  • If you've been through a design interview before, you know the pain of design challenges. You never know what to expect, so it's always hard to prepare for them. You guys may know I recently landed a new job as a Product Designer, so I thought I'd share the design challenge I did for the interview that helped me get my current position.

    A couple of takeaways I have drawn from this video that might help you stand out during your job searching:
    1. It is important in the first instance to think through the whole process in order to understand what the scope of the solution is going to be so we don't spend more time than needed or we run out of time to conclude the challenge.
    2. It is noticeable that during the discovery phase she put on her researcher's hat and that was her main focus. It is important for a moment to think only about understanding the problem in depth. Ask yourself, how do I understand this problem, what resources do I need to soak up the issue? While it is vital in the design process to have a strategic vision to consider the different forces and tendencies that influence the solution, it is equally important to be able to focus, even for a moment, just on the user; to look in detail to get information like the one you proposed: why is this problem happening to this person?, what would be the positive sides of improving this situation?, what is the user not seeing that influences their problem?, what problems do people face in tracking their situation?, what tools do they use today? What i'm trying to say if focus real deep in the user and the particular problem, rather than thinking in the common design proccess that we learn at college.
    3. Going back to the issue of being strategic, you have to consider the whole context, which means thinking about integrations with other apps, the permissions that this app is going to ask the user for and also the empty states; what happens when I haven't added content yet or I have already consumed what I had in my profile?, how do I communicate and convince the user to continue using the app? I haven't seen this kind of approach much in design challenge videos and it's appreciated that she showed it.
    That's what I take away from the video, thank you very much for the information, Linda.

    Hey Linda! Loveeee your stuff and how real you are! I have a Q about the time frame - Was the 5 hours stated in the brief and did you have to prove it was only 5 hours? It just seems like a lot of work you've done from initial thoughts, considering the right copywriting in app (unless its your strength) and setting up a clean presentation at the end. And I may have missed it in other videos but what level was the product designer role, and did it maybe influence the time set for the challenge? Thanks :)!

    • @LindaAhn
      @LindaAhn  2 года назад +5

      Thank you! Because of how much work I put into it they asked me at the end how long it actually took and I just told them - which was around 10 hours.
      I was applying for a junior role but ended up getting an intermediate role instead.

    Thank you!
    I like to focus on research. I like what you did for your secondary research. Did you also directly survey people in Reddit?
    Would it be a good idea to also talk through my thinking about primary research and outline the questions I would ask users if I had time to interview them ? (Then of course there wouldn’t be any time to conduct it) or would it be best not to mention that ?

    • @LindaAhn
      @LindaAhn  2 года назад

      I would say, if you didn’t do it then it’s not worth mentioning. Unless they ask you at the end what you would have done if you had time than having an answer ready would be good!

      @@LindaAhn I think you did a great job, but these challenges ask too much of designers. You need to invest so much of your time, and you might not even get the job. I am in 3 interviews and have to do 3 challenges... I'd rather they only give me 1h to do it and assess the result based on the circumstances.
