Straightforward. Works. If your hose attachment thing is too far from your pool, HVAC vacuum thing works well to start the siphon as opposed to sucking on a garden hose.
When I siphon the water out of our 24 foot round above ground pool I use my 1 1/2” diameter pool vacuum hose, it will remove the water much faster. Garden hoses come in 1/2”, 5/8”, and 3/4” diameters, assuming that you are using a 3/4” garden hose, if you use your 1 1/2 inch pool vacuum hose you will empty your pool four times faster, because if you double the diameter of a pipe or hose you will QUADRUPLE THE FLOW simple fluid dynamics,
What I do, when siphon, I prep the hose like when cleaning it to vacuum. Get all the air out by feeding it into the water. Once you get to the end i make sure the water fills up to the tip. Cover it with my hand then puul it over the edge. It begins flowing all on its own
You can use one of the 1 1/2 inch vacuum hoses for a siphon also. Just use a rag to fill the hose at the faucet. Drained a 30 foot pool pretty much overnight. Thanks.
You can sink the hose as well, throw in one end of the hose into the pool and make sure it stays on the bottom (flat) then stand on the ground at the poolside and feed the hose straight downward into the water, its ok if the hose floats to the top as you go as long as the end stays on the bottom. When you get to the other end you should see water filled inside the hose. Sink the last end of the hose and put your palm over the end of the hose underwater and violently rips a few feet of hose out of the pool and release your palm at the same time. If you have done it correctly you will have water draining out very strong. We use the hose that you clean the pool with so it drains faster! Good Luck!
Hi Chad! Great advise you provided here. What not to do: You said don't slash the liner and why. Good info but if I don't want the pool is it okay to slash the liner? See, I'm house hunting and there's a house I'm interested in that has an above ground pool. I cannot stand above ground pools and if I buy this house I want that pool and deck gone ASAP!
Wanted to share how I just drained my 26' coleman pool. What I did was hooked up my pool vacuum and vacuumed it all to waste. got me within 2 inches of the bottom when the top of the vacuum wasn't a good seal and started air locking the pump. Now I'm trying to figure out how to get the last 2 inches out as it's almost below my drain.
I have a 15x24 oval pool I've drained it using a sump pump. However now I have a shop vac but for some reason the shop vac won't suck up the rest of the water so I'm not sure how else to do it basically I have to redo the pool and have to clean it because I had an idiot put it together and did it very sloppy and now it's not leveled. I guess the siphon method will be the best method with a garden hose? I wish these pools had you know drains where you can just unplug the drain and it just pours out
I don't have a fancy pool, just a dough boy so I'd have just flooded the whole yard all at once if not for this video 😂. Love the hose siphoning trick, never thought of that.
We just recently bought a house that has 24ft above ground pool. Agent was not sure how long the water has been in it. However the last person drained the pool half way. (Covered) Should i pump it all out and start fresh or go ahead and fill it clean it up and level all the chemicals in pool? Thanks in advance for the suggestions.
Michael Lemons Go ahead and fill it and clean it. If you drain the water all the way out the liner will shrink up and ruin it. Then you would have to start by putting a new liner in it. ruclips.net/video/4lSyf2RNw_w/видео.html
Michael Lemons ofc you should pump it out! chemical level must be administrated on a monthly basis, also try checking my pool drain guide here - simplepooltips.com/drain-pool/ , maybe it helps
Ned Kampmann Thanks, I have already gotten pool situated. It's been open since Memorial weekend. I topped it off cleaned it up and had water tested at local company and everything is good. Water checked a few times a week and adjusted accordingly. This is actually super simple to upkeep. :-)
QUESTION: Have hole in pool about 2.75 feet up from bottom. Water is now Green. Should we drain and leave pool empty for the winter? Should we leave water as is and leave uncovered for the winter? Will the green water turn to thick sludge by spring? (If we cover the pool, all is good if there is no snow or ice on top of the cover, but it will get weighed down with ice and snow, pulling the cover down into the pool until it reaches water depth of 2.75 feet. Wont this alone pull the edges into collapse mode? I don't want to waste time covering it, adding water jugs around the pool to keep cover taut, and have to empty water from the cover - when its unnecessary. Any real advice? I'd appreciate it... PS this isn't max but his mom
Thank you for the info, the sump pump worked great now we're trying to figure out how to get the last 1 or 2 inches left in the bottom. Our pool is 48 inches high so a wet shop vac will be difficult.
Get a transfer pump from Harbor Freight or Amazon. It can handle the last inch of water almost down to nothing. You will need to babysit the hose when water level is lower than 1 inch though. Also a lot faster than shop vac or siphoning.
It worked!! I literally watched what to do and then went outside and got started. Water is flowing nicely now just gotta wait and see how long it'll take to drain. 😁😁 thanks!!
I just got a “permanent”above ground after I set up my soft sided Coleman pool 2 weeks ago. Water chemistry is great in the coleman. My plan is to transfer the water from my Coleman into my new pool by siphon. Any reason I shouldn’t? 😂
I take a shop vac and put the end of hose on inside of pool. Turn shop vac on until water enters vac. The disconnect hose and have a 2 inch flow of water coming out.
Anyone who has a drain hole can get a water hose and instead of connecting the hose cut one end of the hose off and insert it through the drain hole. Mine fits perfectly and it also creates a vacuum so you can get debris out as well. When water level gets too low it slows down, get another hose with water and put it into the hose that's in the pool for a few seconds to get it going again.( for that last part your just trying to spray water into hose to build the pressure back up)
This year we used our big very powerful sump pump as well as our little tiny pool filter to drain the pool. After the sump pump and pool filter could not drain any further, we used buckets to build the water out, then resorted to using a broom and towels. The rest of the water we’re just gonna let evaporate now.
My Grandparents have a swimming pool that has been sitting for like 10+ years. We are trying to restore it for next summer. The water maybe hazardous as may have dead animals in it. The water is black as night. How do I empty the pool safely. That doesn't make people sick?
Help! How long would a sump pump take to drain a 24’ pool? And can you attach a garden hose to it so it can teach the sewer to drain into. I’ll need to use about 125’ of hose.
He forgot to mention when you siphon the water. You do throw one in of the hose into the pool and the other end is attached to your Spicket and then you turn it on and let the hose get full of water and then you have to bend the hose so the water gets trapped in the hose and then you unscrew the hose and then wait a few seconds and the water starts coming out.
What if u have allot of leaves inside as well, do u remove as much as possible and then drain or just drain it and then remove leaves? Which would be the best perferred method? Thanks.
I have an above ground Bestway 18 ft oval pool. Some rain water got in and I haven't even used it yet!! I just got it and the tarp was good but not great. HELP!! WHERE IS THE VALVE TO DRAIN THE WATER. I CAN'T OPEN THE TWO GREY CAPS THAT I SEE. IS THIS A TRICK OR AM I JUST NOT GETTING IT. The instructions complete OMIT the draining process and I can't get anyone on the phone. I would appreciate it if anyone can tell me where the drain valve is and how to open it. Thank you!!
We used our big floor vac hose, connect directly to the pump inlet fill it with water, start the pump for only a few seconds then shut off and disconnected the hose. Drained our 24’ to half in less than a couple hours
Disconnect the pump hoses from pool. Put outlet hose in drain Use a watering can to fill the inlet hose connected to the Intex pump, once filled turn on pump and emptied in half aday
So I tried his advice about the garden hose siphon & it didn’t work. Then I looked in the comments about having to do the kink part. It’s sorta working, there is barely any water coming out would probably take like 4 weeks to empty for the size of my pool lol.
I watched a video that said if you drain an above ground pool the liner will contract, and because a liner gets hard+brittle with age, when you fill it back up the liner expands+can tear because it doesn't have the same elasticity as when it was new. The video said this possibly of tearing/damage is worse when the sun is really hot in the summer. I've found a lot of "pro's" have completely different information. It's hard to tell who the real pros are.
Just bought a house and the prev owners closed the pool with a lot of leaves then opened it in February to rebuild the deck around the pool and never took care of it. Being a new pool owner I had no idea under the green algae infested water there were leaves so I shocked the pool. Now it is a cloudy blue mess because the shock disintegrated the leaves. After a few weeks of being in the pool and sweeping and skimming and running the filer 24/7 and back washing twice a day I just cant get the water clear. Would it be ok to empty the vinyl pool half way and refill it? Maybe I can get majority of the particles out?
I have a pool to drain for my sister. She just moved to a new house that had been empty for a few years. The pool is half empty and has leaves and gunk in it. Any tips on the best way for this drain ? I assume the pool is a total loss but it creates an issues where it's located. If it's able to be repaired we are willing to do that, but I don't have much hope for it. I thought the siphon with a cheese cloth attached to block the leaves...
You Video was great and very helpful. My concern is that I need to drain only enough water from my pool to lower the Cyanuric Acid level (which is currently at 105). Do you know how long it might take to drain enough water out of my 12,000 gallon pool to lower the CYA level?
105 isn't too awfully high. I would leave it myself, but if you want to then just drain a few inches, maybe 5-8 and you should be good. The time will depend on how you drain it.
@Above Ground Pros that would mean their baseline reading would be 8ppm chlorine to free up chlorine they would need to keep chlorine at around a 10 ppm min you don't really know what your are talking about.
We just installed our above ground pool and it's not as level as we would like it to be. It's only been up for two days now, can we drain it completely, level out the ground better, and refill the pool without ruining the lining?
AGP, why did my motor automatically shut off when the water level went down under the jet returns and therefore i was left with a bunch of water still left to be drained? Thanks. PS: Thankfully the motor wasn't damaged when the above occurred and continued to work for another two months and until it gave way due to wear and tear.
+Montery12 above-ground pumps are not self-priming like in-ground pumps are. That means that above ground pumps require gravity to keep them full of water. Once they lose the water intake they can't start their own suction there for the pump runs Dry. If the pump runs dry then the electric motor will heat up and once it gets to a certain heat there's a thermal breaker inside the pump that will turn the pump off automatically to keep it from overheating.
Hey man I hooked up a water hose to my pool to drain it and it drained it all the down to like the 3rd steap and now it want let the water out and I don't know why do you know why.
Dawson Dk Somehow the hose has lost its prime. Either it sucked air or got clogged up. The only thing I can tell you is to try again and check for clogs. It can be trickier to get a siphon going when the water is lower.
Hubby started opening our pool yesterday. did everything he usually does but this morning we woke up and the pool was almost empty. We can't figure out what happened. he had the dial on winterize
+Lillian Vickers sounds like a leak in the liner or if your garden hose was filling the pool and you turned it off and left it in the pool then it could have created back pressure and siphon the pool out.
I talked to hubby. He said he took out the hose after he filled it. As for the leak he only started adding the water and chemicals to get the pool ready for cleaning. He didn't even use the skimmer or vacuum. Its just such a mystery. Thank you so much for Your help.
I'm fixing to buy a pool off of Craigslist and need to drain it quickly can I just dig 3 or 4 holes around the pool and cut the liner and let it drain like that without it damaging the pool it's 33ft round
Another option is to use your vacuum hose and put it in the pool and use the return line with the pump on to fill the hose with water once that's done then you can anchor one part of the hose to the bottom of the pool with the vacuum attachment and take the other side of the pool vacuum hose and put it onto the ground outside the pool...tada!😎
I have to drain my new pool and relevel it. I have an above ground with a simple drain about 2" from the bottom, I would like to use that water to water my lawn, does a normal water hose usually hook up to a pool drain? If not are there adapters? I would really appreciate your insight.
+C Smith no water hose won't hook up to it it would be an inch and a half fitting. I'm sure you could go by Home Depot and rig something up to be able to connect to it.
Because once the water level gets down the pool pump will lose its prime and you won't be able to start it back up. Above-ground pumps aren't self Prime so once they lose Prime you won't be able to start it back up.
This person says you should drain the pool below the motor which is on the ground. Why should I drain the water. It says in manual not to. Please answer soon. Thanks
Rosene Hacker If you do you will ruin the liner: ruclips.net/video/4lSyf2RNw_w/видео.html You are in a bit of a tricky situation. Best is to get it cleared up. If you don't have a bunch of debris in the pool then it shouldn't be too big of a deal.
You say removing the last 1-2 inches of water is shown on a liner change video. The only liner change video I see involves putting a hole in the liner. Obviously, we don't want that. Why not show how to get the last 1-2 inches of water out on THIS video? The title of the video is "how to drain"....not just "how to lower the water". Thanks.
I'll admit I didn't watch the entire liner video, but the part I have seen shows putting a hole in the liner and then cutting the liner to pick the liner up and move the water toward the hole. We will be reusing our liner...so what am I missing? We don't want a hole in the liner.
If that be the case you may need to watch this video: ruclips.net/video/4lSyf2RNw_w/видео.html Draining a liner you don't intend to replace can be risky.
I have a small above ground pool and use transfer pump from Harbor Freight. I use the cheapest one cost $43, which is rated at 290 Gallon per hour only. A good thing is it work on 12V battery power. For $90, Harbor Freight has a 1/2 HP which can handle 1525 Gallon per Hour so as long as your pool is not huge (
Hello. ..I have a question. I have an 24' x 52" Pro Series Round Pool.. and due to an unfortunate incident last summer, just after it was assembled and filled. One of my daughters friends; apparently hit the side wall so hard, that it knocked one of the steel supports off its cement foundation, causing the bottom seam to give and split open, thus evacuating 14,000+ gallons of perfect water. The new intex styled liner cost around 300 bucks. I was reading about replacing it with a new above ground type of liner within the Intex liner. Cutting the new holes, using clips to set it in place while refilling the pool to capacity... Do you know about this procedure...And which liner should I get that'd be more economic for me?
No sir I don't know anything about doing that and it seems extremely tricky to me. Plus wherever your scene split on the previous liner I would think that the new liner on top of it would just bowls right through that hole and probably bust on its own. I would highly recommend just getting a new Intex liner for it.
Hey Chad! We had a big snow storm, today I went to drain pool cover to my surprise my entire pool was EMPTY!!!! I'm very scared on potential damages. Do you know what could have happened?! Thanks for your time.
+Stilletto77 Watch this short video to see if it applies to your situation: ruclips.net/video/f0lyDxkTz0I/видео.html. It may not, because if the pool is COMPLETELY empty, you may very well have a hole in your liner. If that's the case, I would take a good look at the liner and see if you see something wrong with it and see if you can patch it, or call out a pool guy to do so.
started to get the pool ready for the summer, found the pool totaly green. Took a water sample to the local pool supply in town, The guy kept asking me if this was pool water? I assured him it was. He stated the he tested 3 time and the iron level was at 5, which he has never seen before? Stated I needed to drain the pool and re-fill it and then bring in a new water sample. The guy didn't seem to know what he was taking about, it's a chain store. He has no idea why there was so much iron in the pool. Any help or comments?
We watched this video and did what was recommended. UNFORTUNATELY we may have ruined the liner now as we did NOT see or hear ANY warnings NOT to do this. We had a lot of debris in our pool and this seemed our only option. We may not have a pool this summer now and it will cost hundreds to replace the liner, which we cannot afford. We did appreciate the video until we heard about the dangers from a friend. Then I saw another video where you explained what will most likely happen to our liner. Feeling very disappointed and mislead :(
Straightforward. Works.
If your hose attachment thing is too far from your pool, HVAC vacuum thing works well to start the siphon as opposed to sucking on a garden hose.

I used a bucket it took me three weeks

Yes
I take a shop vac and put the end of hose on inside of pool. Turn shop vac on until water enters vac. The disconnect hose and have a 2 inch flow of water coming out.
love I tried the siphon hose and it worked amazingly
Wow, 3rd method worked like a charm, thanks! :)
use pool vacuum hose. Duck Tape shopvac to start siphon then remove shopvac.
Anyone who has a drain hole can get a water hose and instead of connecting the hose cut one end of the hose off and insert it through the drain hole. That will totally depend on what size sump pump you're using but yes you can attach a garden hose to it
Will the hose trike get the last 2 inches or so out of the pool?
Probably not. Its too hard to get a siphon going at that water level.
Mine is an intex pool and it did the required job .. thank you for the ideas .. it really helped without having to suck the dirty water by my mouth 👌
He forgot to mention when you siphon the water. Melissa Shirley you can also submerge the whole hose into the pool and then just pull the end of the hose quickly and it works aswell
we know

Why not use your vacuum with filter pump

Yes, but I wouldn't go much more than half way for your own protection.

Should I drain my above ground pool? Every time I shock it it rains and turns green again
If it is a soft-sided pool then yes but if it is a metal pool with a liner then no.

Isn't pool water bad if it goes into a city street drain? or in your yard.

+Robbin Mccollum absolutely. Your liner is still brand new and nice and stretchy period
Great, thank you! Would you recommend using stones only under the polls/posts of the pool to ensure it is level?
+Robbin Mccollum paver blocks
+Robbin Mccollum paver blocks
Yes. Paver stones. We bought them and are using them currently but I told my husband that I'm afraid they will rip through the liner. Any thoughts?
Thank you so much me and my brother tried to siphon the old fashioned way and prefer this method much better
#ScienceRules!!!!! So glad I don’t have to tip over my big ass above ground pool now lol.
Can you not let the sun evaporate?
Thanks, Chad, for your information.
Thanks for the tips....option 3 worked fine for me.
I'm doing the garden hose trick now thank you for this informative video God bless
Shannon Palmer
Hey man I hooked up a water hose to my pool to drain it and it drained it all the down to like the 3rd steap and now it want let the water out and I don't know why do you know why.
Dawson Dk Somehow the hose has lost its prime. Either it sucked air or got clogged up. The only thing I can tell you is to try again and check for clogs. It can be trickier to get a siphon going when the water is lower.
great tip with the garden hose! emptied the spa! Thanks!
My neighbors drains the pool into my backyard by letting all the run and it’s making my house settle😔😖 what should I do
Hubby started opening our pool yesterday. did everything he usually does but this morning we woke up and the pool was almost empty. We can't figure out what happened. he had the dial on winterize
+Lillian Vickers sounds like a leak in the liner or if your garden hose was filling the pool and you turned it off and left it in the pool then it could have created back pressure and siphon the pool out.
that second on sounds possible. if there was a leak in the liner the pool would of emptied before we started opening the pool
+Lillian Vickers true. But I was just entertaining the idea that maybe a leak happened during the opening. Hopefully not.
I talked to hubby. He said he took out the hose after he filled it. As for the leak he only started adding the water and chemicals to get the pool ready for cleaning. He didn't even use the skimmer or vacuum. Its just such a mystery. Thank you so much for Your help.
Utube are you a good person by living waters
Where can I drain the water to?
You can drain it wherever you want to depending on how long your hose is.
I'm fixing to buy a pool off of Craigslist and need to drain it quickly can I just dig 3 or 4 holes around the pool and cut the liner and let it drain like that without it damaging the pool it's 33ft round
Maybe if there is only a foot of water left in it, but I wouldn't recommend you do that if the pool is full.
Will I have to worry about my pool collapsing if I drain it?
Thank You, I need to drain my pool for new liner
I have to drain my new pool and relevel it. I have an above ground with a simple drain about 2" from the bottom, I would like to use that water to water my lawn, does a normal water hose usually hook up to a pool drain? If not are there adapters? I would really appreciate your insight.
+C Smith no water hose won't hook up to it it would be an inch and a half fitting. I'm sure you could go by Home Depot and rig something up to be able to connect to it.
Yeah that was my original plan, thanks!
Why can't I use the pool pump?
Because once the water level gets down the pool pump will lose its prime and you won't be able to start it back up. Above-ground pumps aren't self Prime so once they lose Prime you won't be able to start it back up.
@@abovegroundpros I see. Thanks for the reply!
Brilliant way to empty the pool thank you!!
This person says you should drain the pool below the motor which is on the ground.
Why should I drain the water. It says in manual not to.
Please answer soon.
Thanks
This is strictly a video to show you how to drain the pool if you wanted to replace your liner or something of that nature.
Oh so I don’t need to use a straw?
I have not opened my pool in 3 years and it is algae infested. Do I need to drain my pool and start over?
Rosene Hacker If you do you will ruin the liner: ruclips.net/video/4lSyf2RNw_w/видео.html You are in a bit of a tricky situation. Best is to get it cleared up. If you don't have a bunch of debris in the pool then it shouldn't be too big of a deal.
I opened the drain plug at the bottom of the pool.
You are such a lifesaver!
Thanks.
We show how to get the last bit of water out in our liner video. ruclips.net/video/nmJIRMh4CV8/видео.html
I'll admit I didn't watch the entire liner video, but the part I have seen shows putting a hole in the liner and then cutting the liner to pick the liner up and move the water toward the hole. We will be reusing our liner...so what am I missing? We don't want a hole in the liner.
If that be the case you may need to watch this video: ruclips.net/video/4lSyf2RNw_w/видео.html
Draining a liner you don't intend to replace can be risky.
One of your comments shows " this video doesn't pertain to Intex pools." Ours is an Intex pool.
I clicked on this "how to get the last bit of water out in our liner video" and it says it was removed.
I don't have a pool, but I swear I look very much like you!!!!
I have a small above ground pool and use transfer pump from Harbor Freight. I use the cheapest one cost $43, which is rated at 290 Gallon per hour only. A good thing is it work on 12V battery power. For $90, Harbor Freight has a 1/2 HP which can handle 1525 Gallon per Hour so as long as your pool is not huge (
Very helpful. Thank you 💗
Hello. ..I have a question.
Very informative !! 👍🏼
Don't use a sump pump..... Use a utility pump they can get the water lower faster. Hooks to a garden hose sump pumps don't.
Found this video very helpful. Thanks alot
If you put it on x1.50 speed (faster) its good.
I want to see how to do it from the pump “ show me”
i am so 😠 mad we can't put our pool up because it has been ☔ raining. for 2 days
dont slash the liner lmaoooo
started to get the pool ready for the summer, found the pool totaly green.
Thank you 🙏
Great video thank you! Just so you know though, you only say number 1 and number 3. Thanks!
Steven Bumbe how to dry pool that colaspse as it drain
Thanks!!
Feeling very disappointed and mislead :(
thank you so much for sharing!!!
Kaitlyn Hardy You're welcome!
Great advice
Why not show demonstration as oppose to all the tips.
THANKS SO MUCH!
LOL came to watch and figure out how to get last 6 inches out of pool and didn't answer my question
im looking HOW in action
SHOW IN ACTION! DAMP IT !!!
