- This episode of Sexplanations presents a version of history written by Dr. Doe and Blake Bonkowski. It is not comprehensive or cross-cultural but it does touch on many of the documented events and experiences which influenced how we got to 2018. My hope is that we create a history with more visibility, awareness, and advocacy; less discrimination, hatred, and violence. I hope we all stay curious about the millions of other voices and timelines contributing to trans history.

1. I dig how much you focused specifically on Johnson and Riviera
2. I'm disappointed by how western this framing of trans identity is. There are tons of indigenous conceptualizations of gender that dont fit a binary mold that go back ten thousand years. Our history didn't start with a white man in a lab.

To my understanding, the first known writing is from Iraq, from the fourth millennium BCE. And the only writing in the Americas before the Europeans invaded is from Mexico and Central America. History is only known through writing. So how does trans history go back 10,000 years?
Renegade Mannequin so "history", as in the academic, white, western model of history, takes two major forms of evidence into account -- written, but also cultural -- through evidence in language structure, clothing and other material culture, religious traditions -- so history goes waaaay farther back than writing. Specifically when I say 10,000 years in reference to my own people, the it's meant to mean, "since time immemorial." Mi'kmaw people have lived in our territory for 13,000 years, according to archeological evidence, to be more exact, and trans identities have existed within our culture as long as our culture has existed (as well as many others around the world). The universal acceptance of a gender binary is a symptom of worldwide colonization.
It's a 7min video. Your comment is as vapid as every other one like it that tries to shift the focus from "why didn't you mention this, or that, or a hundred other things" instead of lauding it solely for WHAT IT IS: an introduction.
You're basically interrupting the 1st grade math teacher and acting like a snob that they're not talking about calculus or LaPlace transformations.

We just finished a symposium at UC Irvine law school about trans communities and it was a wonderful experience. I wish our guest timeline would have allowed more people to come, but we had the first transgender judge to hold a school teaching position, and transgender and HIV rights lawyers from back in the day. It was a wonderful event and I was so blessed to be a part of putting it together. I wish there was a good place to spread the word about all these amazing people using the Law to help trans, non binary and other LGBTQ+ communities.

I love this video so much, and I think stuff like this is so important because so many people try to invalidate trans and nb people by saying it's a new thing or a "modern fad" or whatever, when in reality trans and gnc people have been around for ages. Increasing visibility and sharing that truth are vital to raising awareness and inspiring more acceptance, and it's great to have a short but solid overview of the western history of trans people in one easy to share video.

For patriotic reasons I want people to know about Georgina Beyer, who I believe was the first openly trans mayor (of the small farming town of Carterton) and the first openly trans member of a national legislature. I massively respect her. 🇳🇿
Massive respect also to Christian Schenk, who was elected to the German Bundestag in 1990 and came out as trans in (I think) 2002.
O: I had no idea we had such a long history. Also lol at the "and this person came up with this word" for those super long German words. That made me giggle
That's the thing that (probably due to so many of the science being destroyed due to national socialism in Germany) irks me out when people now tend to want to shout "What's happening the past couple of years?" and I'm feeling like "Well, it's not like we popped up a couple of years a go...?"
As for the German language: It has this habit of combining words :P. As a Dutch person they are not overly complicated to read and hear, but there are more extreme examples :P.
Don't forget the technology used to make our smartphones, broadband systems, tablets, and gaming consoles was co-created by a trans woman named Sophie Wilson.
Halfway through this video, I started crying. As a transman whose been fully medically transitioned for the majority of his life, I haven't felt this strong of an emotional reaction in years. Wow, cool I can still cry. But also.. to see the history of people like me existing for centuries really put things into perspective. I had never thought this type of history survived, let alone existed. Deep down, the shame inherited through being transsexual will never leave. But seeing gives me hope for future and that every person, no matter who the hell they are, can live authentically. And bring prosperity, joy, contentment to life, in one where any combination of those things are deemed unreachable. The suicide rates are still too damn high, but I hope this video will help educate others so that people who suffer from gender dysphoria don't have to turn to death as the only escape from this living hell we were born into.
So thank you for making a grown man cry..

This video made my cry... tears of joy.
To think how far we have come in only a few short years. I proudly wear the trans-pride alongside the rainbow flag on my jacket. We might have a bit farther to go, and it takes time for people to learn, understand, and accept people that differs from them. But just think about what life for trans people used to look like, and look at it today! teenagers gets access to hormone-blockers if they want it (not everywhere, but in several countries), in some countries you have a third gender as an option for your papers and passport, people are starting to realise that your identity isn't dependant on what you have between your legs and on the inside of your body, but what's in your brain.

Even with the video description acknowledging that this isn't comprehensive or cross-cultural, this video is still the MOST comprehensive piece of easily-accessible trans history that I've seen all in one place. Often, a person has to go through a bunch of blogs, videos, and articles to even get THIS much. Thank you for making this video. It's a good primer, a better jumping off point to more information than I've typically encountered. And I didn't know a chunk of this stuff, myself!

Thanks for the roundup. It's unfortunately well needed to remind people that this is not a new thing and definitely not a trend, rather that the visibility is needed for a lot of people to find the confidence to speak up. It doesn't suddenly makes more people trans, it just makes more people willing to speak up about it and not suck it up (and get depressions from it, let aside being suicidal).

Love this! My daughter is transgender and we are now fighting 21 anti transgender bills that North Dakota is introducing now, 2023. Many are fighting these bills. Equality for all, anything less is not equal or ok!

Dr. Doe can you make videos on a number of topics I'd like to suggest? This is a list of anatomy videos that are not related to sexual intercourse, but they should be part of a sexual education, and as such I hope you will cover them.
This is the list of videos I would hope you try to cover:
1. Sexual differentiation. This would include the following anatomical structures: bipotential gonads, wolffian ducts, mullerian ducts, and cloaca. The video would also explain how these structures develop into male and female reproductive structures.
2. Puberty and secondary sex characteristics. This video would explain what puberty is, what secondary sex characteristics are, and how things develop. It would focus on explaining that hormonal changes come first in puberty. It would then cover the Tanner scale, and it should be sure to explain that the Tanner scale is a general guide and that everyone goes through puberty a bit differently.
3. Disorders of sexual development (DSDs). This video would be best if made after the first two videos on sexual differentiation and puberty. The video would include: an explanation of what intersexes are, an explanation of ambiguous genitalia, and briefly explained examples of some DSDs. Such examples could be: congenital adrenal hyperplasia (CAH), androgen insensitivity syndrome (AIS), Klinefelter syndrome, and Turner syndrome.
4. Central precocious puberty (CPP). This video would be best if made after the first two videos on sexual differentiation and puberty. The video would explain what CPP is, and cover some of the causes of it. The video can also cover the story of Lina Medina; the youngest female to give birth in current medical history.
5. Delayed puberty. This video would be best if made after the first two videos on sexual differentiation and puberty. The video would explain what delayed puberty is, and cover some causes of it. The video could also cover how lateness, discordance (i.e. steps of puberty happening out of order), and disorders like malnutrition can also be signs of delayed puberty being caused by an abnormality.
6. Pregnancy. This video would focus on the processes that occur after implantation of the zygote into the uterine wall. The video should focus on explaining what generally happens in the 3 trimesters. The video should also briefly mention things like nausea gravidarum (morning sickness), hyperemesis gravidarum, linea nigra, melasma, and nesting instinct.
7. Parturition. This video should focus on the process of childbirth. It should cover how it begins, the stages of birth, Caesarean section, and briefly mention some complications such as pre-term delivery, malpresentations, and episiotomy.
Thanks if you read the whole thing. I hope I didn't overwhelm you with all of the suggestions.
I have spent time learning trans history in order to be the best trans ally I can (I am a cis-gender, bisexual woman), but shockingly, I have yet to find a quick but thorough summary I can pass along to friends who want to begin learning about the subject (obviously, there is great material out there, but most of it is pretty in depth or is brief but assumes the reader is already familiar with the people/terms). Thank you so much for creating the perfect overview to pass along to get people started!!! As with all of your videos, this is amazing. Thanks

This is an excellent video on modern trans history :) Was hoping for some ancient history though. Like the Roman Empress Elagabalus (c. 204 - 11 March 222). Or the 2,500 year old trans woman warrior, archaeologists found in Siberia in 1990.
If a video on ancient trans history were made, it would offer validation and confirmation to trans people. As well as educating people that we are not a trend or some new occurrence

This episode, channel, and podcast make my heart swell with pride. 1) I feel like I am learning so much more than my failed sex education in Arizona. 2) Is there an episode on any platform that discuss other social norms like the Berdache American and Canadian Indians? I feel it might do well to have a parallel to our own culture in how it's changing. 3) I would love to see you in Portland Oregon. We have a huge diverse community and we like to keep it weird. I had no idea that the research on this went so far back. Thank you for enlightening myself and so many others. It is far past time that we treat everyone equally and in a humane way regardless of what is under their clothing, how they feel about those parts, or what they choose to do with them.

Dr. Doe, What resources do you recommend for learning about the potential risks and benefits of puberty blockers?
I transitioned back in 2000; it's been a heck of a ride since then here in Australia. There is still a lot to be done but the amount of changes over the last 20 years alone has made transgender health so much more accessible. However, the statistics for suicide are still terrifying, and there is a lot of work to be done there. I consider myself extremely fortunate to be living in this time; if I had been born even 10 years earlier (was born in the mid-70s) I don't think I would have survived transitioning.
+Yuki Fox I was born in the 1940s and had surgery in the 1970s and most all of us survived. In some ways it was easier but finding resources was harder back then.

Hi Dr. Doe - Great video! Just a little feedback, the video was very Euro-centric. I would have loved to see greater acknowledgement of two-spirit people and the Indigenous nations that have long held these folks as centrally important. That is part of trans history too, it just isn't white.
Thanks for the reply Blake! That is definitely true, and two-spirit itself as a term is a modern identifier and how people identify has varied across nations for centuries, so even the term itself doesn't completely capture the complexity. I just always want to make sure that we aren't erasing indigenous peoples from our history, and I always hope to see acknowledgement that "history" doesn't mean something a white person wrote down.
I had no idea but was keen to learn just how far back these nuances of identity and sexuality go. This as illuminated my mind, and I am again humbled to realize just how much interesting variety exists. My thoughts:
It could be said that three themes emerge when certain fixed notions of reality such as gender stereotypes, identity, or sexuality norms are challenged, (1) suppression, oppression, and condemnation, (2) tolerance, protest, and change, (3) learning, understanding, and new evidence. These themes intertwine and wrestle producing an outcome, inevitably concluding with degrees of acceptance and recognition, its just unfortunate that achieving this requires sacrifice and challenge. As it turns out the vast variety of races, ethnicities, sexual orientations, and gender identities have always been apparent throughout human history but unfortunately not socially accepted or appropriate due to a severe loss of critical thinking, and proper inquiry into these nuances, that is to say, that human beings are not logical creatures, and the abhorrent response by the "closed minded" individuals and groups which perpetuated the suppression of the existence of such variety, rhetorized onto public thought that the existence of such variety is unacceptable, which can only be applicable to the vast battle with our own bias / prejudice, dissonance, arrogance, and ignorance. Normal is certainly a myth, a word that has very little utility, because it presupposes that their is a set way of thinking, behaving which is fixed, which simply isn't real.
History is written by the winners, but history is equally challenged and changed by the participants. To my fellow humans whatever your nuances, I want to learn and embrace them all. In critical thought, and co-operation toward a more viable future for us all.

Iim an aro-bi genderneutral (maybe trans male? i don't know, sometimes i feel more male but that's not the point) and it feels so amazing to know how much has changed considering trans/nonbinary rights. it's kind of hilarious to me how trans people have been here for...more than 50 years, and yet people treat it like something that started happening a few years ago.
Hey women have been around for a lot longer. You are here because of a woman's body, let us a least have some say in the matter. 50 years, I am a 60 year old woman so shut up.
Could you do a video or at least fill me in on trans children? I find myself getting into arguments online (mostly on 4chan) when someone says something along the lines of "If children can't consent to sex, how can they consent to HRT?" and I never know how to respond. Could you please shed some light on this argument?
Children don't usually get HRT, they get puberty blockers. Then, once they are old enough, they can start HRT after working out how they want their body to change.
Not going on hormone blockers means irreversible changes in the kids bodies once they go through puberty. HRT is not a decision you can just postpone like that.
I have given out 100s of this book: The Transgender Child: A Handbook for Families and Professionals. It answers all the questions.
Its important to remember that around 80% of children will not go through with a gender transition. That is, of all the children who claim to be transgender at a young age, 80% of them will change their mind and remain the gender of their birth.
Thats a much bigger issue.
tubester4567 I don't think there is any need to weigh one issue against another and decide which one is the bigger one. Also, one doesn't “claim“ to be transgender - that's just who that kid is at that time. Just because they later on might not go through a transition process and maybe identify with the gender they were assigned, doesn't invalidate their identies when they were younger. All that being said, yes these studies exist, but pls keep in mind that that there are also tons of trans adults who were not identified as being trans as kids but who wish they had been and could have gotten the help they needed but those people are not taken into account in those studies. Also, these statistics should never serve to invalidate trans kids and their experiences and needs - they shouldn't have to have to convince you or anyone else that they will be trans until the end of time before your respect them for who they are right now. And always keep in mind, that trans people are a volunerable group in this society - I'm sure you know about the mental health statistics. And you know what would benefit everyone who ever questioned their gender, identified as trans oder is trans? Being genuinely curious about who they are and making space for them as a whole person, including (but not limited to) all their “gender feels“. This includes who they feel the are at “their core“ just as much as who the think other people want them to be and how they struggle as a consequence. That's were real trans (health) care would begin - when people can feel save enough to bring all they are and feel to the table and say “So that's all my complicated gender mess: There are things I know for sure about myself, but can't express yet. There are things I haven't figured out yet, but people pressure me to give them all the answers all the time and I'm overwhelmed by all their questions. There are also all these in-between and fluidity things and I don't know how to make anyone understand those parts. And then there is also what people think I represent but I don't and it makes me cringe all the time. Oh and there is also funny bathroom story I gotta tell you about later! So, erm, can you help me figure it out a little more?“
With everything happening now we need to remember our history to prevent it from repeating.
