Making Custom Speaker Mounts

  • On this week's show, I just couldn't bring myself to spend $60 per stand for the wall mounts of my new surround sound speakers. So instead of dropping $120 for the pair, I welded my own custom speaker mounts, using scraps of steel and my tombstone welder. From trash to treasure. I hope you enjoy the show.

They look good. “like a dog’s breakfast”. I have not heard that in along time. So, where to you store all these tools in that tiny workspace?

All of my tools are on wheels and are fully portable. The footprint of one tool, usually houses more than one tool. For example, my workbench has a huge footprint in the shop but underneath it, is a mini router table, my metal chop saw, a 24" exhaust fan for HVLP spraying, my compressor, two nail guns and my HVLP sprayer and my tombstone welder. It's all about space management Scott. I've been tidying things up lately and doing a little extra organization and once I am done, I am planning on filming a shop tour again. Hopefully soon. thanks for tuning in.

Great job Kenny! I like how you integrate safety into all your projects. My shop is pretty large, 32'x48'. Not only do I woodwork, but I also weld, stain glass, and maintain my equipment in the same space. I have fire extinguishers EVERYWHERE! Oil or solvent soaked rags are tools of the devil in a shop! You can never be "to careful."
Fantastic show with an awesome little project! Thanks Ken!

I totally agree about the rags and about the fire extinguishers and about......well I basically agree with everything you said. You can never be too careful. Thanks for tuning in Dennis and for the kind words.

Hi Kenny, good job there, I don’t think those speakers will fall down🤣Can you at least get a black sharpie for the screws/bolts holding the brackets🤪Me thinks you should counter sink them.

I could paint the screws I guess, but I wanted to make sure that they didn't fall down first. LOL. Thanks for tuning in.

They look great. I wouldn't trust myself welding, I'd probably burn the town down.

That's what fire extinguishers are for Mark. LOL. Thanks for tuning in to the show.

You, sir, are a class act. I really like the work you did today but more, I loved the commentary on why we do the work we do in our shops. It IS because, in most cases, we can fabricate things that fit our needs precisely and with better materials than we can purchase premade. Spot on. And I loved the “like a dog’s breakfast” analogy. Great job. Thank you.

Thanks for the kind words on the show. I think most folks don't give themselves enough credit to make things instead of buying them. The only way to get a skillset is to practice it and the only way to practice it is to build things. Thanks for tuning in.

You might have considered making the mounts from hardwood?
I love the Sonos speaker system. it wouldnt eliminate the wires needed for power, but overall it is a great system

I've been quite please with the system so far Woody. It sounds amazing. As for the hardwood,..I considered it but had a few piece of scrap metal kicking around. Plus, I hadn't welded in a while and wanted to play around with it. Hardwood would be a great option though. Thanks for tuning in and for the kind words and the suggestion.

Sometimes it's cheaper to buy, when you consider the cost of materials and your time and effort ... but it doesn't matter, the process of making something yourself and being able to say that you made it, is far more satisfying 👍

Every piece of these speaker stands was made from off cuts and scrap that had no use otherwise. I was happy to use them up so that they didn't go to waste. My time, while it is worth something, is well spent making something for myself that is higher quality than what is available in the stores. Thanks for tuning in Barry.

As always excellent content…I too cringe at the lack of PPE on some content producers when welding, not only the heat, but UV exposure is quite dangerous.

I welded once and forgot to put on my leather steel toed boots......ONCE. The hot slag dripped down, hit the top of my nylon running shoe and burned right down through to my foot and blistered up two of my toes. I never forgot any piece of my safety gear after that. Thanks for tuning in this week Newton. It's appreciated.
