Fave Mannie Fresh-produced track -- GO!
    TIME STAMPS:
3:11 -- Mannie speaks to the importance of owning the rights to your own music, especially during a time such as the pandemic, with music streaming at an all time high. He also talks about his 'Virus Killaz' and 'Gospel Get Down' online DJ sets he's been doing during quarantine. They then go on to discuss how deeply music is ingrained into the New Orleans culture and lifestyle, the '7 Ward Splash' parties, as well as the respect for the DJ in the city of NO.
8:59 -- Mannie talks about how much his mother being a teacher impacted his entire life, from how it shaped him at a young age to his approach of his craft and career. He's also asked about his father known as DJ Sabu, and his legendary status in New Orleans, and if it was a natural stepping stone for Mannie going from a DJ to a producer. He talks about getting the edge over other DJ's with his 808 drum hits, as well his influence from the innovative group Mantronix, and New Orleans' love of all hip hop, regardless of geography.
21:16 -- Mannie explains how Mia X, his friend DJ Wop, and Denny D linked up in the 80's to form their group New York Incorporated. With Denny D being Mannie's DJ mentor, teaching him the technical side of the artform. He also gets into his long-time friendship with Trombone Shorty and breaks down how Shorty's knowledge of music theory helped Mannie with his process of creating music. Jasmin goes on to ask Mannie about his 'Dive' collab with Big Freedia: Queen of Bounce, and if the full-length album is on it's way.
29:34 -- Mannie tells about how he linked up with Birdman and Slim, leading him to becoming Cash Money Records' in-house producer. He lays out the time-line of getting regular DJ gigs, then making a name for himself with his bounce music productions and how that connected him with Baby and Slim. Mannie is also asked how he feels about his signature sound having such an overwhelming influence on the future stars of New Orleans hip hop. He points out how some of the most impactful productions came from just playing around with his beat machine on his kitchen countertop.
35:35 -- Mannie illustrates Juvenile's background as an off-the dome freestyle emcee that many aren't aware of. They also get into the classic 'Back That Azz Up', how it's been turned into a woman's anthem, and Mannie is asked if he had any clue the song would still be getting so much play over two decades later. He talks about the light going on with the idea of combining 808 with classical, the evolution of the twerk, why Juvenile's '400 Degrees' needs a re-release, as well as 'Back That Azz Up' being one of the true essentials in the DJ tool bag.
44:14 -- Talib notes one of his personal favorites from the Cash Money catalog being B.G.'s 'Cash Money Is An Army'. Mannie gets into B.G.'s street persona opening doors and widening their fan base, speaks on the limitations of his production equipment and how that hindrance actually made him better, as well as the immense level of talent Lil' Wayne was showing at such an early age and him waiting years to curse on his records. Mannie goes on to reflect on the time Wayne told him he planned on changing the trajectory of his career and lyrical content to new heights with 'The Carter' and touches on Wayne's keen ear for beat selection.
56:12 -- Jasmin notes one of her personal favorite mixtapes with Wayne's 'No Ceilings' and Mannie responds with how the musical chemistry he has with Wayne has stood the test of time. He also responds to the question of if he has any regrets about Cash Money's reluctance to do collaborations with the other big artists of the time, or if he thinks keeping the circle tight was important to their success. Mannie and Talib go on to share how huge it was for them when they got their name drops from Jay-Z.
1:02:29 -- The convo then turns to the power of words, the responsibility that goes along with having a platform, speaking things into existence, and Mannie's mother telling him he better have an answer for everything he writes. Mannie also responds to the criticism of Cash Money Records and their unbridled materialism. He explains that he never wanted their bling brand to take over, he just viewed it as merely the lane that they occupied in the grand scope of hip hop. Mannie is also asked how he feels about Cash Money changing the industry with striking a 80/20 split record deal.
1:09:47 -- Mannie is asked about his exit from Cash Money over business disputes and if it was just business, personal or a bit of both. Also, how his relationships are with the other members present-day. He's also asked if some of the conflict came from Mannie's laser-focus on the music side while neglecting the financial aspect. Mannie then shares hard lessons learned from Jay-Z about carving out his own niche, when Mannie arrived at Def Jam and Jay-Z told him he was jumping ship. Mannie is then asked for the current status of his upcoming project with Yasiin Bey.
1:19:25 -- Mannie speaks to the fallout after his Verzuz battle with Scott Storch. He details the roasts and skits he played while going head-to-head with Storch creating a lot of backlash and him having to explain himself to mutual friends and fellow music insiders. His response, "I thought this was a BATTLE!". Mannie touches on missing the memo that the "new hip hop" is no longer fueled by competition. Jasmin goes on to reveal the worst thing someone said to her during a roast, as well as what Dave Chappelle told her afterwards and Mannie talks about Dave's response to him stealing "I'm rich biitch!". Talib concludes the interview by asking Mannie what he has coming down the line.

The crazy part is people not from New Orleans don't know about all the local rappers that came from Cash Money records back when they was CMR. UNLV, Miss Tee, Magnolia Shorty, early EARLY B.G., PxMxWx and the list goes on. A lot of people know him from his nation-wide hits. I was there from the beginning...Mannie Fresh is a TRUE New Orleans legend. 💯

@ 19:23 Manny summed up the hip hop experience for most of us who grew up in the South. I grew up in South Carolina and we really did listen to everything. RUN DMC, EPMD, Rakim, Nelly, Twista, UGK, DJ Screw, NWA, MC Eiht, Outkast, Goodie Mob, Cypress Hill,Wu Tang, Too Short, Heavy D, BIG, Pac, and so on. It brought to mind a fly collab between Talib Kweli and UGK "Country Cousins," which is still an egregiously underated track (in my opinion).

Same goes to Texas. I’m from Port Arthur, Texas. I was born in the 80s so my older sisters played west coast, midwest and east coast music along with UGK and Geto Boys!

Big ups on this great interview. I've listened and have read just about every single mannie fresh interview he's ever done so alot of this I've heard before but there's plenty of great gems in this interview that I've heard so props on this interview. It was funny but not really a surprise that Baby had a rule that only Cash Money songs could be played in the studio especially for a 7 year stretch. That was funny to hear in a way but also great because that's how cash money stuck with "their own style" for so long and wasn't biting on anyone else or no other coast
