  • This week I introduce you to Giant Hogweed (Heracleum mantegazzianum), on of the most dangerous plants in the UK.
    This video is intended to act as a visual reference to help you avoid dangerous lookalikes when foraging for Common Hogweed (Heracleum Sphondylium). Always consult multiple trusted sources to ensure you have a correct identification before consuming any wild plant.

    I'm glad you saw it there and identified it. I just went walking in Glacier National Park this year for the first time and all along my path the Gigant Hogweed was pervasive. Someone is going to get hurt there. Thanks for spreading the knowledge. You have a keen eye for plants.

    Yew tree leaves, hemlock water dropwort etc., can kill you if you ingest them, but this plant can literally maim and kill you just by touching it, as you mentioned in your video. That fact makes this the deadliest plant in Britain, as far as I'm concerned. I'd definitely report that specimen you found too because it's located on an old footpath 2:29 .

    Not everyone has a bad reaction to the Giant Hogweed. Years ago I found a patch, not knowing what it was I cut several twenty foot trunks with 2 foot plus flower heads down and hauled them back home, I hoisted them to the rafters where they hung for years as a decorative thing. I wore a sleeveless shirt, touched the hairs all over, no reaction.

    Hey Dude, came across your channel the other day, absolutely amazing stuff, just wanted to let you know that the topics you cover and therefore your channel are shadowbanned on youtube, which is probably why you still only have 1k subscribers and not 100k+ as you deserve and needs to be.. focus your channels marketing outside of youtube e.g grow an instagram page with some nice mushroom pictures and direct them over here, youll see a big growth improvement.. best of wishes and keep up the informative fieldstudy videos, I thoroughly enjoy em :D

    Another fab video! Have you noticed, over the last few years... Some of the variations of common hogweed seem to be changing, almost as if they're looking more and more like they are attempting to mimic giant hogweed when young in the leaf? Or is that just me ? Haha.

    • @Fieldstudy_
      @Fieldstudy_  Год назад +1

      Thankyou! And no I haven’t noticed that in my part of the world, I have noticed that plants in different locations will vary in size and leaf shape though.
      I wonder whether it’s a genetic thing or an individual reaction to environmental conditions?

      @@Fieldstudy_ I wondered the same.... So, it was a few years ago I first noticed one that the leaves looked quite amazingly like GH. Larger than usual and 'aggressive' looking (was deffo CH though). I do think this has made me pay more attention to the many variations of CH in the following years. I haven't noticed one quite as much of an imitator but have seen the odd few each year with simpler similarities. I'm going to go back to that first spot in a few weeks/month to see if I can grab a pic of its offspring for you haha! I lead foraging walks myself, I feel I align with your approach and perspectives more than I have any other forager. I feel you have a much more selfless approach, sharing to inspire caring kinda flex. Love it mate! Thank you

      Not close enough to be sure but I think its an _Asplenium scolopendrium_ fern. Has been used medicinally and cosmetically but not eaten.

    • @Fieldstudy_
      @Fieldstudy_  Год назад +2

      Yes indeed! As Pat said it’s asplenium scolopendrium or ‘Harts-tongue Fern’. Very common down here where I live 😀
      Not an edible species to my knowledge, in fact modern science has found that many Fern species have mild carcinogenic properties so I tend to steer clear of them entirely nowadays.

    Is it true that common and giant hogweed can cross pollinate to produce a plant that looks like common hogweed but has the phototoxicity of giant hogweed?

    Is it just as dangerous at this stage in growth as it is when fully grown?
    Its easy to identify from a distance when fully grown (obviously) and to keep kids away, but when it's this young it may not be.

    • @Fieldstudy_
      @Fieldstudy_  Год назад +1

      Morning Matt! Yes I’m afraid the plant is still phototoxic at this early stage of growth, but it’s a great opportunity to teach your kids about plant identification and what to potentially avoid.
