  • I meet up with two friends at Zzyzx and we attempt to reach the Avawatz Mountains. Days 21-23 of my hike across the California desert.
    I recommend using the closed captions, as I sometimes mumble a bit . . . .

I just found your site. Wow! My hat's off to you. Very impressed. That is some tough terrain. TBH I am so jealous. I've been going through the East Mojave since 1999. I spent weeks in transcendental solitude travelling, camping, exploring that holy land. Now I'm unable to leave the house due to serious health issues so I'm living vicariously through your exploits. This section you do and Devil's Playground/Granite mountains is my favorite terrain in the entire East Mojave. Thank you!

I'd say your friends deserted you! For good reason but still disappointing. At my age I just wish I could join you- even though it's a year later lol. (Saw you with Nick Zentner.) Enjoying your journey and Geology content!

Another great video adventure. I can't wait till next week in the Avawatz proper. Since you are on the governance board for the Desert Research Center, can you help me research the Avawatz Crown Mine/Morris A C Mill Site near Old Mormon Spring? I'm planning on hiking back to the general area to locate a forgotten prospect in front of a unnamed seep. I have to GPS location figured out but just trying to find all historical records of the area. I have found descendents of the mine's founder who are trying to locate historical records of their family's mine. Both descendents are up there in age and would not be able to hike to the remote claim. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Haven't had a chance to look into the Avawatz Crown Mine yet, but will try to do a spot of research when I get a chance. I don't know him personally, but an expert on this sort of stuff is Gregg Wilkerson at CSU Bakersfield . . .
