  • 'Wild Wild Country' is one of the biggest hits on Netflix this year. It follows Indian spiritual leader, Bhagwan Shree Rajneesh, now known as Osho, who set up a commune in rural Oregon in the '80s and clashed with locals. We visit an Osho event in Brampton, Ontario where they are embracing the new attention their group has received since the series premiered.

    Honestly I just think these meditations just come down to adults needing a safe space to access parts of them they gave up or stifled after childhood. It feels good and freeing to scream, cry, laugh, flail around, jump up and down - but these expressions are seen as childlike and will have other adults looking at you like you're crazy. So in a sense, all spirituality aside, these meditations totally make sense.

    I watched the documentary and thought it was great. Funny thing is that I had been to the exact spot where they all were in Antelope because of a camp. Now it's "Washington Family Ranch", I didn't even realize it until a few months later when I watched the doc. I asked my parents about it since they lived in Portland during the 80s and they said they bought tents that the followers had used once they disbanded.
    I also go to the Burgerville that was poisoned every time I drive along the Columbia gorge, which is many times a year.

    Osho showed the mirror to ,
    society (how easily malleable they are under influence of a religion, and how they can be made to function beyond any reasoning)
    Democracy (how easily corruptible and full of plot holes it is, and can be bent to a ridiculous degree)
    Politicians (how they visciously target whom they deem a threat all while abandoning reasoning)
    And finally, the immense power a single person with determination holds.

    I think the original Osho group could stand for much applause and criticism; applause for doubling down on what you believe in and initially minding your own business (the embodiment of American ideals), but when the movement was questioned and challenged, I think the community's response escalated things in a way completely dissonant with the ideals of control and acknowledgment and conversation. That being said, the contemporary movement (like in this video) is a beautiful thing. I think reasonably summarized as exercising a political neutrality while reflecting, meditating, and manifesting primal impulses. All extremely beneficial for mental health, longevity, and personal development, not just in my opinion, but also in many, MANY bodies of research. Cheers and well done.

      Life can be more joyful than how most people in modern American society live. That’s of the utmost importance, not something to dismiss. We desperately need to improve our culture and society and way of life, and more suffering and strength is OBVIOUSLY not what we need...

    • @Unclejamsarmy
      @Unclejamsarmy 5 лет назад +7

      Mourning Doves well, Jesus was a man too. Idk, it’s not my thing, but religion helps a lot of people. In terms of the orgies “all day” that’s not what seemed to be the case in the documentary. From what I could tell, Oshos thing was just saying, do what you want. None of the suppression and control of sexuality of other religions. Some people wanted to have polyamorous relationships or orgies, some didn’t.
      But yeah, pure hedonism is unlikely to lead to truly joyful life imo too, but some hedonism is absolutely necessary for a truly joyful life, and most other religions and dominant cultures today deny that fact, except for mindless materialism (which Osho also indulged at least for himself).

    • @0Doves0
      @0Doves0 5 лет назад +3

      @@Unclejamsarmy in Christian belief Jesus is the son of God meaning he is basically god in the flesh. Also yes they were. One of the main teavhings of osho was about having better sex. And in the documentary it talks about how at night the towns people could hear the people going at it. Also the constant nudity and the fact outsiders would some times see people having sex during the day is pretty telling that there was a lot of sex going on.
      One of main problem with osho is that people act like osho's teachings are revolutionary when really he is just taking things from different religions and twisting it to fit his agenda.
      He is also very hipocritical. He claims that he is not a religion and that people were free to do what ever but then yet people prayed, acted, and dressed the same way. He says that he doesnt want to be seen as a god or higher power but likes to be called osho which means master in Japanese.
      Also yes it is good to have hedonism sometimes but it is also good to struggle so you grow as a person.

    • @Unclejamsarmy
      @Unclejamsarmy 5 лет назад +3

      Mourning Doves yeah I don’t think we’re really disagreeing. People can believe whatever they want, but obviously virgins don’t have kids. Jesus was a man. An interesting great man who was a role model for humanity in many ways.
      Yes Osho was extremely hypocritical. Yes struggle is also necessary. But imo it’s extremely clear that the obsession w work and struggle and some of the remnants of our Puritan roots in America are a bad thing, and I think the OPs post was a reflection of that, the kind of ascetic reaction common to many religions that says “seeking joy is bad, life is just struggle and suffering and good people just pursue that”. That’s nonsense, and we have too much of that still. That’s why Americans spend more time working per week, with less vacation in a year, than any country on earth except Mexico. We need to change that attitude. That being said, as I alluded to, there’s some embrace of hedonism - but only in terms of mindless materialism, social status, and power. The last 2 aren’t even really hedonism, but what passes for it in our culture, and materialism can be but is in my opinion a much worse avenue for that than sex or partying etc.
      We also have a loneliness epidemic. Partially because of these screwed up values.
      So basically I think we need more real hedonism and to eschew the shame and asceticism remaining from our Puritan roots. Work less, socialize more, better sex lives, go to concerts and community events or whatever else. Genuine joy is desperately needed in our society, we don’t need even more emphasis on struggle and suffering and work

    Osho sanyassins are as diverse as any other group of people.
    Some practice this type of meditation which was designed by Osho to allow the busy western mind to find quietness.
    Many practice more "normal" meditations like Vipassana or (in my case) Shikantaza/Zazen.
    Many older sanyassins no longer meditate at all. (Many still do).
    The only thing we all have in common is a love and respect for Osho.
    BTW, there are still many sanyassins living in communal situations all over the world.
    Rajneeshpuram failed (IMO) because far too many of Americas highly educated youth were attracted, so it had to be destroyed. Remember also that it was Reagan who was president at the time and Osho was VERY rude about him.
    And of course Sheela who was in charge was an awful human being.

    I have been into Yoga for over 35 years, but when I was in my early twenties and still searching, I remember looking into Rajneesh's organization and did not feel it was spiritual. When I saw the documentary, Wild, Wild Country, I understood why. For one thing, their practices of intense hyperventilation, indulging in one's emotions, and the allowance of alcohol ie two beers a day explains why some of these people became hyper-sexual and violent. In short, their lifestyle was too self-indulgent and had no restrictions on the senses. Ramana Maharshi said it is impossible to gain Self Realization without controlling the senses because they are like wild horses pulling us back into worldly life and further away from the spiritual life.
    If we look at the system of Chakras, they are a ladder to higher consciousness, and the lowest, the Muladhara Chakra located at the base of the spine happens to be the primary consciousness of this world, which also explains why sex colours everything in this world and is one of the biggest commodities. However, we are meant to transcend these lower forms of energy expression and not indulge in them if we wish to transcend human consciousness and become more divine. In other words, it is almost impossible to reach higher ground if the senses are not kept under control and this explains why Rajneesh's community lost control and everything got out of hand.
    Jesus said, "No one can serve two masters. Either you will hate the one and love the other, or you will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and money" (Matthew 6:24). Even though Osho was not directly responsible for Sheela's behaviour, he made her his secretary, so my question is this. As a man claiming to be realized, why didn't Osho SEE what kind of a person she was? Why did he leave all of his followers in her hands? Is that the behaviour of Guru? Osho also had a drug addiction to laughing gas and may have also taken his own life with the help of his doctor, further abandoning his followers. Osho is not the only Guru who has fallen taking some of his followers with him, almost ALL the big Gurus that come to the West are accused of sexual misconduct. Why do they come to the West? In my opinion, some of them come here for fame and fortune. North American people are very vulnerable and gullible, especially the rich. They have all the material things they want but have not found happiness and peace and this is where these Gurus come in and claim they can fill that void.
    The only TRUE Guru is within you and no words or teachings will connect you to that Source, but practice stilling the mind to listen to that Guru will. This is the essence of Yoga: Chitta Vritti Nirodha. There are many methods mentioned in The Sutras of Patanjali, but the point is to STILL and PURIFY the mind and then we experience our own true Divine Nature. Hell is whenever our minds are not clean, so with a pure mind we experience heaven. "Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God" (Matthew 5:8). Yoga, especially Pranayama, purifies the mind as does meditation and a life of selfless service. However, I never saw any methods to purify the mind being done in the Rajneesh community, just indulging in one's feelings and emotions, which in reality, just keeps you in those emotions because the more we give energy to these thoughts, the more they become entrenched in our mind and cause hell for us.
    Osho's notion of Sannyasin was also troubling since a true Sannyasin is someone who RENOUNCES worldly life. A true Sannyasin "has turned away from all material possessions and emotional ties. They now live only to perfect their understanding of the spiritual world. This is seen as a state of sacrifice that leads to final liberation from the cycle of death and rebirth, or moksha. For many advanced yogis, becoming a Sannyasin is the final stage of yoga practice. They can devote themselves wholly to the pursuit of the spiritual understanding that comes from yoga." Yet, the Rajneesh's Sannyasins were just the opposite, indulging in sense gratification, while the Guru looked on and said nothing. In my opinion, his huge following was the result of very few restrictions to their lifestyles. We all want freedom, but our freedom cannot be taken at the expense of others. It was clear that Rajneesh's followers did not set a very good spiritual example, carrying weapons and indulging in sex out in the open for the towns' people to see. If our spiritual practices do not create peace for not only ourselves, but for all those who are around us and in our community, then it is clear we may not be following the correct method to enlightenment and we may end up doing more harm than good ~ Namaste

      Yuva Yoga.
      It seems to me that Osho tried to emulate the notorious reputation and sex focus that spiritual rebel Aleister Crowley was known for.
      Whether Crowley was a sincere seeker and teacher, is irrelevant to the fact that many have ruined their lives and those of those around them by either misinterpreting Crowley or trying to emulate what they have heard about him.
      Osho was always eager to show that he was the best and supreme enlightener that humanity ever had and so he felt he had to match and out-do Aleister.

      My now ex-fiancé broke up with me because he decided to follow Osho's cult. He randomly came to me while crying letting me know that he can either choose the love of his life ( me at the time) or this cult. He chose the cult. And it broke me . A year after that I am still trying to heal . I made some bad decisions regarding partners after he broke up with me because I lowered my standards so much. When someone who promised to marry you leaves you for something like this, it becomes really hard for you to believe that you deserve a decent kind partner, so I settled for alcoholics and abusers .. I am in a better place now. I learned it tough at a really young age but I am moving forward with my life.

    • @YoginiCeleste
      @YoginiCeleste 6 лет назад +14

      Nada Errabie -- Sounds like you are much better off without him. Thank God you did not marry the guy and have children with him when this happened to you. Selfish men do not think of anyone but themselves, not even their own children. Sometimes we need these lessons to develop our understanding. I bet you can spot a selfish man like that now and would not even go 10 feet near him. Most relationship lessons are tough, but we need them to become more aware and develop self knowledge and you have done just that. Good for you! My most powerful lesson that really opened my eyes was with a charming but deceitful, manipulative man. I almost died from that relationship, but I realized later that he was one of my greatest teachers and now I see through deceit and darkness like an Owl. It is true that "whatever doesn't kill you makes you stronger"(Nietzsche). If you had married this guy, I don't believe you would be saying that you are "in a better place now" and that is exactly why that had to happen. All experiences, good or bad, are just lessons that come to teach us something, so we can continue to evolve and rise above the mundane of human existence. None of these experiences last anyway, so we need to let them go, but extract the lessons and keep on moving forward as Demetria Crummie stated. In truth, you are a perfect child of God and nothing or no one can change that ~ Namaste

    The editing of Dynamic Meditation in this video is a misrepresentation of the entire process. Yes, it looks crazy and is a crazy experience, but it really helps to release all the tension held in the body accumulated over years of repressed emotions. I have practiced this every day for a month with great results. Osho realized that modern and Western people needed something different than the traditional seated meditation. I’ve heard his personal Dr. say that he would prescribe Dynamic Meditation for only certain amount of time. Watching it on video is hilarious. If you get the chance to do this with a group, do it. You won’t regret it.

    I think Osho himself had great philosophical insight, in spite of his blatant materialism. His followers, however, went off the deep end and they formed a community that not only were outsiders not prepared for, but the followers themselves were not prepared for. I have a collection of Osho's writings and lectures. Osho was ahead of his time. Maybe in 100 years, people will be ready for his ideas. But not in the 1980s, and still not even today. Our planetary consciousness needs to evolve to even consider what he said.

      Maybe materialism is the wrong word - but owning 93 Rolls Royce vehicles didn't exactly help his image. I think it was essentially a PR stunt to attract more westerners (who, by our natures are highly materialistic and consumerist) to his teachings. You really can't "sell" spiritual teachings in America unless you attach some kind of Law of Attraction/Prosperity Gospel/Wealth Attraction teachings to it. Our spirituality is highly materialist.

    • @bluesage1528
      @bluesage1528 5 лет назад +9

      Hi edthewave. He did not own even a single car. If we are talking facts. But the main thing is that people for some reason equate a spiritual Master to the crowd surrounding him/her. If we judge Jesus and his work on this earth by christians... brrr, not a good work I would say. Or Mohammed.. Or Krishnamurti... Do you know about those who surrounded Krishna? When I was reading I wanted to cry. Have you read about Sita and Ram? The situation was so ugly that many Indians are still avoiding embarrassing facts. What about Shiva? Listen to Sadhguru, he talks a lot about Shiva. His crowd was beyond understanding and tolerance for many people, then and now. The Master comes because people are suffering in darkness and confusion. The Master does not come to enlightened people. Then there will be no need. He is literally planted in the midst of the darkness and uses everything, every trick to wake up those who are capable of waking up and disturb the sleep of those who are still a long way from waking up. His methods and tricks would reflect those who are around him. Whatever works for them, he will use it! So you are right that many tricks of Osho are to mesmerize westeners. And look! They are still mesmerized! So many years later! Good work!

    I gotta make an explanation about sex cult, My observation - Here is the thing a common human often wonders or thinks in an unhealthy marriage or relationship about other men or women. The reason why all the cheating and madness happen. With this experiment i truly believe by letting all of it out you get to the true calmness within yourself. Even physically you can truly fall in love with a person and you indulge in it. This leads to a road of honesty and trust. Also instead of hooking up slowly through all many years , you get done with it once n for all. After that there is space for love and only love.

      Read the journalists in this videos praise for ma Anand Sheela in her article. She says that she is an antihero and that “the world could use a little more sheela”. This is a woman who poisoned people, took advantage of them, exploited homeless people to rig an election. Drugged said homeless people and then kicked them out when they were not useful. Disgusting human rights abuses and this hipster “journalist” thought she was a strong funny antihero role model.

      Watch the Vox video or TED video about Cults. basically , vulnerable people looking for a sense of community. people would either be too disillusioned once they got in, or they got baited to join , realizing its sucks but are prevented from going out.

    Man, I was just a gradeschool kid when this shit was going down around me, and we forget that ex Rajneeshis are still living all around us. But Wild Wild Country really brought it all back.
    For what it's worth, the salad bar at Spooky's Pizza was probably going to give everyone a disease anyways.
