I’m so glad you made the recommendation to pick up a mini mass. But when it first arrived I didn’t understand why the volume knob had a grindy feel to it so I immediately unscrew the four screws and took it apart. If you haven’t looked inside I highly recommend it. It answers so many questions. There’s actually a speaker inside there without a cone. very cool demonstration, Eric. Thank you a lot. I, too, went for the Hi-Watt Hi-5 and the cab that was built for the Hi5 and the T 20/10... Love this Hi-Watt sound very very much... it really has got a bite to the sound... Got mine from a guitar store in Southampton, U. K. ... there was a short delivery time and it was for a fair, affordable, price... The cab came from a store in France... (used a well-know website to place my orders)...
Hey, I have a vintage 50s Magnatone 213a(rebranded Harmophone by a now defunct suitcase organ company) Its not a high watt amp. 15-20 I think, but it’s blisteringly loud if I wanna push it to get natural overdrive, but it’s the best I’ve ever heard. It has no effects loop, nothing. Any way I can use an attenuator or otherwise get the breakup sound at reasonable volumes that you know? Thanks.
As long as you have a 1/4 connection on your amp you should be able to hook up the Mini Mass! The folks at Weber are really helpful too - you can always shoot them an email and they'll write right back!
Thanks. I’ll reach out to those guys. But I’m guessing for that to work I would need to put a 1/4 inch jack between the amp and speaker connection since it is a small combo amp. It’s doable, but I wish there were an easier no modification solution since it’s so old. It’s probably a 58 or 9.
haven’t checked out patreon lately but I’ve been loving the videos lately, really finding your drive 😉 dig the loose relaxed vibe of this vid, feels like I’m right across from ya
Oh most definitely yes! 15 watts is more that enough for small clubs. Plus, if you’re playing bigger places they’ll mic you up and run it through the PA
First off, thanks for your wonderful lessons and beautiful playing. You've been an inspiration! Got a questions: So I have this allergy to nickel that causes my left hand (fretting), to break out into an itchy rash. GOD, WHY HAVE YOU FORSAKEN ME? I've been dealing with it for years, have seen a number of dermatologists, and the only thing that helps is playing with nickel free strings (GHS Super Steels)... which are extremely "bright" sounding. I prefer warmer tones, so I'm wondering if you might have any ideas on how to warm up my tone. I play with my fingers most of the time as picks exacerbate the bright... I ain't no shredder so pick free ain't that much of a problem. Can you recommend any pedals that can help warm up my tone? Or other tricks? I recently purchased a Deco... which is really cool. How do you use yours? Do you set it and forget it or are you changing values all the time? Currently I have the tape saturation side of the pedal on all the time... and haven't messed with the double tracker much. The tape saturation side seems to help with the "bright" tone issue. What I Play: Suhr Classic Strat (neck pick-up to fight the bright) Strymon Deco Fender Princeton Reverb Thanks!
Hi Greg! On your princeton, I would start with the bass and treble knobs quite low - at like 2. I think you'll get a pretty good balance if you set the treble at 4 and the bass at 3, but everyone's ears are different. Assuming there's nothing wrong with the princeton, that shouldn't be too bright. On the Deco, I set the Saturation side right up the middle most of the time. In that mode, it works as a compressor that grabs just a little bit of the spikes. If you turn it up to 3/4 then you get in to a really nice overdrive sound. Yeah, I don't use the other side either!
So the mini mass works well not only as a volume attenuator but it actually helps minimize what we hear of the amp's hum and transformer noise? That's a double win if that's the case.
@@EricHaugenGuitar I pulled the trigger and ordered a Mini Mass over the weekend. I'm pretty damn excited for this thing to arrive! I'm gonna run my home-built Trainwreck Rocket (basically just an AC30 Top Boost) through it. I can't wait!

I have the 5 watt version and the sound its just awesome... the only thing I dont like, is that it doesnt have fx loop, and doesnt have reverb either.. when I connect my reverb pedal it changes the tone a lot. I lose dynamics
I have this amp. But mine with a private jack speaker. With overdrive pedals he sounds incredible, ZERO fizz, ZERO mud, but with delays and modulations i noticed he eats a little of the deepness of the effect, the vox ac15 i had accepted way better this effects. Other thing, i didn't notice any difference with pedals in the send return... my loop effects is useless. Anyway, i'm very happy with the amp, he is very musical and warm, for the price is unbeatable.
hey man! love your videos. would you recommend the Hiwatt Hi5 or the Hiwatt T20/10 for low volume apartment use ? The T20/10 has built in reverb and mid controls which are bonuses for me, but don’t want it to be too much amp for me!
I need to make a vid called "5 watts is still too loud for home use" Really, even 1 watt can be crazy loud. Sonically, the T20 is much fuller and easier to dial in than the Hi5. I definitely recommend it over it's little brother.
@@EricHaugenGuitar yeah I have a Orange Crush 35RT solid state currently and put a Celestion G10 Vintage in it and it’s been really great for low volume playing. I’m trying to look for an upgrade in the tube world, and it seems harder than you would think to find something that checks all the boxes. I’d love a 12 inch speaker with onboard reverb, 3 band eq if possible, and gain/master volume with very low wattage or power scaling. The Laney Super Cub 12 looks like a solid option, but i’m having a hard time finding anything that checks all the boxes!
Wow, great video! Tell the folks at Hiwatt you just sold another amp. I’ve already got the mini mass lol. Love the reference tune selection, especially Sloan. I’m going to try it out against some Tragically Hip as soon as mine arrives. Thank you. Following.
Do you ever use the attenuator in a live setting with a bigger tube amp? It's worth the money for me to get one for home use, I'm just wondering if it could unlock some tone goodness with a Fender Deluxe Reverb on stage.
Yeah! Especially since the mini mass is like $160 - cheaper than most pedals! You’ll need a female to female 1/4 adapter and extra speaker cable too but then you’ll be all set!
Yeah I gotta shoot a vid with that! I gotta say - I really like this cab with the Fane speaker. I ran a few of my other amps through it and they all sounded good!
The Hiwatt sounds great! When blowing the the mini mass, are you playing at bedroom levels? I just can't seem to get similar tones. My princeton reverb, for example. gets the hounds howling at 1.5. 🤔
It’ll definitely let you bring it down a lot! You’ll be able to run into that edge of breakup zone without being absurd. You’ll need a female 1/4 adapter and extra speaker cable and then you’ll be all set!
I just bought the head. I'm soooo excited. I'm running it in a stereo setup against a Fuchs Backjack 21. Those amps are definitely different price points but I'm kinda gambling that sonic quality of T20/10 will hold it's own side by side with an amp that costs 3X as much. I'll be very curious to compare these apples and oranges. Oh you sold me the mini mass straight up. Weber should pay you!
@@EricHaugenGuitar Yes it definitely holds up. I was pleasantly surprised at how well. The Hiwatt and Fuchs sound even better together than I had hoped, like they were made for each other. Love your playing!

Hey Eric, can I pick your brain for a sec? Do you think there’s any difference in these two approaches... the T20/10 head vs combo (like you have)?... I found a head for $549.00 on reverb and two Weber alnicos for $149.00... I’m so close to buying a hiwatt but I’m trying to decide if I should get the combo or make my own cabinet with the Weber’s and a t20/10 head. I’d love to hear your thoughts on which might be the better route and why... thanks in advance Eric. From a happy subscriber 😁 -Ryan
Haha! I also love a head/cab look 👌 I had a dual showman setup before but sold it bc I was ignorant of attenuation. Haunts me. Anyways, that’s probably why I have a soft spot for head/cab vibes! Thanks for sharing your thoughts man ✌️
Also, heads up to anyone who sees this... sadness can come in a form of YouTubing hiwatt custom 30’s/50’s and coming to terms with “I can only afford one a t20/10 or a 40/20” ha. But I still think some of these newer ones are solid for the price.
Hi Eric! Love your videos, man. I have turned all my guitar buddies onto the “bob Ross of guitar”. Question for you - I believe that you have a vox ac15? What would you recommend - vox ac15 or this hiwatt t20/10? Definitely hearing a bit more punch with this one and I dig that.
How does this compare to the 40/20. Thinkin about getting the 40/20 for gigs. Didn’t know if the 20/10 would be loud enough and have enough head room with pedals to play on gigs.
Gear question.. What type of setting are you using on the attenuation? I was going to email you but your website says to come here instead. I purchased one, because of this video, but I'm not sure I'm getting the desired result.
Yeah to me it’s a 6L6-leaning-EL84, nice clear bottom end, vs the vox EL34-sizzzle-leaning EL84. Similar tones, but more headroom on both ends here it seems. That’s what I’m hearing anyways.. yah?
Thanks for the demo, Eric. You make it bark like it's supposed to. Your feel is money. About the Mini-Mass...it looks like they're sold out and made to order on their site. Do you know the best place to find them? They're quite scarce on Reverb as well.

Hey Eric. First, I have to say thank you for everything you do. You’re a bad ass guitarist/teacher, man. Second, I’ve noticed the guitar you play in this video having both a maple and rosewood neck depending on the vid. Do you swap the necks out yourself? If yes, I’m wondering if this is an easy thing to do or do you have it done professionally? Thanks again!
Thanks Jeff! I'd recommend having a professional do it - there's angling/shimming adjustments that sometimes need to be made. The maple neck is the orginal neck for this tele, so it fits like a glove. The rosewood neck (not as good recent MIM neck) doesn't have the same sustain and feel.

Yeah! Everybody should have an attenuator - such problem solvers!!
Hello Eric, I own a peavey classic 30 combo and my local GC has Weber Mini Mass 50watt. Have you ever tried the direct out for demo guitar recording? Not sure what your thoughts are. Great stuff.
Long live PEAVEY! Always solid amps.
I haven't used the direct out, but I say give it a shot! Add some reverb in post and it'll probably sound fine!
Hi Eric, would you please help me choosing a Hiwatt amp as you've demoed some: Hi-5 vs T20/10 head vs T20/10 combo vs Custom 20 head ( in case I win loto) , to play Pete Towshend Who's Next/Quadrophenia, in my "bedroom". Thanks.
The T20 ALL THE WAY!
it’s my fave non fender amp !
@@EricHaugenGuitar thanks a lot, just found one T20 combo with a Fane speaker , used on Reverb 😁🤘
@@EricHaugenGuitar Hi Eric, do you still use the T20 ?
Pretty awesome tip on the attenuator btw. Thanks. Great channel.
Love the Kinks riff at the end!
Yeah! That's my favorite Kinks record!
very cool demonstration, Eric.
Yeah! Very PRESENT!
Killer! What was the intro music/tune?
"Friendship" by Sloan - cool Canadian band!
Thanks.
Technically a Harmophone super 130.
After 4 years on RUclips I *think* I'm starting to become comfortable on camera :-D
I love your playing and the typical hiwatt sound...I only would like to know if a 20W valve amp could be enough to play in a band
Oh most definitely yes!
15 watts is more that enough for small clubs. Plus, if you’re playing bigger places they’ll mic you up and run it through the PA
@@EricHaugenGuitar thanks a lot ! ;)
First off, thanks for your wonderful lessons and beautiful playing. You've been an inspiration!
Got a questions:
So I have this allergy to nickel that causes my left hand (fretting), to break out into an itchy rash.
What I Play:
Suhr Classic Strat (neck pick-up to fight the bright)
Strymon Deco
Fender Princeton Reverb
Thanks!
You may not have sold me on the Hiwatt yet, but you have sold me on that Weber Mini Mass. Thanks for making this video.
Yesss! It’s such a great little problem solver - at $160 it’s totally worth it! Think of all the money we’ve spent on pedals trying to get that tone!
So the mini mass works well not only as a volume attenuator but it actually helps minimize what we hear of the amp's hum and transformer noise? That's a double win if that's the case.
Yes! So clutch!
Great to see you happy 👍😎
You found my afterschool album!
21st Century Schizoid Man on King Crimson' Court of the Crimson King. Fripp👍😎

Love brother
Yeah! I gotta do an arrangement of that one!
If you had to recommend one Hiwatt amp which one would you recommend between hi-5 and 20/10? I am also looking at the Leeds
Love that you played the Sloan riff. Are you Canadian? I play that riff everyday.
Naw I'm from NJ and live in NC but I love so many Canadian things!
Sloan, Kids in the Hall, The Band, Neil Young, Shatner!
I have the 5 watt version and the sound its just awesome... the only thing I dont like, is that it doesnt have fx loop, and doesnt have reverb either.. when I connect my reverb pedal it changes the tone a lot. I lose dynamics
Love hearing someone play Sloan! Killer band.
I was like wow sloan!
Anyway, i'm very happy with the amp, he is very musical and warm, for the price is unbeatable.
oooh I know the private jack speaker! Good choice!
hey man! love your videos. would you recommend the Hiwatt Hi5 or the Hiwatt T20/10 for low volume apartment use ? The T20/10 has built in reverb and mid controls which are bonuses for me, but don’t want it to be too much amp for me!
I need to make a vid called "5 watts is still too loud for home use"
Really, even 1 watt can be crazy loud.
@@EricHaugenGuitar hey there! would the t20 be enough for gigging live? I need it loud and clean so I'm leaning towards the t40 but I thought I'd ask!
Hrmmm I’d say your probably fine but I don’t know how loud your band is!
My blackstar ht1 is crazy loud for apartment use hope that helps. And the tone is stellar for edge of break up in bedroom volume
21st century schizoid amp.
Top job Eric
Love that riff!
Nice demo...can you also get the Townshend sounds from your Hi 5?
It’s not quite as big sounding as the T20/10 - I should a/b them. Personally I’m blown away by this amp
Great guitar work Eric !!!!
Great video... It's good to see you just having fun. I'm now searching for a mini mass.. Lol
I really stand by my statement that every tube amp owner should have one - you get the crunch, and lose the noise!
Sure your not Eric Giamatti? That amp as a really sweet clean chime. Cheers man, might go with the mini mass.
excuse my ignorance, how do you attenuate a combo amp?
You'll need a female to female 1/4 inch adapter - I should take a picture of how I hook it up!
I must get an attenuator! Has anyone tried the Weber mass 200? I noticed it has a built in treble boost. Keep up the awesome work Eric H.!
Wow, great video! Tell the folks at Hiwatt you just sold another amp. I’ve already got the mini mass lol. Love the reference tune selection, especially Sloan. I’m going to try it out against some Tragically Hip as soon as mine arrives. Thank you. Following.
You have excellent tastes as well, Mike!
The T20 is gonna SLAY with those gretsch pickups - you see!
Could you play this through the cab with the Silver Bell in it?
Yeah I gotta shoot a vid with that!
I gotta say - I really like this cab with the Fane speaker. I ran a few of my other amps through it and they all sounded good!
Random but does anyone know the bar stool he's using here? You can see it best when he gets up at around 10:29

So comfy! I use it as my office chair too - my back NEVER hurts!
Yet another great video sir!
Thanks Rich!
Kudos for playing Powerman!
I think the T20 absolutely holds up! There's something very unique about it's attack shape - it records soooooo well!
@@EricHaugenGuitar Yes it definitely holds up. I was pleasantly surprised at how well. The Hiwatt and Fuchs sound even better together than I had hoped, like they were made for each other. Love your playing!
Don't leave out the biggest hiwatt player, sir David Gilmour. Pink floyd
ALL THE AMPS!! SEND NOW!!
Big Star used HiWatts didn't they? Shoulda gone with some Chilton/Bell, my dude.
Some obscure guitarist named..Gilmour? I think he used HiWatts..idk. It could be fake news.
Great stuff. Loved the minimal use of the pinky finger. Bravo ;)
How do you think this would work with a hot rod 410?
who did the very first song you played in the intro, love that riff!
Sloan “Friendship” - they’re a killer Canadian band!
@@EricHaugenGuitar thx,i will check them out!
From a happy subscriber 😁
-Ryan
Buy the head!
Creator overshare: I totally answered this question in a dream I had last night lol
Head and cabs just LOOK SO COOL
The Hiwatt by a nose!
It's easier to dial in, and there's something so special about the growl and punch.
I love that valve hum
Hiwatt sounds great - I 've got a mini-mass too but it don't make me play as good as you do !
The mini mass is so useful!!
Dude! You do great gear demos! Why? Because you’re passionate about it. That simple. Damn, now I need a Hiwatt too 😎
Thanks so much Vernon!
And hey we appreciate the patronage too! Yay!
Where’s that backing track from?
That's a little rendition I put together of Sloan's "Friendship" - cool Canadian band!
Awesome playing 👏🏻👏🏻
Thanks Karl!
How do you connect the amp head to cabinet to attenuator
Man, that sounds excellent. Gotta get some Hiwatt in my life
This amp is unique indeed - so clear and yet mean
@@EricHaugenGuitar Hiwatt in a nutshell, right there!
Good demo. I don't see "enough" demos of this T series. It was really under-marketed. Seriously considering one now.
Thanks man! It's a cool amp - kinda voxy, but much punchier!
Is the first theme a full song or is it just a riff to have fun with the new hiwatt? :)
It's a riff from this killer band: ruclips.net/video/X2Xl7qUBOmY/видео.html
@@EricHaugenGuitar thank you for letting me know them. Btw cool riff! ;)
Ramble on Eric, ramble on!
How does this compare to the 40/20. Thinkin about getting the 40/20 for gigs. Didn’t know if the 20/10 would be loud enough and have enough head room with pedals to play on gigs.
It is LOUD. Unless the other guitarist in your band has a half stack, I think you'll be plenty good with 20 Hiwatt watts!
Also is the reverb actual analog real spring reverb with a tank or a digital emulation. I can’t find anything online regarding this.
I have Hiwatt custom 20, and an attenuator 😉 you forgot Gilmour
Ooooooh I want one of those!
Yeah odd that I left Gilmour out - obviously an epic Hiwatt user!
Gear question..
What type of setting are you using on the attenuation?
I was going to email you but your website says to come here instead.
I purchased one, because of this video, but I'm not sure I'm getting the desired result.
Crank the attenuator all the way to the left and then slowly bring it up - don't be afraid to really turn the knob a lot!
Yeah to me it’s a 6L6-leaning-EL84, nice clear bottom end, vs the vox EL34-sizzzle-leaning EL84. Similar tones, but more headroom on both ends here it seems. That’s what I’m hearing anyways.. yah?
Yeah! That's a great way to think of it! It's got that 6L6 hi fidelity thing going on!
Sounds great. Also you like very happy with it 😁😁
It’s really got its own vibe!
Wow! But.... t20/10 or t5 for apartment? :)
The T20 is much more high fidelity than the 5 watter - both are loud as heck, so I'd just go with the big boi
Thanks for cleaning the whole kitchen just for us.
You’ve heard of Soundgarden?
Welcome to Riffkitchen™!
That neck pickup & that amp = yes.
Great review mate
Thanks Joel!
This amp is so PRESENT - that's the best way to put it. Everything is right there, clean and yet crunchy too
Thanks for the demo, Eric. You make it bark like it's supposed to. Your feel is money. About the Mini-Mass...it looks like they're sold out and made to order on their site. Do you know the best place to find them? They're quite scarce on Reverb as well.
They're always built to order - but worth the wait!
You love Sloan and Kids in the Hall? I think you may be secretly Canadian.
Neil Young, The Band, SCTV, Schitts Creek, Captain Kirk, Leonard Cohen!
My grandfather was a French Jew from Manitoba so maybe I can call myself a little Canadian
Secretly Canadian.... killer band name hhmm???
It's already a record label - DARN!
@@EricHaugenGuitar A damn good label at that. You wanna go deeper into the Canadiana you should check out The Tragically Hip, feel like they'd be right up your alley.
Appreciate the insight. Keep doing what you do!
Isn’t it better to play a very low watt amp on this setting?
I have the lil' 5 watter too, but I prefer the full-spectrum sound of the T20.
@@EricHaugenGuitar i get you, i play the 1 watt blackstar at home, most of the time I enjoy, only when i record with it (direct input) and with pedals i need more headroom
