Travis Pastrana sets record for Mt. Washington hillclimb

The 149-year-old Mt. Washington Auto Road has seen the likes of horses and carriages, camels, people, bicycles and most famously, competition race cars. On September 8th, Traveling at an average speed of nearly 72mph in a Vermont SportsCar prepared, BFGoodrich Tires-shod 2011 Subaru Impreza WRX STI rally car, four-time Rally America National Champion Travis Pastrana made sure the project name, Red Bull Speed Chasers, lived up to its name. He reached the summit faster than anyone else in history by clocking an officially timed run of 6 minutes 20.47 seconds, besting the previous record by more than twenty seconds.

Nope. He does just about everything but he's definitely not the master of everything. There are a number of rally drivers that can blow his doors off. Colin Mcrae was the best ever, and Ken Block (if I'm not mistaken) is the best American driver now.

the great thing about Travis is not only can he ride a crosser like no one else and drive off road in a car he always has a smile on his face!
I drove up Mt. Washington a couple of weeks ago....my palms were sweating and my heart racing all the way to the top. One of the scarier things I've done. My hats are off to these guys.
I've been on that road when I was a kid and remember lookin out the window and down to nothing but a couple rocks to stop you from tumbling to your death of a cliff, also you have to share the road with other drivers, really sketchy to just drive up but to rally it, is impressive!!!!!!!!!!!
Yeah I was 6 years old and couldnt even look out the window anymore, just 1000 foot cliffs to rock
Get out to Colorado and speed run the trail ridge road in RMNP or better yet get a road bike and ride down to estes park and you will see what sheer drops look like.

Amazing. I went up this road on a motorcycle and part of it is absolutely scary at slow speed. Quite a feat.

The previous record was 10 mins 44secs set back in 1954 (according to wikipedia). So pretty good course selection there from Travis's PR team.
Wikipedia isn't the best source for reliable information. It says in the info that he beat it by "over 20 seconds" so the previous record was between 20 and 30 seconds slower than his, not several minutes, lmao.
I like how he thanked his co driver. Politeness is underrated.

I'll wager Sebastian Loeb would do it far quicker. However, If TP can increase the profile of Rallying in the 'States though, then this is a good thing for the sport.

Drove the Auto Road last year in the rain. That is one crazy/carry road at normal speed and it isn't very wide either. Good on you Travis!!!

i swear travis is the most modest person i have ever seen
i hiked this mountain and stayed in the lake of the clouds hut two nights. it took 3 days to hike from the bottom to the top to the bottom. its an AMAZING mountain. not just saying that, it is truly unbeleivable. we had clear skys and 80mph+ winds with 40lb frame packs. climbing the devils staircase took 4 hours by itself on the third day we hiked behind mt monroe and over a section of the presidential range. driving up it in that time is mind boggling after hiking it on foot. HIKED IT LIKED IT

@Kirbyguy222 Not at all, if you hear Loeb (one of the first to have used it very successfully), Ogier and other youngsters the note system is like "120 METERS, right 130 plus long), the "meters" is always added to avoid confusion with the steering angle.
