I did not think I would follow the development of this as much as I have but you’ve done a great job explaining your approach and process throughout it all. It’s been great seeing your vision for this game come together so nicely!
As someone who plays majority Early Access/Indev games im happily waiting for new content, its like waiting for the next weeks episode of your favourite TV series
I agree with your decision of not changing anything. I really enjoy how it is going right now. Also don't feel bad for doing the small maintenance stuff. It is really important and if you neglect it in favor of content then people might start to have the expectation of you to always push out content updates. When it comes to medicinal plants I would love it if different regions have different solutions to the illnesses the sapiens can catch. That way the start at a different place in the world comes with the consequence that you need to find out what plants are available and what they do from scratch.
For the war: In ancient history it seldom was the blood fest most people will imagine. You can implement it as a sort of stand off too: Sapiens from one side standing 10m away from a line of sapiens from the other side, spear waving, shield banging, spears get thrown and one side runs away, maybe evne without having lost one, just a few injuries.
As a Steam Deck user I appreciate the controller support. You might consider the sizing of the UI at small screens. Some games have an UI size option (small/medium/large).
Loving Mac support over here. Thanks. Keep doing everything the way you feel best. I really enjoy those semi technical, longer devlogs and I am looking forward to everything coming up.
So happy I've stuck around to watch the development of this game!! It was truly so much fun to immerse yourself in and I can't wait to play again to try the new content I've missed!
I don't know if you pay attention to these comments but I wanted you to know, first of all, I did not realise this was a one man show. And I'm completely blown away. The content and the complexity of the game was screaming small dev team to me, so bravo on that! Second, I was feeling impatient until I realised you were just one person, take your time, take your days off as you need them, do you. Your game is amazing (I would like to see more of the medicine herbs spawning) and I am excited to see it grow!
Have enjoyed your Dev logs over the years and excited to see it coming out on Mac! Great that it was so easy to port to mac as you have kept this in mind all along. Thank you Dave!
It's great seeing how you finished your game. I started watching when you developed your planet generation and was instantly hooked. I really enjoy playing Sapiens, it's so relaxing once you have a nice society going. I'm looking forward to see what's next, after your well deserved break.
New to programming as a hobby to do exactly what you've done. I've seen this game on steam. Been interested. But now I must purchase. You've lived my dream and designed a game in my favourite genre. I will be grabbing a copy!

I actually am so excited for the Mac support. I played so much of the game when it became available, and unfortunately had to stop when I had to return my windows notebook to my company. Keep doing the amazing work you do!
hey dave just passing by to thank you for the childhood memories i have created due to the blockheads and its great to see you are working on a new game aparently
This is a top 2 game for me, for games I’ve played in my lifetime. Only beaten by Civilization. But I’m really surprised you haven’t included a necessity for fresh water mechanic. The abilities and content from that alone such as irrigation and aqueduct systems would be cool to develop. Super excited to see the sapient go through the Bronze Age though. Hopefully some building with stones is in the mix somewhere. Love your work life balance man. It’s hard to wait for new content but hearing that the wait is for family time makes it all worth while! Cheers mate
Now that we are starting to get quite a lot of things to grow are we going to ever getting planting zones? If you do plan on this, what do you think the best way of implementing it will be? (Box zones, drawn polygon zones, tile zones, etc.)
As of the current version of Sapiens, I found it quite challenging to find all the ingredients for all the meds to treat all the various setbacks. And so, it's a good idea to build an outpost far enough to quarantine the infected. Given proper stations and ample food supplies from the main camp, I managed to keep the game virus contagion free by letting the virus run its course for each infected at the outpost. And with that, all the infected were saved one by one and kept the main camp safe and kept a diligent watch over who visits or wish to join the tribe. It's a good idea to monitor any infected at the outpost also as they will first attempt to return to the main camp. This is the only game that appeals so far in terms of "leading the pack" so to speak, a well thought out game world. I would like to see a different color to distinct the infected (viral virus) and even see it flashes on the sapiens list so we can distinguish at a glance. As for the other kind of danger coming from mammoths, it would be neat to have a research tree on traps, things to impede them from harming the sapiens and of course another means of obtaining their well earned furs and meat to provide for the whole camp and outposts. Not sure exactly when bows and arrows were invented, but it would be interesting to see that aspect into Sapiens on the scale of sapiens evolution. Since I love fishing, that too, would be a nice addition as we can reach large bodies of water (lakes, ponds, and even the seas), why not spear fishing for sustenance as well. Down the line, rafts, wood boats. Would be nice to create baskets made of flaks twines to carry much more on longer trips (exepeditions, migration).
for a while I’ve been calling this game “Dave Frampton’s Sapiens.” it sounds a lot more official that way. if the game ever needs to be renamed, there you go.
if it ain't broke, don't fix it. stay the path that's working for you. As much as I would love a larger experience, the game is quite wonderful already.
I will definitely work for free for you just to learn and help this game grow if I'm given a chance, my brain is really bursting with ideas watching your videos.
Been following you from pretty much the start of the devlogs. One of the things that excites me the most at this point about the game is the modability. Any time I see a platform like this, and then mod support I get visions of a world filled with absolutely any item/plant/animal/rock you can run into in the real world. I would be really curious to hear what your thoughts are on the limitations of the engine in terms of capacity to load different types of things into a world. How many different *types* of plants/animals really make sense from a performance stand point? Does modding support all aspects of the game, such as base resources and derivatives? Jobs? Thanks for your thoughts.
Most of the performance limitations come from the quantity of objects, not the diversity. I think it will probably stay that way, it's one of the benefits of the art style with no textures and low detail models. So there shouldn't be any major problem having thousands of different types of objects. I agree the potential for mods is pretty exciting, and yep, all of the skills/resources/AI etc. are in the Lua code so are fully moddable.
Have you thought about bluring the shadows the further away it is from the object? I think it is a huge improvement visually, specially if you have mountains that cast shadows on terrain
As a Mac, and Steam Deck owner... I do appreciate your efforts to make your game available to as many people as you can, I think the reason why there are few MacOS players is because we do not get enough games, so we buy consoles. Well, that's my theory. lol - I am eagerly waiting for Mac Version and multiplayer, I already convinced my wife and my brother to get their copy! :P
Awesome news about the controller support, been playing on Steam Deck so more native support would be handy. Cant wait for the multiplayer support. Would be interesting if we can get the dedicated server working on a raspberry pi. If your planning Linux I think it should be attainable.
Hi Dave, I've really been enjoying Sapiens but the one thing that made me not jump on it sooner was the price for a game still in alpha. You should keep the price at the sale price until you're out of beta, or raise prices incrementally as you get closer to version 1.0.
Hi Dave, I have been playing your game. Its a really good game so far. I was thinking about the idea of war between Sapiens where as others have said. You could develop as a simple fight between Sapiens to more complex situations. I was also wondering if there would be more skills added to the skill tree.
Whilst multiplayer will be very cool and interesting. I see that as a minor thing you could add. Mate, I hope you realise that I and I assume, many many others expect in a few years to go from this (ancient tribes around the beginning of the Holocene) all way through to bronze age and ancient history, maybe iron works creating iron age, making huge empires from then to sprawling 1800s naval empires. For That, firstly, you absolutely have to be able to control virtually everything from the map like a Paradox interactive game as well as the view we get default. That's a lot, tbh I'd be happy with boats and some form of horseback and camelback travel. But I expect a lot from you over this decade...
Wow! Its are really amazing! I loved your game, got to be so good can play it! :> the graphics are so simple, but at the same time... they are the best!, plan some day add a system of the Sapiens can create new clothing?
