i really wish too, but forget about it, this is really a hard task to do, you need to know some programming language that has a pretty decent performance.
I'm very glad you are making this mod friendly. There's a million things that could be added to the base game for different styles of play, and its exciting to think about what cool mods there could be in a few years.
I remember finding your channel and losing my mind when I saw you made the blockheads, I used to play it all the time and is the reason I love classical music so much
This has got to be my favourite devlog series I've seen so far, been following since the Worst Haka ever episode which caught my eye because I'm a Kiwi aswell! Also loved playing blockheads when I was younger. Big fan of your work mate :)
Don’t you just love when you fail in searching for something, but then just as you have lost all hope, RUclips recommendations descend on you like a glorious angel with exactly what you were looking for?
Looking amazing, newbie here to game creation. Love what you are doing and will have a day one player here. All the very best with your project. Look forward to more of your dev vlogs , Keep updating us.
I forgot just how big that planet is. You kept zooming into it in the beginning and the land's definition kept getting higher and higher. Crazy stuff, very impressive!
Amazing! you have already gone above and beyond my expectations! your AI is more evolved than most AIs in this genre, I love the idea of individual thoughts and initiatives, really makes the settlement look alive, when you can take time off from micromanaging and just watch your Sapiens go on about their every day routine! You can be really proud of this project! looking forward to playing it myself one day
I've been following this forever it seems! I love that you're still working on it and have come so far - this is certainly the best indie game in development & the devlog series makes it all that now special 👍 Can't wait to play for myself
Congrats with the milestone mate. I have been following you for a long time and I have always enjoyed watching your devlogs. The game looks very cool and unique and I cant wait to get my hands on it!
SO IMPRESSIVE ! Im a Unity + Vb.net + VR aspiring developer and u inspire me so much!!! ive tried to do a engine from scratch and got far BUT not ever finished (vb.net + dx9 + PhysX) and wow its allot of work...
Hey Dave! Glad to see another video from you, the game is looking great! I have a small suggestion on the tribe selection, when you are zooming in and picking out a tribe it would be really nice for the user if you could see the tribes general attributes on hover, just so that you don't have to click into each tribe. So basically when you hover over a tribe it would have general attributes like male population, female population, difficulty based on the location, just things that making choosing the tribe location easier for the player. This would allow the player to focus more on the location they are choosing vs having to click through each tribe and trying to decipher which one is the best for them. Always love seeing your videos, can't wait for the finished product!
Nice stuff. I was enjoying The Blockheads a few years ago and ended up finding this early on (back when Dave was calling it "World Project"), and I've been following it ever since. First I was expecting a first-person exploration game (like Minecraft), so I was slightly disappointed when I saw that it's more like The Blockheads. But now I see this new level of complexity, and considering the size of these randomly generated planets in the game, first-person exploration gameplay would be slow and frustrating. This form of gameplay here in the video is definitely better suited for it. Anyways, glad to see some gameplay, now. It's looking very detailed. Good work, Dave. Most indie devs don't put this much effort into their projects, yours actually looks like fun. Although this long wait is somewhat frustrating, it shows that you're taking your time to do it right. Keep at it, I'm likely buying this game when it launches!
@Dave Frampton, suggestion for when you load the world, render the earth at great distance, like how moon appears for us, then slowly zoom in or take camera close to the earth.(adjust time as you see fit) Sort of zooming in from space thingy, to hide the initial loading/poppings, that'd look pretty cool eh ? around 1:55 , that's the instance I mean. Also shelter, fire, food access to drinking water etc are initial requirements, make it so that the player can know all these parameters, Not necessarily the best combination of these, but suggestions that make players aware of these w/o being too obvious. 11:05 suggestion: allow a tribe to build paths, cleared of grass, centered around their base camp/shelter, connecting nearby water sources, food sources and other points of interest etc, paths should be smaller than what you did around 12:12, just wide enough to allow 3 sapiens to wall together. 13:45 suggestion, make it so that most sapiens are more active during day time(naturally some who are active during night time, work better in dark), and need to have dinner around sunset, then rest for the night. Make sunlight a valuable resource that a player gets to get things done per day. make night time a less active looks really promising now!
I can’t believe it’s already at 50 Looks great already Just one thing I think needs adding (though your probably already planning on doing it) is making it so you can actually see the tiles better when using the clear grass tool , maybe just fully show the tiles whilst your doing it and maybe leave the tiles you have selected to clear with a translucent tile on it or something similar to indicate where Other than that it looks great
Sounds amazing. Hope the finished game has a good in game tutorial or maybe an introductory video. I mean. I am very bad to get into a game. So I think a good tutorial is fundamental :)
ive been following this devlog a while, question? you use your own custom engine correct. I'm curious as to what graphics API you use as the backbone, great stuff. I've found a framework I like and would like to change my API but have been struggling to find something nice. Also, the optimization you've done is great .looking forward for more
I'm using Vulkan. Initially I was using OpenGL, but I decided to switch, both to try to achieve better performance, and to make the engine more future-proof. It was quite a hard slog creating the Vulkan renderer though, OpenGL is definitely more approachable. But now it's done, I'm definitely better off.
In the future how do you plan on utilising the feature of having a huge world. It seems the actual gameplay only revolves around a small area and its disappointing that the gameplay doesnt involve the huge world once you've chosen a tribe
I’m hoping he’s going to make it eventually so that technology advances really far and a tribe will eventually become an empire, spanning large regions of the planet
It might be a good idea to have some sort of quick select to access your sapiens if there isn’t already one. Like the list in Rim world. Could make it a lot easier to manage tasks and different sapiens with their different skills.
1. Can you add in beaten paths in the grass? The more a patch gets walked on, the more it becomes cleared automatically. 2. Can you add building with clay bricks? Clay and thatch make bricks and you can build houses without killing trees.
It looks really good and i can't wait to play the game ! The only remark i have is that the grass seems to grow back really quickly and it look at little bit annoying and immersion-breaking Really nice work anyway, i will buy it day one !
Hey Dave. I noticed even though you have queued up the clearing order to be continuous the grass will pop back up periodically. This is cool, but maybe to give things a sense of permanence you might consider adding a feature in which as Sapiens walk over grass it suppresses or delays it growing back? Maybe even allow for organic paths to form this way as grass gets cleared by frequent walking over the same path.
I love it! You are my favorite Dev on YT, your work ethic combined with attention to detail is amazing! One remark/question though: the density of the forests seems extremely low in your world, specifically since we're talking about the Stone Age area. It feels a bit too "empty" / big due to this. Would you see this as intended or are you going to revise this forest density?
High density forests create a number of problems. They have a large impact on performance, which means lowering the render distance, they make it difficult to see anything, which is a big annoyance while playing, and they also remove the potential for wood scarcity, which is a nice extra dynamic for gameplay. So I’m happy with the balance as it is now.
Dude this game is insanely impressive!! It’s such a good game concept, and you’re executing it so well! Keep it up! Will the game be available on steam?
Can you make a "blueprint" system where you can save your creations (like the bunk bed) and queue it automatically instead of placing all objects individually
Very cool concept. I like the idea of procedural worlds like this. Do you plan on adding LODs or billboards for the trees? I’d imagine you’ll get a lot better performance and draw distance on your foliage
This game looks awesome, how much do you plan on making cost? free or what? And you said you were adding multiplayer right, coz that would be amazing! But yeh already looks great I been following the progress since ep 1
It'll be roughly $20-$25. I'm not a fan of the free to play model, so I really wanted to make a "what you see is what you get" experience, so I'm not planning on paid DLCs or anything like that either. And yep, multiplayer is definitely a thing.
So I realise it was a while since I saw anything from Sapiens and this is a year old. But it would be interesting to see a state machine setup of how your AI works. For instance I think you'd gain by having memory for food, water, shelter, danger so that the AI doens't always go by what they can see. Also Leadership skill could be to actually influence what others do,.
I think it'd be pretty neat if you could do some cultural names from ancient cultures. Maybe having names from culturees like Mesopotamia, Hebrew, ancient Egypt, ancient Greece, Celtic, ancient India, etc along with the Toki Poa names as an option could be nice to give your players a little bit of agency on the names of tribe, without having people with names that don't really fit with the whole ancient tribe vibe.
I wish i had the talent this man has. One of the best indie games being worked on.
Aw shucks, thank you. I appreciate that :)
i really wish too, but forget about it, this is really a hard task to do, you need to know some programming language that has a pretty decent performance.
I just checked earlier today thinking it had been a while and maybe I missed a dev log. Glad to see progress is still coming!
Same!
same!
I'm very glad you are making this mod friendly. There's a million things that could be added to the base game for different styles of play, and its exciting to think about what cool mods there could be in a few years.
Probably new ages, like medivel and future
"Little bit if a loading time" literally seconds lol this is shaping up to be an incredible game.
This appeared in my feed just as I thought "Another video on Sapiens would be perfect right now."
haha, same
I remember finding your channel and losing my mind when I saw you made the blockheads, I used to play it all the time and is the reason I love classical music so much
Turtleplaysgames ikr same here
HE made the blockheads? Oml I'm definitely staying now.
Faustine W yea man! Check out his first videos, you can sort by oldest on his videos tab.
SAMMEEE!!!😭😭
I love the map-zoom at 4:19.
I'll be Wishl-isting this!
Right before he clicked the button I was hoping for an animation like that!
This has got to be my favourite devlog series I've seen so far, been following since the Worst Haka ever episode which caught my eye because I'm a Kiwi aswell! Also loved playing blockheads when I was younger. Big fan of your work mate :)
MATE!!!! So incredibly exciting, holy heck :DDDD

This game looks incredible! Very well made.
Love that you're using Toki Pona. I've never encountered it "in the wild", as it were. Very cool!
Super cool showing off the general gameplay loop of the game. Keep up the great work Dave, im in love with this project.
Amazing progress, nice job!!!

i love the use of toki pona sm
50 devlogs already?!?...Wow...Keep up the great work mate 👍😊. Love how the game is coming along 💙
Man, this game is not only looking really cool, but it also is absolutely gorgeous! You're doing a great job, I can't wait to play it.
I've been following this forever it seems! I love that you're still working on it and have come so far - this is certainly the best indie game in development & the devlog series makes it all that now special 👍
Can't wait to play for myself
I love it when programmers optimize their games first then add new features. You are really good at this. Keep up the good work we can wait for sure.
Love the progress. Can't wait for it to release and I'm excited for more parts to this let's play.
This is the best indie game in progress that I have seen on RUclips. Great work.
I hope that Civ can learn from your world design mechanic because it's seriously brilliant.
Great job! It's great to see some actual playthrough-style gameplay, keep it up!
lets not forget, he made blockheads. I actually have really great memories playing that game with friends years ago on school trips.
Congrats with the milestone mate. I have been following you for a long time and I have always enjoyed watching your devlogs. The game looks very cool and unique and I cant wait to get my hands on it!
i think you should add a ranking system for example: Tribe leader, Deputy Tribe leader, Commander of Warriors, Commander of Hunters.
YES! And he could add a new event aswell with it, kinda like 2 people fighting over the rank.
I think that would be viable when there is a bit population in the tribe. Who needs a deputy tribe leader when there are seven people in the tribe?
@@exosproudmamabear558 and with time those ranks change names for example: tribe leader becomes King
Maybe make it optional, anarcho cavemen might be interesting.

This is really cool, what a fantastic concept and execution
Hey man so excited for this game looks amazing. If you ever need a play tester I'd be more than happy to ;)
Really excited for this release! Great job!!
Been watching for over a year now, this is the first time I've felt like I understood what was going on haha
Big moment for the game, nice work Dave!
That UI is next gen! Awesome man!
sooooo pumped for this game!
It really looks fun already!
Good luck and lots of fun with the development.
Can't wait to get my hands on this!
This is awesome!
Can't wait just to pre-order 💜
im so excited to play this game when it finally comes out!
I think a really nice touch would be developing the music alongside the tribe developing. Maybe from tribal to medieval or something like that
Love your videos, they're so mellow and interesting
This is amazing! reminds me a bit of dwarf fortress but in 3d! sick AF.
Very cool.
five ears ago it was called ambience now its called sapiens that means i need to catch up
The game seems to be in a real good state! hope to play it still on 2020

it might save some repetition and be more realistic if paths formed automatically when people walked over certain areas frequently enough.
