Kitchen oils never dry, so if it needs to dry you can use linseed or walnut oil

Got here from the Distance Learning group on FB. I would love to see how it translates if you could run it through a press. I like the acid/non-toxic approach. Thank you for this great series Hannah!!!

I am ordering a press for my home so I can run the same plate through the press to compare it to the hand printed plate. Try playing with white glue on the surface to get some bright whites.

Thank you, Hannah! This really helps as I figure out how we're going to cover intaglio

Camilla my learning curve on this was the students really need to seal the plate. Otherwise it's too absorbent and drinks up all their ink. Also if they are painting their image with white tinted gel onto a plate stained black the plate may look one way and print another because it's all about texture. (you know this) and also remind them not to clean their plates with water T_T

@@hannahskoonberg I've supplied them with wood glue in anticipation of that. I think we're going to mostly use thread and cut manila folders. I'm afraid we must clean with water, though as we're using Akua. I'll just have to get them to really seal the plates well.

@@camillataylor1934 I would just get a little water onto a rag and buff it down. Just warn them not to wash it in the sink lol.

Wow, thanks so much for sharing this Hannah. I do silkscreen and intaglio so I have materials at home.

When you try this. The key is that you are building up the material to reduce the texture of the fabric. Having a white medium helps but you can't judge how it will print by how it looks. Turn it on it's side to see if it is fully smooth or if there is texture.

I’m wondering how you could now alter the plate, after printing with oil based ink? Is degreaser enough?

The plate will be stained but It's pretty well sealed at this point. I could clean it up with some mineral spirits and make some changes if I needed. Mainly if I needed more light tones I could add another layer of medium.

Hannah I would really love to see this on eg BK Rives, put through an etching press.

Ah good call. I made this during the pandemic and the studio was locked down but maybe I could print it again now that I have access to a press again.

i hope you are not throwing away all that ink. looks like you had a lot.

I never throw away extra ink. I just fold it into some tin foil and save it for later. I then will put a fingerprint of the ink on the outside of the foil to mark the color.
