    As a game dev can i offer a basic game design change. Rock throwing should train rock throwing not basic hunting. The reason being is that rock throwing has more use than just hunting. I would instead have jobs/tasks (in this case hunting) as a container of required skills. e.g rock throwing (later spear throwing or bow shooting) and other skills like tracking and stealth etc
    Great vid, awesome project. best of luck.

    • @jskthefork
      @jskthefork 5 лет назад +11

      I agree. I think it'd be cool if that sort of 'throwing' specialization could add a multiplier to later tech skills (slings, spears, bows). I'd figure that could urge players to further pursue specializations, in this example it'd be a figurative "ranged combat specialist".

    • @RialuCaos
      @RialuCaos 5 лет назад +6

      "Rock throwing" seems a bit too specific, but I agree that it does need more specificity. Rock throwing should be "throwing missiles" or "ranged combat", which should be a subset of hunting and/or combat.

    • @BlakeGillman
      @BlakeGillman 5 лет назад +2

      I think that's a bit specific. There has to be a fine balance between our normal preception of logic and user-friendly balancing and I think this is a very good middle ground.

    I mean rabbits would have been an option, pheasants.
    Making snares to catch rabbits etc.
    If you eventually want to go with a more historically accurate route or with just additional content.
    Rabbits could have warrens and various hunters could wait at each hole. Use fire to smoke them out etc.

    Hi there Dave. I am one of the guys who came after your videos got spread all over the RUclips and I instantly subscribed. All I wanted to say is, that if you find killing chickens too brutal and I guess, the bigger the hunted animal is, the more brutal it gets so maybe try to add fishing. I know they likely didn't have fishing rods at these times, but as a kid, my granddad has shown me how to fish from small rivers without any kind of tool or bait. All that was necessary was to watch for a while, find a spot where the water would sorta "undermine" the dirt or even stone from the shore sides. Then, if you come close to the river, the fish will likely hide under the overhanging piece of earth. And if you saw a little trout hide, you'd just crouch above and quickly reach under the overhanging piece of earth. It sounds really hard, but it is actually quite easy and often faster than normal fishing. Problem is you can only do it in rivers, no still water. Slightly long comment here... Great job so far. Can't wait for more :)

  • @amisner2k
    @amisner2k 5 лет назад +3

    I love your "cooperative" line-of sight system. The way they look at each other and kind of pause for a moment is really clever and unique. Really kinda does look like you're watching people work, because on a real job site you frequently see people standing and watching for brief moments before proceeding with some action.
    Your system is the first I've seen. Very well done mate. I like the way this thing of yours is heading. Cheers!

  • @johnler5706
    @johnler5706 5 лет назад +2

    First of all Congratulations Dave, you deserve all the support.
    Now as for a suggestion: So in the online mode, there will be servers. Whenever someone joins a server, he will have 4 (for example) sapiens and he will have to set up a civilization. The servers will be on 24/7 and when the players aren't online the sapens are going to just maintain their civilization and try to survive. In that way, there will be many civilizations by many different players in the server. If you add any war mechanics or trading mechanics, this will make the game even more competitive and players will be trying to compete with each other just like real civilizations in the old times. The servers can wipe monthly/weekly so civilizations don't get too overpowered and people will always get the chance to start again if their civilization was destroyed by another player. (This suggestion is like a mating between Rust and the Civilization Series but that's the feeling I get when watching your videos haha)
    I know that this idea seems pretty tough and I am sure it will need loads of coding but I see great potential in your game and if you actually make it competitive and unique enough it will surely be a huge success. Ofcourse you can just make it so people just make their civilizations and try to survive, but I am not sure how long people will be willing to play the game for and how boring it will be after playing it for a couple of days.
    You have done amazing job so far and I will keep watching your devblogs!
    Great Job Dave!

    • @shadda8472
      @shadda8472 5 лет назад

      I obviously don't know what his future plans on this game are, but I don't think he would want anything like weekly/monthly resets, which in return makes the kind of competitive server play pretty hard, as getting ahead once would mean others have lost, basically.
      In another video he talked about how much more stuff to do he wants to implement, so that your civilization can research new technology and get more advanced over time. That looks more like a long term game where you build up your own little world over the course of weeks.
      I really like the idea of some kind of war as you described it though, not sure how that could work without A) resets , B) feeling pointless and C) implementing some kind of no losses war system, which would feel not "real" enough for this game

    A great addition later on would be civilization growth via population and prosperity, allowing tribes to grow into villages to towns, and towns to cities, a technology tree or something of the sort to keep people interested and invested. Maybe a way to make paths from dirt, and upgrade those paths, possibly paths could generate with frequent travel of the sapiens, turning grass to dirt the now it's trampled on. I love this project and I'm glad that you're having such a growing audience! Cheers!

    Hey,
    It’s good to see another video from you !
    Here are my two cents on a few suggestions for the game right now:
    Content stuff:
    - Idea for the hunting process: Start with only running around and trying to grab to hunt, then they would learn “tools”. It would begin with throwing rocks; evolving to making a slingshot-type of weapon out of branches and peel from big logs; spear (maybe not for chicken)… then they could develop traps, and leave them for some time and chickens / other animals would end up there
    - As you did with “stone”, being the first tool, a branch / stick should also be the first tool. So, stick and rock. Eventually you would discover “rope” - with branches and peel from logs; and could connect them to make “axe”, “hammer”, “knife”…
    - Chopping down trees would not have happened in the beginning. They would need to tear down the bushes before that. Only after learning “axe”, would you be able to chop down a tree.
    - Also to notice, bigger animals (like boar>pig / deer) would not be hunted by stone, so players need to evolve in making new tools for hunting those bigger animals
    - Making fences, for some kind of enclosure on animals (sapiens should be able to direct animals by walking behind them or, in the chicken case, by grabbing them)
    - Action: grab
    - About chickens, they should start as aggressive animals in the wild, perhaps brown or black colored, that would bite back when grabbed. Only after you put them in a fence would they become tame. Eventually they would lay eggs.
    - Idea for random behavior in animals: once in a while, two of them would start fighting each other, like a small fight (not too frequent)
    - When sapiens breed, they should pass the learnt skills to their children
    - There should be good and bad berries, that would cause damage to the health. Also fruits in trees.
    - Eventually add fish to catch, first by hand, then by net (made out of ropes)
    Technical stuff:
    - I don’t know how hard it is to implement and fix, but it looks to me that a sapien passed through a tree at 8min 05secs
    - When zooming closer, the “action markers”, the axe currently, should be smaller and translucent. It would be of great help to navigate and understand the surroundings of that place. Perhaps these markers could be a little bit higher when zoomed in, not as close to the ground. Also when chopping trees, the symbol should be after the sapien (as if it was inside the three, still being visible and translucent) and not before it as it is now, occluding the view.
    Finally I just want to say a few words: you are becoming a legend. People are already wanting to help you make this. I don’t want anything in return, other people wouldn’t as well. But some might. Make sure to say, when you are approached for this kind of stuff, that the rights to this game are yours. Especially with models / animations for the game. Also, due to the sheer amount of people commenting here, perhaps get some way for people to write to you more professionally with ideas / feedback.
    Congratulations, and keep pushing and thriving!

    Maybe later down the line add some sort of social interactivity between the sapiens, where you can click on one person and have them interact with another.
    Special bonuses could be made from this, such as fater building time if two sapien friends are building together, slightly better hunting when together, etc.
    Perhaps when two opposite sex sapiens interact enough, they will be intimate enough to breed. The offspring will inheret some of the specialised skill progression from their parents.
    Just throwing ideas. But I believe adding some sort of social interaction between them can connect us to the game even more, since we no longer just see them as task robots.

    Absolutely love the concept of the game, and seeing it grow slowly is super interesting, especially hearing your thought process.
    Regarding the increase in brutality, I think, as you said, it's both necessary and beautiful in an odd way. You get to see the beauty of the natural world contrast with the ugliness needed for survival, and that's something not a lot of people get to see/know anymore with modern society.
    Will follow the development eagerly, best of luck Dave!

    I really like the new additions! One thing I would suggest though, is a toolbar-system, where you can select different tasks (e.g. hunt, chop trees, gather berries etc.) and then draw a rectangle to select trees for example or just click on one tree to mark it for chopping. Many other games in this genre have a similiar system :)

    I remember watching one of your devlogs 3 years ago and it's amazing how much has changed in your game.
    Also I'm feeling blockheads vibes with all the orders and commands you give to these sapiens. It feels like blockheads 3d or something :)

    What would be interesting is that later on down the line, you could add more tree varieties, and each one has different traits, like hard or soft wood, and each one would have pros and cons. Like the soft woods are more pliable and better for making baskets or whatever, but hard woods are better for housing and boats and last longer when used as firewood

    I just love how passionate you are about this game. That's why I subbed a couple of weeks ago. I also feel like you may just end up making them sentient one day lol. Oddly enough, when I watch your videos I feel like I'm watching the thought process of how god created Humans.

    Imagine this game as an mmo with an even bigger map with the same terrain as the real world.
    Where you start with nothing (stone age?) and work your way all the way up to space age.

    Chickens did exist back they just didn't live in plains. I'm pretty sure they were jungle birds.
    On a separate note, I really like those grass animations! They sooth my soul.

    My lord this game looks amazinnnnnnnngggg. I can't wait to play it! Suggestion: UI bar above the Sapiens that shows the completion of a task so you don't have to click on them to see.

    Keep up the frequent posts! If you want to take advantage of this exposure, I recommend you research how the RUclips algorithm works. Hopefully that could help garner further attention.
    My thoughts on the devblog: I agree with some of the comments regarding a "hunting tree", and sapiens could learn specific skills like rock throwing (then slings, spear throwing, and bow & arrows as tech progresses) and trapping. You could also use that to tease future hunting skills, like you're dangling a carrot in front of the player to motivate them. Also with harvesting meat, sapiens with a better hunting or harvesting skill could allows them to harvest more meat per animal. This could help with potential resources scarcity along with the making hunting feeling less grindy (as you'd constantly notice improvements)
    Overall great work! Please make a Patreon so I can give u my money
