    Your walking into Olancha just reminded me of an episode of the The Twilight Zone, A Hundred Yards Over The Rim, where a 49'er walks over a dune into the relatively present day town of Grant.

    I was there two weeks ago with my geology class and we found some small elongated crystals in between the columnar joints. My professor said it could be tourmaline aka schorl due to the cleavage. I found a small piece of rainbow obsidian by Mono Lake.

    • @tecto_nick
      @tecto_nick 3 месяца назад

      Hmm . . . tourmaline rarely has observable cleavage . . . or did they say/mean "striations"? To be honest, I'm not sure this is an environment I'd expect to see tourmaline in . . .

    I was just camping in the Granite Mountains this last week, Christmas 2023, and it was amazing how wet everything was after this year of rain we have had. Just scratching the sand with your boot exposes very moist soil below, and all of the creeks bore sharp bank edges cut by the recent water flow. Flora and fauna were in full bloom as well.

    • @tecto_nick

      Longest day was roughly 50 km (across Death Valley). One pair of boots (Asolo), which I’m still using to this day but are almost dead now (~1000 km) And an ancient pair of blue Superfeet insoles (2000 km??).

      @@tecto_nick I hear you. It’s a weird place, with so many tilted planes (vast alluvial fans that approach planes) and granodiorite or quartz monzonite. Damn, I love the Mojave. Once, I came over a drainage at the north end of the Old Woman mountains where there was a kid dragging a massive magnet in the wash. I’m sure he was told that magnetite = gold. I waited in quiet until he was called for supper, ‘cause I was a little freaked out by another human. My prof told me that there was a myth that that was the case.
