Another slice of royal insights. So many diamonds in one crown is breathtaking and just shows the extremely fine work of jewellers from centuries ago. The late Queen clearly loved the Diamond Diadem and would be pleased to see it continuing to shine. Many thanks Allan.
Thank you Allan. This is one of my favorite diadems. When King George wore it, it was so hidden under his cap and the feathers, it disappears from sight. Interesting that this might have been the first time the Imperial State Crown, and the King George diadem were worn at the side by side. Queen Elizabeth, the Queen Mother, usually wore her Coronation Crown.
I do love the notion of any particular crown being old-fashioned! Thank you for another video packed full of information. The Diamond Diadem is gorgeous, I'm only sorry there isn't an emblem to represent Wates, but we are often omitted. And how lovely to see that opening shor of Queen Elizabeth looking so happy. She is greatly missed.
The Diadem always has been my favorite royal jewel. It’s such a stunningly beautiful piece and provide an almost divine dignity for anyone who wears it. Male or female. ❤
George IV was so tacky, but you have to admit, he had an eye for bling. 🙂 It still looks strange to see it on someone else, I associate it so strongly with Elizabeth.
Camilla Had to wear it. The length of the history of Queens wearing it is too strong for her to have worn anything else. (I think she may have a headache.)
Two videos in one week...you are spoiling us all. I'm pleased that the new Queen has decided to wear the George IV coronet and The Girls of Great Britain tiara. Such wonderful works of the jewellers craft are there to be enjoyed by everyone, and not hidden away.
The design of the diadem is interesting. As you know, the traditional design for English crowns is to have four crosses (usually paté) with four fleurs-de-lis in the spaces between, but this substitutes the rose-thistle-shamrock combination in place of the fleurs-de-lis. I have heard it suggested that this was beause the fleurs-de-lis came to be associated with the traditional claim of the monarchs of England and then Great Britain to be the rightful sovereigns of France, since the fleur-de-lis is a symbol so closely associated with France, and that once the French claim had finally been dropped (in 1800) there was a feeling in some quarters (apparently including George IV) that the fleurs-de-lis should accordingly be dropped too, and replaced with something more in keeping with his actual domains. But in the end the older tradition prevailed, and I think it's actually doubtful whether the coronal fleurs-de-lis really had anything to do with the claim to France originally - perhaps you know more about that?
Just lovely, thank you. Loved the pictures of our beautiful passed queen. I think that I, like so many others, still think of her as queen. ( must admit the Edinburgh titles are the same .). Imagine how much more difficult it would be for the ‘new’ title holders, I think the king had a tough day yesterday and, at one stage m Camilla was looking at him with loving concern. First time ever I thought of her as queen. She did well. 🙏🙏🙏👵🇦🇺
From what I've seen, lots of European crowns from "back then" (whenever "then" was) had fleurs-de-lis on them. I'm not sure, but they may have been considered as much of a symbol of royalty as oak leaves. Perhaps someone else knows? Or, and this is a wild guess on my part, they might have been considered to be symbols of the Risen Christ as much as the crosses represent His crucifixion. Other suggestions are that the fleur-de-lis is a symbol of the Virgin Mary. Perhaps the two were intended to give the wearer the protection of Christ and His Mother; who knows?
I've read the reason for the national flowers and not the fleur-de-lys was because to include them would make the Diadem a prince's coronet, and George was damned if he was going to look like an ordinary prince like his brothers.
I love this. My favorite is the Girls of Great Britain and Ireland, but who doesn't adore that tiara. I would love to know about that gold livery, around her neck. And I love the little portraits of the Sovereign the ladies wear on big tiara nights.
🤩 SIMPLE ELEGANCE!…. I’m glad those original Ostrich Feathers were removed. That was simply a bit too flamboyant. That aside, I ❤️ its magnificent simplicity and dominant White Stone composition.
Allan, why doesn't Queen Camilla wear the crown of the Queen Consort at State Openings of Parliament? Surely it wasn't the intention that it be worn just once, that is to say, at Their Majesties' coronation. Also, can you help me to locate still photographs of King George V with Queen Mary in their parliamentary robes, as well as King VI and Queen Elizabeth at such occasions?
Another fascinating, quirky, subject - thank you. I’ve not seen a photograph of Queen Elizabeth wearing the diadem; did she? Or did Queen Mary hang on to it? Incidentally, it is a pity that Queen Victoria’s iconic small crown of her later years is no longer used - but I believe it is now set with glass, the original diamonds having gone into other use (?)
Did you mean the queen mother as I haven’t seen a photo of her wearing it, Queen Elizabeth II wore it to her coronation and there is a photo of her wearing it at the beginning of this video.
I would have thought that Queen Elizabeth would have worn it to the state opening of Parliament when she accompanied George VI. I would be surprised to learn that Queen Mary held onto it.
Am I right in thinking George III wanted his coronation crown to likewise feature alternative crosses and sprays of the national flowers, with these replacing thr fleur-de-lis? Tradition overcame his wishes and the fleur-de-lis remained. The fleur-de-lis are traditionally associated with The Virgin Mary, or so believe....
I saw this in my feed, and thought it would be boring... how wrong I was! Great video! Noticed Camilla wearing it yesterday, and they also showed the late Queen Elizabeth with the same diadem, so nice to have a bit of background. 😀
Stupid question - but WHY did George IV need a diamond circlet for his coronation procession hat in the first place? Was it the done thing at the time for royalty or aristocrats? Was he aping a trend in force on the Continent?
It was worn for the first time since the dear Queens death this week by Camilla at the state opening of Parliament. THE Queen first wore it on her Coronation day. It would seem that only a Queen can wear it. Its never been used by anyone else
It's not really possible to wear that little crown unless one's hair is done up in a topknot that the crown can sit on to keep it in place, and topknots were not really the late Queen's style, whereas Queen Victoria often did her hair that way in old age.
I'd like to know your opinion on why this diadem was more appropriate for Camilla to wear rather than her own queen's crown. She could have removed the arches and the cap of maintenance as Queen Mary did. I think the queen's crown would be more appropriate to wear to parliament rather than the diadem. The crown must surely be more prestigious than the diadem. Your view?
@@michaelmontagu3979 Oh, very good. I am glad you are her. She was certainly put into an interesting position in life with her marriage. I get the impression she did a good job.

When Queen Mary had it, the Dragon was represented by the wearer.
Not gonna lie, a jewelled dragon on the diadem would absolutely slay
The other realms being represented by flowers, what would be Wales' emblematic bloom? The DAFFODIL !
Aren't crown kind of 'old fashioned' by definition?
Agreed on Wales' absence. I get why it's not there legally, but I always feel its absence and wish there were a daffodil or a leek there.
The Diadem always has been my favorite royal jewel. It’s such a stunningly beautiful piece and provide an almost divine dignity for anyone who wears it. Male or female. ❤
Agreed. Distinctly unisex, which makes it unique in comparison to other royal tiaras/diadems.
I love the fact that the two crowns complement each other! Thanks, Alan!
My favorite Royal Jewel. Happy to see QC wearing it❤👑
Camilla isn't a consort, she is Queen in her own right.

When was tihis diadem worn by Queen Elizabeth 8the Queenmother). Have never seen any pics of her wearing it
She did wear it, but there is indeed no pictorial evidence. The modern obsession with photographing every royal event is a rather new thing!
A little surprised to hear this was originally for a King 👑. It seems a bit more feminine and more suited for the Queen 👸
Stupid question - but WHY did George IV need a diamond circlet for his coronation procession hat in the first place? Was it the done thing at the time for royalty or aristocrats? Was he aping a trend in force on the Continent?
Like most things with George he simply wanted to be more splendid than everyone else.

It was of course made in 1820 for King George IV and worn by him on his hat at his coronation.

How come no welsh representation on the crown
It was a Principality not constituent kingdom, nowadays it would be included alone not within the designation of England & Wales. 🏴
Seeing Camilla wearing it so soon after the Queen’s death is distasteful.
The imperial state crown should be restored to the more masculine pre-Elizabeth height, to be fit for a King
Why male royals didn't wear diadems too?
too extravagant and feminine
@@davidlogan4329 I don't think feminine...
it's just women were more fitted to wear one. it adds to their beauty & royalty. men wore it only to show authority
One of the interesting things is there is no photographic or press reporting evidence that Queen Elizabeth ever wore it
I'm confused, she wore it often. See 0:36 of this video
I still find it difficult to imagine how it could have been made for George IV, there is nothing masculine looking about it
Beautiful piece. It is very unfortunate that the wearer didn't look too impressed about the whole thing.
Perhaps a bit of nerves. The diadem looks a bit large for the Queen. A tumble to the floor would have been perceived as an unfortunate omen .
Osteoporosis runs in her family. My guess is the Queen had a headache. That thing is made of gold and silver so is very heavy.
It looked wonderful on Queen Camilla yesterday in parliament.
My favorite crown after the imperial state crown. I like how it’s unisex. If it more vertical it’s masculine. When more outward more feminine.
This diadem is so magnificent and it's a shame that Camilla cannot wear it as gracefully as it could be displayed!
It'd have been better if she had used Queen Alexandra's Crown, which she used for her coronation.
Or the crown of thorns
Camilla never looks good, but that photo was a shocker.
Camilla doesn't look regal at all, no matter what she's wearing.
I disagree.
