The great thing about Russo, was that he always gave the midcard wrestlers something to do. Rather than just waste time and wrestle to get to the top that way. Russo, made a lot of midcard wrestlers, fun and enjoyable. I also liked how he made wrestling crazy and unpredictable. He treated main eventers just like he treated midcard guys. He genuinely wanted guys to find away to the main event.

You’re right, to an extent. Those low/mid-card talent were essentially experiments for Russo’s ideas. McMahon had the chokehold in terms of direction and focus of main-event matches and the world wrestling federation championship. Anything else was Russo allowed to portray his ideas. Exhibit A: The Blue Blazer. Enough said.

I love how over Russo was here. Must've been before it became cool to hate him and diminish his accomplishments. As someone who witnessed the shit-show that was the WWF in 1995 (with some of the bad elements bleeding into '96 and '97), who saw the downfall of their creative output after Russo and Ferrara left, and who saw how WCW was at an alltime low in the three months he was gone at the beginning of 2000, I value his contributions to the wrestling business greatly. Including what he did in WCW and TNA.
I honestly believe WWF/E might no longer even exist, if he hadn't been around to write their shows for those years that he did. Because they were in horrible shape back in 1995 and then WCW gained traction with the nWo. Now, WCW would've probably gone out of business either way, since the AOL/Time Warner merger had nothing to with anyone in the wrestling business, nor did the fact that WCW was to be sold without a tv deal. So WCW might not have been able to benefit from whatever happened in New York, but WWE surely was in a position to suffer from staying on the path they were on before Russo joined creative. Which is the same path they have gone back to for many, many years, now. The only difference being that they're well established and doing great from a business standpoint. Today, putting out boring, horrible shows doesn't hurt them. Or atleast doesn't kill them. But back then? Without the attitude era happening in between? The landscape of professional wrestling might've been totally different, if it wasn't for Vince Russo.
More than anything, he got the best out of that company. Obviously other people were important, too. McMahon, Ross, Austin, The Undertaker, Kane, Mankind, Jim Johnston - you name it. But before Russo (and Ferrara) all those pieces never really clicked. And if you believe Austin would've reached the level, that he did, anyway, you need to look at how WWE has handled similar situations, since. Without Russo - or somebody like him - calling McMahon out on his BS and guiding him in the right direction, all the potential in the world won't get you very far.
On the other hand, Russo had the perfect boss for his creativity to flourish. Someone, who had his back, whose word was the law, and who was able make good ideas even better (which Russo himself has stated on many occasions).
I believe Vince and Vince benefited greatly from each other, and neither is as good by himself, as they were together.

But Russo didn't ruin wrestling... He is part of a bigger issue that ruined it-- the death of Kayfabe. Dirtsheets, MSG, McMahon admitting it, etc. And you have to remember that Russo's "crash TV" style was a direct response to the then-young IWC. The internet did more harm than he ever did. People knew it was fake for years, but the IWC made everyone a critic who can't just suspend disbelief and enjoy the show. Now people judge wrestlers by their reputation in shoots and not their work.

Here's my thought of Vince Russo. He'd became a genius creating S.E.X in 2002 but, he once was a loose cannon in WCW through the 90's bringing the business the right way until the incident came in 2000 bash as the beach ppv. I'll cut him some slack he tell the truth sometime but not all the time

WCW had a lot of egomaniacs. Something you have to notice

Say what you will about the state WCW was in when Vince Russo went there, he was the guy in charge of the show when the company lost 60 million in one year.

6:34 Russo is such a tool. Probably the quietest chant I've ever heard someone cutting a promo pause to acknowledge.

They were chanting pretty loud minutes b4 that and this was a good promo like it or not he still a way more creative writer than 94% of the writers ever in pro wrestling atleast.he tries to develop characters instead of just random rince and repeat bullshit

  • @DUBtheTIGER

I'm not saying they asked for it, just that he thought it was a worthwhile experiment (though obviously there was too much of it in his WCW-early TNA work). He felt that fans were tired of the same old wrestling. For example, Russo is the guy who said to McMahon "good guys vs bad guys is passe, let the fans decide who to cheer for"...and that's all a part of the same notion. He wanted to make even smarks go "was that supposed to happen?" ...not saying it was good, just saying why he did it IMO.

As much as Russo will never admit it, the reason he did so well in wwe is because vince McMahon has an ability to take a good idea, tweak it a little and make it a great idea... Russo is never short of ideas.... he would make one hell of an on screen character in wwe today

It’s fact, read the books and listen to the podcasts. Vince has stolen just about every other good idea out there. Why dya think WWE has gone from bad to worse? WWE hasn’t been good since 2003/04 that was the end of it. Vince has had no competition since roughly 1999 as WCW started to die and all he has had are pretty much his and Stephanie’s ideas.... u know it’s Stephanie who is to blame for the over scripting and micro managing of talent. Nobody can get over with the fans anymore because the ‘superstars’ are no longer portraying characters that were an extension of themselves. In the 80s the comic book style presentation really worked because it was new and different to what was being done elsewhere, plus the wrestlers still got a bit more freedom to be themselves. But really Hulk Hogan was the glue that held it all together and that was stolen from Verne Gagne and the AWA, along with several others. Today Vince McMahon is literally a senile old man who is more out of touch than ever, look at all that Botox and hair job he has had, the man is like 80 years old and has a face like Michael Jackson... Russo even said himself when he went back there for a day Stephanie laid down the law to him and that’s what made him leave. Today WWE is worse than it’s ever been and it’s because there is no competition on a Monday night pushing them. Their product is mediocre at best and will never improve while fox gives the $1 Billion over 5 years for tv rights.

The IWC didn't make anyone do anything. Vince Russo tried catering to an audience that "exposed the business". Vince Russo never tried to stay internally consistent. With Russo, it's always, "Everything your watching is a work. Except for what you are watching right now, which is a shoot." He's more interested in fooling his audience than he is satisfying it.

I agree, I'm just saying that his thought process was that more and more fans were getting smart to the business and that he had to find a way to make even the smarks question what they're watching. I wasn't saying it was a good thing, I was saying that the internet did more damage to wrestling than Russo did, which is an undeniable truth

  • @DUBtheTIGER

True. He was good in WWE, though. Not only did HE have to answer to McMahon (though McMahon was very high on his ideas anyway), but also the talent had to answer to McMahon, too. You can't have someone that writes the way he does try to book a bunch of guys who have creative control in their contracts.
I agree, though...he should've been smart enough by 2002 to realize that the shit that made him great in 1998 wasn't working anymore, especially when he pushed his crash TV style THAT far...
