HOW TO SEW - SENSORY TOY FOR BABY - WITH RATTLES TOO!

  • Full tutorial to show you how to make a 4 patch quilted top sensory toy with four pockets that hold the rattles. Adding different fabrics, ribbons and crinkle bag your baby will be entertained with all the many sensations.

    Supply list:
    -4 squares fabric cut at 5" (12.8cm)
    -1 10" (25.4cm) square each of cotton batting and your choice of fabric for backing. I used dimple chenille
    -4 rattles
    -1 10" (25.4cm) square of crinkle film, floral cellophane or cereal bag
    -ribbon of your choice in different widths and textures cut at 5" (12.7cm) each
    -thread to match fabric
    -sewing machine
    -sewing scissors
    -sewing pins
    -walking foot
    -stick to assist with turning of fabric
    -Iron and ironing board

    I LOVED your video and appreciate all the hard work you've done!!! I didnt have a chance to read any of the other comments - but I love that you used a cereal bag! I've made a few of these for friends, family, as well as my own kid's - and have used cereal bags each time! They're food grade safe and hold up GREAT in the washer and dryer! I wanted to share that lil tidbit of info, in case it might be helpful to anyone else !!!

    Headed to Joann's for the fabric. I love the rattles and hope I can find them in a craft store. Amazon has a great bargain on them but I could never use 55. Next cereal is getting dumped into a baggie as we speak and revving up sewing machine. Our family will have a new little one arriving in May and you have inspired me. Thank you for this great video. Instructions are very clear and detailed.

    Oh sooo cute ☺️. I got some scraps and this is a great idea ! I remember my kids loving their security stuffed bunnies, they wore down the silky tags till they were gone …😁 . This is a prefect gift for the baby showers I am attending …many friends turning grandparents and I know I will be the one with the unique gifts 🎁! I will be making lots cause they need one in the car, one at grandma, one at the other granny, one in the diaper bag, one in the stroller, one in TV room ….can’t have too many . Hehehe …So thank you very much for the video !

    This is a fantastic tutorial. Thank you very much. 💐. When you press it, do you have to use a dry iron and not too hot if there is plastic inside or do the other fabrics prevent it from melting?

      I only pressed on the top side which has the quilt batting to protect the plastic when ironing. Just a quick iron before top stitching.

      Yes, you can get by without a walking foot. It just helps to prevent puckering when you are sewing a few layers together.

      Yes I have washed and all good. For the dryer just air no heat or just dry on a rack.

    I think that fabric you are calling chenille is actually called ‘minky’. In this case I think ‘bubble minky’ is correct.

      I have seen a few different names for it. You can also call it “minky dimple micro chenille.” It was labelled as chenille at the fabric store where I bought it. At least we know what it is and it’s so soft and fun.

    Great tutorial! Just wondering how these hold up in washer and dryer. Would the rattles rust, or the crinkle paper melt?

    Great project. My only question or concern is the plastic. Could it mold when washing and staying damp for a while? I think the prepackaged wrinkle plastic is mold resistant but not sure about recycled plastics.

      I would hope that plastic cereal bags are safe as they package cereal in them. But I have not researched this so can’t give you an answer.

      I made a note at the end of the video but you might have missed it. You can wash them in the washing machine but you need to air dry. So no dryer.

      Some ribbons are better quality then others. The ribbons that have a good woven edge and won’t fray are okay. Just stay away from the cheaper ribbons.

      Yes, they can go in the washing machine. Let them air dry if you put in the rattles. If no rattles then you can put them in the dryer too.

    The rattle inserts do not meet government standards for infant toys. Infants and toddlers might choke if the rattle comes out of the cloth cover.

      You may be right. But you should never a leave a baby unattended and toys should always be checked for safety before using.

      @@CraftyPattiArtsCrafts , the rattles are small and are a choking hazard. They do not meet federal requirements for babies and toddlers. Even though you are with a little one, they can be fast and swallow something and choke. Ask me about that. Better safe than sorry. Are you willing to be responsible if a child is hurt or dies from your irresponsible suggestion.
