I'll say this again. You can SEE Ezio's development even in animations. When he kills Uberto, notice how his blade is used like a knife, very brutally, and by the end of the game, he assassinates the people with it like telling a whisper to their ear.

I have played this game 9 times, filling every save file on every console I’ve ever played it on, I memorized the locations of every feather and chest, delved into the secrets of 16, thought I had seen EVERYTHING. On my 10th play through of it on the remaster I learned that Desmond actually sees the subtitles we see. So the game with subtitles on is the canonical way to play. He also sees the game in third person, which is neat
That just sounds trippy
Late reply I know but I just came across this video series and am delving in and enjoying it.
The idea of Desmond seeing the subtitles *and* controlling in third person makes a lot of sense, especially if you consider the mechanical explanations at the beginning of AC1. Like yes, those explanations are directly to the player. But they're also to Desmond. He's laying on a flat surface, looking up at a screen in AC1. It makes sense that in order to look around and "control" thing, there would have to be some sort of physical interface that we're not seeing. The puppeteer system being in third person even for Desmond makes complete sense from that perspective. He's able to see his ancestors memories in a way they never could, but given they have an additional sense in the form of Eagle Vision, everything he's seeing is built out of things they would've had to be aware of.
It's genuinely a sick piece of what makes the older AC games, and something I feel we lost with the move away from the modern day story.
@@heyyitsultima I wouldn't say it makes sense for it to be 3rd person purely due to the fact that the way they describe it half the time is as if he's just sharing a body and had to give over control as shown by the books. It's odd to say the least. I know that it's supposed to make the game more immersive but it feels weird they'd retcon something as simple as how the regular animus works.
I believe the soundtracks played a huge part in developing the atmosphere and emotions of the game...
The feeling I got when I played this game for the first time was something I never felt before, back in those days.

AC2 feels crafted, Odyssey feels manufactured
Got to say that compared to Breakpoint even Odyssey feels crafted and I hate that game beyond imagination.
As many of us I loved AC basically until the end of AC3.
I enjoyed Black Flag for gameplay which was was more polished than AC3. Yet I still believe naval was better in AC3. It felt harder and Aquilla felt it actually had weight... in terms of story. I know I will piss of many, but Edward was really shitty character. I did like him much more in the book.
The story was extremly wasted potential and basically without Desmond the game lost its identity.
As Patrice explained during ACII. AC was epic story of a guy in a prison (Desmond).... and they killed him off.
Desmond was the link between the past and the future. Everything that happend in the animus was then progressing the modern story and I was always hungry to see more.
I will also get hate for saying that I loved Unity for gameplay. It had harder combat, but it was still dueling between characters so the animations of combat were mindblowing. Open assassination mission structure was extremly needed for AC. Etc etc...
But the overall story simply does not work anymore without Desmond.
I am not going to buy next AC title. I dont care if Ashraf will do it. There is litteraly zero interest from my side because there is nothing they can really bring to the table.
Unisift is worse than EA and they will no longer produce a good game.
I will watch the story for sure and the trailers. The hardcore fan inside me wont allow me to skip the story. If I am wrong and they really release a great AC game I could buy it in the end. But I want teusted reviews first. I dont trust Ubisoft anymore :(
Miroslav Sevcik Edward was a shitty character in your opinion. He’s one of my favorites

I've loved AC2 but man Odyssey for me was soooo good. I really enjoyed it
@@SuperBlackcesar Yeah, i enjoyed it too, but i want to be realistic, i enjoyed it because it was, as a game, Origins in steroids, throwing away to fuck all the other things that made Origins great and special: Narrative, strong and caring with the game identity, world inmersion, historically faithful, accurate and sentimental, all that made me feel hopeful for a new reborn of the franchise. It is a good game, but a terrible, insulting and catastrophic Assassin's Creed
I loved this, would love a retrospective on AC1 at some point.
I think Brotherhood and Revelations deserve a video like this too. Maybe even AC3 as well because I think that game is underrated despite what they did to Desmond which I hated btw.
Assassins creed 1 wasn't all that good tbh. For me it just has tons of nostalgia because it was my first game on ps3

@@apomtaylor8054 I was 21 when this game came out. I feel old now haha. Graphically it was amazing for it's time, the gameplay very repetitive tho.
AC1 was good. Running and climbing felt nice, combat was meh - like allways. But the atmosphere, my god. Hands down the best of all. I loved that medival setting, that felt quite real. It looked so damn good and honestly, no title ever came close to that again.
However the missions... Yeah. All the same shit over and over and over again. Allways the same. With great story telling in there sure, but so repetative.
Also the "Overworld" between the cities is useless (what a wasted potential). And the collectibles were a joke. 420(!!!!) god damn Flags, that were utterly useless except for a dumb acchievement or something.
I still like to play it. Just for the ambience, it truly is that good in that regard. If just the missions weren't as repetative, it would have been true masterpiece.

Ahhhhhhhh 😔 I’m so happy I got to experience the original/early Assassin Creed games, concepts, ideas, worlds and characters. However, it also makes me super depressed to think about how good it used to be, and also how much better recent games could have been. They had everything to build upon, the perfect foundations, sadly a steady decline post Patrice. I still consider the Assassin Creed games the biggest waste of potential I’ve ever experienced in gaming, and possibly entertainment in general. Great video as always!
MIKEE big facts my guy. Hopefully the devs listened to fans response to AC Odyssey.
Wyo the series has barely any hope left ever since Odyssey existed so AC is doomed
Wyo it aont change a damn thing because the story is already fucked, the fucked the lore up and only by retconing the whole of post AC 3 stuff and the movie will they be able to fix stuff. Acctually AC 4 and Unity havent done as nuch damage as the rest, but odyssey completely destroyed the lore at its core and there is no way of fixing it anymore. The ezio games give me some type of feeling I can’t even explain, it’s like this sense of nostalgia+sadness+appreciation that I can’t even explain. Truly incredible games.
When I was 10 years old I got a ps3 as a gift and right the next day, I visited my local game store and bought 2 games, one of which was ac2. I knew that it was a game where you "do parkour and kill people" and to a 10yo kid that was more than enough, but when I played it, I instantly got hooked, I just totally fell in love with it. Now bear in mind that english is not my 1st language, and although I've been exposed to some of it since I was, like, 5, I still couldn't possibly comprehend the narrative structure and the overall story of this masterpiece. I, understanding only bits and pieces here and there, still quickly grew fond of Ezio and loved the progression of the story. I've always really liked La Volpe and Bartolomeo, or running around in Firenze and Venice (and also fuck Forli) and the tombs were GOLD. I've finished this game like 12 times when I got it, and after that I just had to get brotherhood, which was already out I think, I was 10 in 2011. Of course, having the game start immediately after this one and bring so much to the table, I was impressed... now I even understood more of the story as my english got a bit better. Same thing happened with Revelations and I was so hyped for the release of AC3 and then I loved that game too. Same thing happened with AC4 and so on and so forth, until after syndicate, I've noticed how the franchise has actually been regressing, dying and distancing itself from what it used to be. I hesitated to try Origins for the longest time, I've only played it in like, april this year and I loved it a whole lot, but even then, the AC feeling was not entirely there. I did feel like some parts fit and how well they were integrated, but it was not the same as playing the 1st ac games. Then, I tried Odyssey, just so I could say that I've played every AAA Assassin's Creed game ever, and I hated absolutely everything about it. Needless to say, I love this franchise with all of my heat. This year, for my 18th birthday, I wanted something special as a gift. something big, that I will take with me to the grave and so I got a tattoo of the Brotherhood's insignia, to show what the series means to me and how important it is for me, and it all started with this great game.... I've also bought the Ezio collection this year and I'm currently in the cappedocia sequence in Revelations, reliving all the nostalgia and playing the games that actually made you feel like a proper part of the world, of the brotherhood, and I cried multiple times.... Excellent video mate. All your takes resonate with me especially how much odyssey sucks
Yeah.... No. The first two games have amazing plots but literally every single one afterwards is shit.
@@wiwysovaBro what? Brotherhood was fantastic and Assassin's Creed 1 barely even had a plot. The entire "plot" of that game is something that took Ezio like half an hour to do near the end of AC2, that's how weak that shit was
I wouldn't even diss Revelations story either. Its one of the best in the series.@@wiwysova
The writing in this game was garbage and generic AF
Omg... I was 14 when this game came out and I still remember every single day I spent playing this. It's an experience I'll never forget
Literally finished AC2 for the first time like a minute ago. This video somehow gave me some chills.
That opening montage you made was one of the coolest edits that had me smiling the entire time.
This story, music, characters, world was like playing a form of art. I’ve recently replayed the Ezio collection on the Nintendo switch and now being 24 and revisiting this series made me feel like a kid again. This is the Ubisoft that I miss
Glad to hear it!
@@LazerzZ honestly didn't expect you to reply on a video that would now be considered "old" you really are a real one ❤️
It's almost disheartening to hear these words and then look at what they did of the series. I enjoyed every moment of this video. Thank you!
literally just started playing ac2 and wow it is amazing even though its 11 years old now
As an Italian native speaker, I am simultaneously appalled and amused (but mostly amused) at how bad the Italian accent and the untranslated Italian dialogue are. It's hilarious.
La voce di Ezio la preferisco a quella Italiana comunque sia
Sì non capisco perché non hanno tenuto tutto in inglese. Così non ne capisco il senso, è un italiano abbozzato
Peter Parker bon journe
Ah shit wrong language
@@MoonlightShield c'è qualcosa di bizzarramente fascinoso nel parlare un misto di italiano e inglese con quel timbro di voce da uomo vissuto e assertivo
Never related to someone so much, I also always change my clothing colour to white and red, I also absolutely despise the prisoner release mission from Hugo😂😂
My cousin introduced me to ac series when I was a kid... He passed away last year... Old ac games remind me of him as we played and used to talk abt it a lot...
I’m so so sorry about that, I hope this video could bring back some fond memories. 💚
@@LazerzZ it did... Thanks alot
I miss the atmosphere of Assassin's creed 2.
This is a very good review. I don’t think I’ve watched a RUclips video for an hour ever before. Your reviews are truly amazing
Thank you so much!
Ezio’s dialogue gives me chills to this day. Well written, well delivered... raw and emotional, even when uttering matured wisdom.
im replaying ac2 as we speak. its absolutely stills holds up today. when i picked up the controller it was like i never stop playing the game. i havent played ac2 in maybe 7 or 8 years. CAN WE TALK ABOUT ABOUT HOW THIS TITLE DROP IS THE BEST AC TITLE IM THE SERIES.
Bro I got literal goosebumps at 11:29 when the logo popped up. Brought me back to the first time I saw that
Omgosh, this still puts chills up and down my arms, I loved and still love this trilogy...I wish they could have built on this...it had meaning...they should have kept the story going....I can’t say how much I miss it...
Man...I remember seeing the first trailer for this. One of the most badass ones I have ever seen. Truly memorable.
13:42
Nice tidbit of NPC behaviour here. Wish it appeared more in other AC games as well...
First time Minerva talk to desmond/you the player it send chills down my spine.
I just finished replaying it, and man I forgot how much of a hilarious power move it was to end the game on minerva looking into the camera and going 'the rest is up to you desmond' and desmond saying 'what the fuck???' and that's it!
The speech from Ezio after killing Savonarola is great but the people still decided to follow others, because they want to serve, they don't want to be responsible, because the responsibility is too great. Remember that.
And of course, may the Father of Understanding guide you.
Thanks for making me replay the ezio collection again great vid though
Gotta love the hour long videos. Literally could watch these all day long
59:42 This is such a smart way to do supernatural elements. Of course it'd be weird, eerie, confusing, open to interpretation, opaque, scary, awesome...you'd never be the same again. So few fictional stories even TRY to capture that ambiguity.
Watching makes me realize that Ghost of Tsushima's opening was so reminiscent of Assassin's Creed II; the music, the placement of the title, and the scenery. It just draws you in and convince you that yes, you're in for a ride.
MAKE AC GREAT AGAIN!
#NoMoreOdysseys
@Jimb0 Yeah, I would like them to pick history and really delve into it not just do it because it's a 'cool time period'.
Include Valhalla. I feel no AC energy from that.
Jimb0 i still think darby knows what he’s going to do with that game...even if vikings are the contrary to assassins.
Well, there will be more Odysseys after the last hope of Assassin’s Creed just left
@@jackwilkins7972 at least it will be better than oddyesey
I was 19 when this came out iv played this one so many many times. I can play it blindfolded. Great video keep up the good work. Here's to another 10 years. 🍻
Due to the fact that we cannot change to present... I would love to find some people who would like to continue AC how it should have been and create a new franchise fulfilling its potential. Bc Ubisoft won't change I fear....
Therefore if anyone like-minded is interested - I am currently finishing my IT-studies, learning game development in my free time and would love to build something like this over the upcoming decade.
@@takaincur8079 hmm...
@@jacovanbeek8807 that's a ... Maybe?
@@takaincur8079 ive actually dreamt about not only a back to basics AC game, but one that improves on the older features like parkour, combat, etc. Should i continue? And yes if i had the opportunity, id love to bring the franchise back to its roots!
@@jacovanbeek8807 I totally agree. AC1 was due to its lore amazing but it had plenty features that weren't extended.
Would really love to do this and maybe we could someday find a few more people to join and realize it.
A little bummer could be the issue of licensing. We would have to abstract AC as much as possible from the original games to not run into any legal issues.
Like Temtem is to Pokemon
It’s so nice to listen to someone who loves this series as much as I do....with the Ezio trilogy always close to my heart...yes I’ve played other games but none have meant more than this series.....thx for this great video...☮️
The title screen of AC 2 is unbeatable. It is a good life we lead brother🖤
How much I miss this style. Sure it could get repetitive but it was truly assassins creed
This is the game that made me fall in love with the series. One of my favorite games of all time no doubt
Can you do a video like this of Brotherhood and Revelations ?
Really enjoyed this one
Yeah, Brotherhood and Revelations next!
The Brotherhood video is out, but the Revelations one won't be till next year, for the 10 year anniversary of its release.
I think Assassin's Creed always struggled with conveying time.
It never feels like years have passed, but rather just weeks. I was so surprised when he said it has been 10 years since his family's death the first time I played it. The same with all the other games.
I swear I go back to play the AC games like every couple of years just because it reminds me of a time where somehow one game series was enough, like literally nothing else was close to capturing this much of my attention at the time
Loved this! Can't wait for the Assassin's Creed Brotherhood Retrospective
I can’t wait to make it!
@@LazerzZ It was excellent. I can't wait for the one on Revelations!
Damn dude... I just found this absolute gem of a video. You did an amazing job and clearly put a lot of work into this so thank you! I remember when this game came out... I would’ve been about 13 or 14. I had been playing AC1 the entire time leading up to the release man. All my friends played it once or twice and got bored with it and didn’t understand why I kept playing it over & over again. I when AC2 came out I did the exact same thing. But now I had two of them to play over and over again. And I did the same with brotherhood. Haha it was so awesome just like reading a an awesome trilogy of novels over & over! Fucking love the original theme of assassins creed. They should never have given it away and always kept us mystified. Honestly I can’t even play the new ones like odessy & ... the Roman one that I can’t even remember the name of currently lol.
I am definitely interested in Valhalla though as it seems they’re trying to learn from their mistakes and innovate instead of otherwise. Like no more magic power ffs lol or fighting medusa 🙄 like cmon lol. I really hope they don’t disappoint with Valhalla. Maybe give us a new modern day protagonist or find some way to put a really interesting spin on that and create a new trilogy of games. I think would be the absolute fucking bomb honestly. I’d probably be locked in my room for weeks playing it lol.
so..how was it
What did you think of Valhalla lol
One hell of a video. This hit me with all the nostalgia and feels I had when I first played this ten years ago. Amazing job!
Watching this as a sequel to the AC 1 analysis, the intro feels perfectly with the ending of that review, despite being done years later.
I'd love to say I did that on purpose but it's more of a happy accident 😅
41:28 I have never missed this prompt so I always assumed that missing it would cause a desync. But to see that Rodrigo stops them if you do miss it is so cool. Kind of honorable of him to dismiss them to fight Ezio fair, just like him deciding to accept Ezio’s fistfight challenge at the end.
James you're content has been so high quality this year
Thanks for making this great video on a game we all love
I grew up with the tail end of the Ezio trilogy, yet I was still just old enough to understand the broad strokes. Now though Ezio's story is much deeper, and I now understand the more adult themes. The Ezio trilogy like many other games of that era will always have a place in my heart.
All the best protagonists all are in sync with their locations... Ezio, Edward, Bayek
I got CHILLS listening to that intro/montage/mashup of ezio speaking. The memories...
"It is a good life we live brother" brought tears in my eyes
