Wow! Hadn't seen this one. I adore this trail!! That was my backyard for 6 years. I rode (mtn), hiked and ran everything from just above Skull often all the way to Topanga on a weekly basis. Sometimes several times per week in different modes at different speeds and distances. As you know, once you get past the split above Skull you have the trail to yourself until you get to the hub coming up from the valley side. I ran it last week and saw no one over a 6 miler out and back over "lunch". I think it helps that no dogs are allowed up there. Plus there are those two pitches up to the (now greatly enhanced) tower that casual hikers don't like. Lots of snakes up there on hot days. I've also been shadowed by a large cat more than once as well. You always see their paw prints in the hardened mud. I rescued a trail runner who had collapsed on the road well past Eagle rock. He had also miscalculated and run out of fluid and energy. I preferred that trail when it was more of a trail. The fire up there by eagle rock a few years ago required bringing in a lot of equipment and expanding the trail into a fire road in places and it feels too open now, but I'm not really complaining. I have a new section of the backbone above Malibu that I regularly run with my boxer. Quite steep in places, but a great run and never anyone on it either!
That's awesome, GW! We used to be up there at least once a week as well. Really cool that you saw some cats up there -- we always wanted to but never did. Lots of snakes for sure though. Love that you've got a whole backbone section all to yourself. That is LA livin' at its finest!! ❤️

That's my loop!! Up Temescal Ridge Trail to the viewpoint and then back down on Temescal Canyon Trail past the bridge and the waterfall. 10/10 would recommend - but I agree with you - go early and bring a mask there are tons of people on that loop.
No way! Do you live close by also? Have yet to find a better loop in LA, it’s where we always bring friends and family visiting from out of town. We like going up the waterfall route as well, but more so in the winter when there’s more running water, or if we start a bit later so there is more light on the trail. Do you have any other favorites in the area?
livehardxlovehard I do live close by - in Venice. I wish I did have some other favorite trails in the area! I prefer going up the steeper ridge trail and down the less steep canyon trail because of my knees.

I feel you Adam! Those frickin snakes! My biggest worry is mountain lions. You two always start your hikes so early, you don’t ever worry about seeing one? I don’t start a hike till like 10am and I just embrace the heat because I’m so scared to run into a mountain lion.
Hadn't really thought about mountain lions too much... until NOW! Haha. Bears are also often a big concern when starting before daylight ... but we try to make a lot of sound and avoid running too fast. It's worth it to us to avoid the crowds that descend after about 8AM!

I love my cloud ventures and I’ll even sometimes run in my old cloud aces because they’re both super light but sturdy on a rocky trail.

That’s a great idea! We should do that. We do so much living hard but we don’t talk about the love hard as much. We’ve been together ten years now. Wedding in France cancelled twice because of coronavirus, but the place where we are doing it was nice enough to reschedule for next June, so that’s something we have to look forward to in 2022!
