On the 200th anniversary of George IV's accession to the throne, this lecture considers whether or not he had any real impact on the fast-industrialising world around him, and the turbulent political times he lived through. When George was young, opposition politicians worried about the 'secret influence' the monarch could wield. By the time he died the limited power of the monarch was confirmed. But did the shift have anything to do with him at all?

Love that these lectures are made available for free on RUclips. Thank you!
I was lucky enough to visit both the Brighton Pavilion and the George IV exhibition at Buckingham Palace late last year, so it's great to have both the building and the artworks put into their rich historical context.
Either way I was FABULOUS
You know, I always thought so, too! 🥋🧣🍷♟💕💋💐
Delightful! Not sure which I am more enamored of, the chalk on the professor's coat, or the line "he was so drunk he fell into the fireplace".
Gresham lectures are usually well produced however the sound on this is appalling..I have the volume on full and yet it is almost incomprehensible. Why?
Brilliant, it gives me a new perspective on George IV. Thank you.
Thank you so much for such an interesting lecture. Not too long and perfectly presented. I wish you would do all Kings and Queens from William 1st through to George 5th. It is wonderful to have things read aloud. October 2021.
I agree, I really enjoyed this lecture, thank you. October 2022 🤞
Very interesting, and has some sympathy and understanding for a person whose life I should not want to have lived. George IV is such a caricature of the debauched 18th Century wreck, it's important to remember he was a human being. The "Prince Regent" mini series from decades ago does the same thing - it is not flattering, but it's honest and doesn't bias itself for or against him - very much worth watching for those who would like to know more about this contradictory king.
Brilliance in delivery of a extremely controversial character. George IV may have been a mixed personality, but he behaved atrociously towards Princess Caroline of Brunswick
Yes, humiliation in spades, yet Ch V1 wasn't entirely noble either
These Lectures are very interesting!!!!!!!!
This is fascinating!
Thanks - excellent!
More of this!
During this lecture, I was thinking more and more about the similarities between George IV and Boris Johnson. And then, hey presto, the two cartoons at the end appear.
Quite right Sir. They are both a couple of jokes! Regards.
Ditto - Boris would have a great king - For the laughs anyway!
Great Stella affascinante lezione !
Boring.
In fact, quite the opposite. The content and delivery is fascinating.
