This genre is what we call ‘pub-rock’. So many rock bands from Australia started playing at local pubs, so the grunge and all that comes from the Aussie pub scene culture of locals, working class mostly, sinking some cold tinnies, getting tipsy (many times drunk 😂) after a hard days work sweating from the heat haha. Super iconic and the pub-rock sound/vibe is very common in a lot of legendary Aussie music!

It's hard to imagine hearing this song for the first time. This song has been part of the Australian soundtrack for nearly 35 years and there wouldn't be many Aussies, of any age, who wouldn't know it. I know this song inside out and upside down, I've heard it many hundreds of times and probably played it close to a hundred times. You will still hear this song played every week by cover bands in pubs all across the country.

These guys originated near where I grew up in the late70s 80s in Sydney. Saw them a few times at pubs along Sydney northern beaches. This particular song is about the lead singer Mark seeing a girl he fancied while working as a window dresser!! at Warringah Mall (all northern beach-ites will be familiar). She worked in Woolworths or Safeways supermarket whatever. Eventually he came up with the courage to speak to her and ask her out. She just told him to piss off.
We saw them a couple of years ago at Cremorne (yes they are still around) where he told that story.
They still sounded as good as ever and one of the guys' 80 year old mother was there right up the front!

Always great to see a reaction from someone to a song they have never heard before but which has almost become stale to those that know it. These are songs that we have come to take for granted over the years and moved on from, then you come along with a whole fresh perspective and it makes me realise what great music we were privileged to grow up with, and makes me sad that this style of music has had it's day.

The Choirboys is an Australian hard rock and Australian pub rock band from Sydney formed as Choirboys in 1979 with mainstays Mark Gable on lead vocals, Ian Hulme on bass guitar, Brad Carr on lead guitar and Lindsay Tebbutt on drums. In preparation for their second album Big Bad Noise in 1988, the band changed their name to The Choirboys. The band line-up saw many changes from 1983 to 2007, while releasing 8 studio albums. Their 1987 single "Run to Paradise" remains their biggest commercial success.Choirboys formed in the Northern Beaches area of Sydney as a hard rock pub band in 1979. Original members were Brad Carr on lead guitar, Mark Gable on vocals, Ian Hulme on bass guitar and Lindsay Tebbutt on drums.
In 1983, after one of their demos was sent to Albert Productions record producer George Young (ex-The Easybeats, older brother of Angus and Malcolm Young of AC/DC) they signed to Albert Records. Jim Manzie produced their self-titled debut album, Choirboys, which was released in July. The first single, "Never Gonna Die," followed in August and reached No. 30 on the Australian Kent Music Report Singles Chart.[3] Australian TV and music personality Ian "Molly" Meldrum claimed the album was "destined to become an Aussie classic". They toured as support to The Angels and Rose Tattoo and then Cold Chisel invited Choirboys to support them on their Last Stand Tour. However in November, Gable's vocal cords had ruptured and they were unable to join that tour - they spent 1984 and 1985 in hiatus waiting for him to recover. Peace out.

G'day Mate. Glad you appreciate these guys. You might call it "core rock", we call it "pub rock". These bands were the product of relentless gigs in suburban pubs, beer barns, workingmans' clubs, and football clubs. Gigging 5 or 6 nights a week. Often not taking the stage until after 11pm and trying to win over an audience that had been drinking since 6. Most of these pub rock bands had multiple, multiple attempts to crack the US market, and America rejected them. (The Angels, Midnight Oil, Cold Chisel, Jimmy Barnes, the list goes on. And on. And on.....) Now, decades later, we get good people like yourself telling us how good our own music is.

Love this tune, it’s the sound of my childhood growing up in the 80s. There is also an American band called “The Quireboys” classic rock too. Great tune called “Hey you” 👍🏻
