2C2H2 + 5O2 -> 4CO2 + 2H2O, dH = -2600 kJ
    ---------------------------------------
    [4] C2H2 -> 2C + H2
    Can be rewritten as:
    H2 | +2 0 0 | | +1 |
    C | 0 +1 0 | [path] | +2 |
    C2H2 | 0 0 -2 | | -1 |
    Where each row represents a species not eliminated by rxn [4], each column in the matrix represents rxns [1-3], the final column represents the net coefficients in rxn [4], and the +/- signs each represents which side of the thermochemical equation a species is on (+ indicating it's a product, - indicating it's a reactant). The [path] signifies the factor which transforms a species' coefficient from that of matrix [rxn 1-3] into the net [rxn 4]. This is made easier by eliminating the species which are unnecessary, those being CO2, O2, and H2O. Now, as displayed above, it is simply a matter of taking the sum of the coefficients in each row, taking note of how they transform into the "net" column.
    H2 has a coefficient of 2, and is on the product side of the equation. It's "net" gives a coefficient of 1, also a product, and thus we can determine that the path will be (+1/2) . Doing the same for Carbon and Acetylene will likewise give factors of (+2) and (+1/2) respectively.
    Last but not least, we will multiply the dH values of each rxn by their path factor, add them all together, and get a final answer of -226 kJ.
    Hope that helps!
