Because they were in horrible shape back in 1995 and then WCW gained traction with the nWo. Now, WCW would've probably gone out of business either way, since the AOL/Time Warner merger had nothing to with anyone in the wrestling business, nor did the fact that WCW was to be sold without a tv deal. So WCW might not have been able to benefit from whatever happened in New York, but WWE surely was in a position to suffer from staying on the path they were on before Russo joined creative. Which is the same path they have gone back to for many, many years, now. The only difference being that they're well established and doing great from a business standpoint. Funny part about Russo mocking the Double J gimmick, is that to this day many casual fans know Jeff Jarrett solely because of that character. They probably have no idea about his WCW stint, let alone TNA or GFW, they remember him as the country singer in the early 90s WWF.
Because Russo doesn't understand the business. He doesn't understand that every promo doesn't need to be a worked shoot. He doesn't understand the matches. He helped the WWE a bit during the Attitude Era but McMahon was the filter that stopped some of the rubbish he came up with in WCW.

I'm not saying they asked for it, just that he thought it was a worthwhile experiment (though obviously there was too much of it in his WCW-early TNA work). He felt that fans were tired of the same old wrestling. For example, Russo is the guy who said to McMahon "good guys vs bad guys is passe, let the fans decide who to cheer for"...and that's all a part of the same notion. He wanted to make even smarks go "was that supposed to happen?" ...not saying it was good, just saying why he did it IMO.
As much as Russo will never admit it, the reason he did so well in wwe is because vince McMahon has an ability to take a good idea, tweak it a little and make it a great idea... Russo is never short of ideas.... he would make one hell of an on screen character in wwe today
It’s fact, read the books and listen to the podcasts. Vince has stolen just about every other good idea out there. Why dya think WWE has gone from bad to worse? Nobody can get over with the fans anymore because the ‘superstars’ are no longer portraying characters that were an extension of themselves. In the 80s the comic book style presentation really worked because it was new and different to what was being done elsewhere, plus the wrestlers still got a bit more freedom to be themselves. But really Hulk Hogan was the glue that held it all together and that was stolen from Verne Gagne and the AWA, along with several others. Today Vince McMahon is literally a senile old man who is more out of touch than ever, look at all that Botox and hair job he has had, the man is like 80 years old and has a face like Michael Jackson... Russo even said himself when he went back there for a day Stephanie laid down the law to him and that’s what made him leave. Their product is mediocre at best and will never improve while fox gives the $1 Billion over 5 years for tv rights.
