A Similar Coat of Paint | Paper Mario: Color Splash Retrospective

  • In this retrospective, we take a look at Paper Mario: Color Splash and see how it applies a similar coat of paint as the previous game. In many ways, Color Splash is just another Sticker Star, implementing a very similar battle system and repeating many of the same tropes. It goes without saying that those who hated Sticker Star and what it represented for the franchise weren't happy, but does Color Splash rise above any of the issues the last game presented? That's what we're here to find out. #PaperMario #ColorSplash #Nintendo

    Many memes & references in the game were most likely a localisation thing. Nintendo of America at that time were known to reference memes. Link between Worlds even had reference to the old unironic version of Doge that felt out of place. Nintendo of Europe's English translations were more straightforward with their translations & jokes. I believe NOA's translations have since been toned down as NOE's uses similar translations for their English versions now.

    A month before this game was supposed to come out it leaked early on the Wii U e shop and a few people got to play it early. I was one of those people and I think that alone makes me have a huge soft spot for this game.

      That's super cool! I actually found out about that too late to incorporate that into the script but it's definitely an interesting little tidbit about Color Splash.

    i think my biggest frustration with color splash is that just after the game where everyone was like "well no, we can't make it like TTYD" but then making this game, they took a lot of ideas and mechanics from sticker star. it's not bad to do something similar to something you've already done, im just confused how it's different!!

      This is exactly my biggest issue with the recent trilogy. Sticker Star changed the series' identity to avoid it being like TTYD, yet they made three games in a row with the same stupid Birdo, Oversized Fan, Sniffit or Whiffit gags. When I saw the fan again in Origami King, I literally went "Oh god, this is the third freakin' game with this stupid joke, and it wasn't even that funny in the first place!"
      Now I liked Origami King. But it is distracting seeing things like that when it was the exact reason the series changed in the first place

    Perhaps it's because English isn't my first language, but I've always preferred the American localization to Nintendo games to the more drab European ones. Removing DJ Octavios music references in Splatoon or adding the word "Bros." to the title of Mario & Luigi games (ruining perfectly good puns in the process) is among their biggest sins.

      @@CloudConnection hey I’ll take it! I’ve seen a lot of reviews, but normally they’re just annoying and don’t actually review it. I normally enjoy your videos on games, and agree with them. And hopefully you’ll talk about how great the mini game with the eggs and stuff is! I loved that mode as a kid with friends.

    You just keep coming out with hit after hit, great work man! However, I would appreciate transition screens so that I know which section the video is on. Sometimes I got confused because I just didn't realize that it had switched to the next part.

    • @CloudConnection
      @CloudConnection  2 года назад +3

      I'm actually experimenting with that for the next video. My thought process up to now was to have it be one long stream, but I do think splitting them up into clearly-defined parts makes the most sense going forward.

    How i think the perfect paper mario game should go: the world dinamic (individual unique npcs)/number of partners as the first, the combat of thosand year door, a story on par with super paper mario, and world look of sticker star/color splash/ origami king, as well as the humor of those games.

    I think the paint mechanic would have worked better if you had to choose which paint color to use. It wouldn't be that much more challenging and would be easy to overcome through trial and error but you would be rewarded with the time you save by getting the right color. Having 3-6 colors to choose from would make painting less monotonous and more engaging

    I really REALLY wish Paper Mario would do away with turn-based battles if there's no XP-system of actual-worth. At that point, it's just wasting time.
    Good art-style, writing, and music aside; this is a video game, not a movie

  • @strain42
    @strain42 2 года назад +3

    It's interesting to me how like many Paper Mario fans I found myself wishing the series would return to turn based RPGs like the first two titles, and yet with Color Splash, I genuinely think the turn based RPG aspect of it is the worst part.
    I think if they'd removed the turn based battles entirely, and doubled down on their efforts to make the Paper Mario series more of (essentially) a point and click adventure series by bringing back party members with overworld functions that could be used to solve puzzles, Color Splash could have theoretically been my favorite game in the entire series.
    As it stands now, I basically see it as the perfect middle point in the series. I like it more than Super, Paper Jam (which yes, I'm counting), and Sticker Star, but not quite as much as Origami King, Thousand Year Door, and 64.
    But yes, if Origami King somehow ends up being the absolute last Paper Mario game ever made, the series went out on a good note, and I'm super excited to see what you have to say about it when the time comes.

    • @mlpfanboy1701
      @mlpfanboy1701 3 месяца назад

      The problem with the turn based rpg of color splash is there is really no point to do it. In thosand year door and original you can level up allowing you to potentially live longer or do more things, this game doesn’t do that. Not to mention the partners allowed better fighting strategies and the best part was they dont cost in game money to get them or a ton of time to activate there abilities.

    I enjoy the Paper Mario Games overall but sometimes they tend to add too many mechanics within battles, call me traditional but I just want to fight the baddies and not worry about extra mechanics.

    When I first started playing this game I really liked it, but only got two big paint stars before Smash Ultimate came out. This combined with a bunch of other games left Color Splash on my backlog for over four years!! Finally came back to it in 2023 and loved it so much that I 100% completed the whole thing. All paint splotches, all plaza banners/flags, and all museum cards. In my opinion, this is the best game in the series to date (although I’ve not yet played Origami King), and it’s woefully under appreciated.

    Fantastic video. Origami King is even more complicated to discuss and it's disappointing that so few people use the nuance required to do so. It is neither amazing nor awful. Where it lacks in gameplay or progression it absolutely shines in story and presentation. Looking forward to your take, really enjoyed your breakdown of Color Splash here.

    been a while since i visited your channel, glad to see you have grown! never played anything after super paper mario myself. although i might consider giving origami king a try at some point, i am still just flabbergasted by sticker star and color splash, as i think most fans are. after the masterpiece that was TTYD, i just could never understand why they committed to such a bland vision for PM. anyway, merry christmas.

    I for one love color splash. Almost all the locations in the game have something interesting in them that make them memorable. The music is amazing and this is the only game where I am actually OK with fighting the koopalings because they actually have a personality this time. Not to mention it is the funniest paper Mario game. I do wish not all the characters for toads and I do wish they showed it’s at abrasional designs but I can live with them looking generic. I love everything about this game…… except the battle system. The battle system in this game is not good and having to use a Specific thing card to be almost all the bosses in the game is really annoying. And I think I speak for almost everyone when I say color splash (and origami king) would be 10 times better if it didn’t have a battle system and all the enemies were just overworld enemies (although I do actually really like the boss fights and origami king). But in the end I still love this game. I do wish the story was a little more interesting but in the end there’s nothing really wrong with the story so it’s fine (except for the part where everyone chooses to ignore that Bowser is possessed. I hate that so much). The sad thing is most people never even played this game which is why I’m sad I didn’t come out on switch word actually would’ve had a fair shot

    Personally I like the game and the humor landed 80% of the time for me.
    There are aspects to dislike about it but people who hate on this game don't really know what a truly "bad game" is.

    I agree with your assessment of the best looking Paper Mario game to date. I would also say I think this the best Paper Mario soundtrack to date, for both covering a wide array of genres and using 29 different instruments (according to the game credits). I felt like the battle sequence was tedious, although it fixed many errors of Sticker Star. I also thought the story was too dragged out, especially that first big paint star. While Hugh had a better personality than Kersti, he is somewhere between just useless and even more useless than Kersti. Overall, my opinion reflects what so many have already said. Color Splash is an improved Sticker. It's not a good Sticker, it's not a bad Sticker Star, it's just an improved sticker star.
    I just reached Princess Peach's Castle in Origami King this past Saturday. I should finish it some time this week. Can't wait to see what you have to say for Oragami King!

  • @geodaet83

    Well Paper Mario was never a real RPG and never meant to be one. They just wanted to do some weird experimental stuff.
    So I don't really get why people are so upset that they continued to experiment with different battle styles. Except for sticker star since that game just wasn't fun or well thought out. But color splash was real fun, though the battles admittedly were just OK and this roshambo was pretty stupid. But everything else, to me, was pretty creative and just simple fun.
