Studio Zero have come to the fore with their inaugural project. While they also worked on the re-release of Catherine, Metaphor Refantazio is their actual baby, a game that has been in development since 2016, and it is a triumph in every way.

Game doesn’t have many fresh ideas compared to its other IP’s but I definitely appreciate the fact that it’s a lot better than rebirth. I feel like rebirth stole my money and kicked me in the balls.
I’m about ten hours in. I love the other atlas games but holy cow. This is amazing. They took the best aspects of SMT and the persona games. Shoved it in here. Then filled in everything else with a unique flavor and world. It’s so well done.
this game is quickly soaring to top of my personal greatest rpg's i've ever played.
Me too. I loved FF7 rebirth, but this is a pretty special game. I’ve never been interested in persona because because of the school setting and teenage dating aspect- it’s well done, but not something I’m interested in.
But I was blown away by the unique world, fantasy setting and characters in this world. I love exploring the world and the mature themes. I also enjoy the combat, job system and relationship building but it’s the world and story that makes it special for me.
How would you compare to persona 5 cuz I might buy it
How many RPGs have you played?
@@Satyr42 hundreds
@@luroc And out of all of those a Persona reskin is your favorite? Don't get me wrong, the game is good. I'm enjoying it. But is it the best RPG ever? Let's just say our tastes do not align, and that's OK.
Can we take a moment to praise how ATLUS remains wholly faithful and consistent to fully turn-based RPGs? Now with a job system too, it's basically a PS1 style JRPG but much more modern and fun. I really respect how they never detached truly from Turn-based but instead, are finding ways to perfect the style with introducing new elements meant to reduce grind and increase effectiveness. I hope ATLUS never strays from Turn-based and does a Square Enix move with FF shifting from turn-based since X (Their recent action entries, Rebirth and XVI are pretty great but god I wish for FF to return fully to it's roots one day)
FF has lost its identity mostly as a result of SE actively trying to appeal to "the global audience". As long as Atlus doesn't go that direction, we're golden.
I agree in some respects, FF16, had me scratching my head thinking what exactly square intended with the action combat and taking out almost all the RPG elements, but FF7 rebirth’s combat is one of the best combat systems in a RPG I’ve experienced.
It’s a nice hybrid of action and turn based allowing you to balance or focus on either. It also has a lot of depth and customisation. It’s really well thought out.
It took me a while to get to grips with it, but once I did, it became very addictive.
I hope they continue with it. For me, FF7 remake was a game that kept the RPG traditions of previous entires, but as with almost all the main FF games, wasn’t afraid to take risks and try new things.
@@ltb1345That's not true. Every game since FF7 was designed to appeal to the global audience, considering their promotions and based on Sakaguchi's interviews. Also even according to the series founder, who liked FF16, chose to endorse, has said that final fantasy is an evolving and changing series, by his own words. These games were never meant to stay the same. I don't know what you people gain from disrespecting the series creator's vision of change, so that you can get the same thing over and over again, making up fake reasons to cope with your fear of change.
@@johananj.j8003 No FF7 was designed to appeal to the Japanese audience first and foremost. Also, the global audience does not exist. Unless you want to tell me there is absolutely zero difference between Saudi-Arabia, China and the US and all the people in all the different countries think exactly the same, view the world the same way, and have absolutely zero cultural differences between them.
@@Satyr42 It was designed to appeal the Japanese audience💀? Did you even follow the marketing campaign at that time? They collaborated with SNL, The Simpsons, DC, Marvel and Pepsi across a three month campaign across the world. Which one of these sounds like Japanese to you. Small advice, talk only if you know anything about what someone is talking about.
Also since you wanted to steer away from the core topic to something unrelated, I'll answer that as well. A global audience is a large group of people across different countries and cultures who can be reached through various media platforms. Just because you don't know, doesn't mean they don't exist.
Definitely plan on getting this!! I heard nothing but great reviews so far!
I was gonna put this on the backlog but hearing you give it praise is changing my mind 😂
There is actually a way to change archetypes easily, from the equipment menu, you just change the weapon and that is changing the archetype!
WHAAAATTTT?????
Is that easier than selecting the archetype from the same menu? Seems like pretty much the same thing, if not a little more work, since there is less options to scroll through.
you don't have go to more ? 😂
@@Zeik56 Nah it's significantly faster since they're in a static order and you don't have to fight with a cursor. At least for me it is.
@@tbnwontpop8857 I think maybe we're talking about the same thing, but you worded it weirdly and it confused me. As far as I can tell, you can't equip other weapons with different archetype to change your archetype, but you can change your archetype from the equipment menu (like changing a weapon), which is what I was talking about, and that's definitely way faster than going to screen where you unlock new archetypes.
Don’t forget unicorn overlord
Vanillaware ≠ Atlus
Indeed a awesum game . Top ten surely ever in this genre
The writing in the game was pretty childish. Every enemy joins you. Theres no feeling that you get that there’s an actual war going on.
@@WeimE28 Metaphors writing is super childish as well.
@@wurzelbert84wucher5 What part? It's anything but childish. It goes pretty deep into human's emotions, especially anxiety and fear.
You've done it again Atlus! You guys can seriously do no wrong in my eyes. Unlike certain companies who continue to make licensed anime RPGs (games).
only studio that comes to mind with your description is idea factory
Each pillar got a game this year 👀👀
Have to agree, an excellent game all round. Certainly hooked me over the last few days
JRPG fans are eating well this year.
The Runner is great. It's like the Normandy from Mass Effect, but modernized, and it really reminds me of riding an old school style of train. It's so cool!
0:07 put some respect on my goat unicorn overlord 🗣️🔥
Vanillaware never lets me down
Atlus ≠ Vanillaware
@@kewa_design ?
@@alienanxiety The Video section was about ATLUS games so leaving Unicorn Overlord out is not forgetting but intentional as it is not related to the videosubject xD
@@kewa_design of the three mentioned, only Shin Megami Tensei V Vengeance is pure Atlas. Unicorn was developed by Vanillaware, Metaphor was developed by Studio Zero, and Persona 3 Reload is developed by P-Studio.
Well you convinced me to buy it
I just finished the game yesterday and it's probably my new favorite game, definitely the best atlus game. Definitely worth the 7 years I waited for "project re fantasy"
There was one big surprise as an atlus fan in the 4th main dungeon and if you played more then just smt and persona you will also be surprised (I was less surprised and more absolutely stunned)
Also something about synthesis skills is that they aren't specifically unique to metaphor as another 2 atlus games, digital devil saga 1-2, use this same system but it's way better here
How long it took you to finish it?
Can you reveal the surprise? I finished the game and did not get it.
I just finished this game. I don't know if there is a good normal and bad ending. If so I'm sure I got the good one. LOVED IT.
Also I beleive they did a good set up for future games which i beleive will exspand the world map.
Edit: I also love how in the start and the end the narrator is also the atlus team talking to you the player. Showing how they appreciate you for playing their game.
Definitely picking this up in the future. Once I get through Daybreak, this has been pushed to number 2 on my list!
I have rarely ever wanted to stream a game, let alone an RPG. This has changed that.
So far I'm about 10 hours in or so but the story is ok. I'm wondering if it'll pick up but ... mmm we'll see
USE THE BATHROOM ON THE RUNNER!!❤ Im not joking it takes zero time along with the shower once its functional. Bathroom occasionally raises your luck parameter and you get 100 normal exp from the shower❤❤
Specifically, the bathroom seems to raise your luck stat by +1 whenever you use it on idlesday (every date ending in 5 or 0, when all the shops go on discount). His works even if you're just chilling in town and not actually traveling on the runner.
On the other hand, the shower seems to give 100 exp every day, and the pantry gives cooking ingredients. Both can also be done when not traveling, but the kitchen itself doesn't work unless the engine is running, so you can't actually cook with it when not traveling. However, cooking stops consuming time as well once you acquire the speed cooking ability from the healer follower.
@@natchu96 okay did not realize bathroom was specific to certain days. I was just doing it daily and just wandering if id trigger it..but my luck stats already higher than my other stats because of it so yay more items lol
AHHHHHHHHHH why didn’t I know lol, I knew about pantry and speed cooking but I had no idea about the bathroom. lol my whole playthrough is ruined, I gotta restart my 60 hours deep playthrough. I must have optimal usage lol
@@Freakymonkey78 save it for new game plus lol. But yeah its awesome to not have to worry about the luck stat
@@JuliaSin oh I know, I was joking lol. But yeah have loved every second so far
It's on my shelf... must play other tinghs for now. But I am hyped
Been playing Atlus games since ps1, the ps2 era was great and it now seems like another great era for Atlus and its fans.
Unicorn Overlord was great
Smt V Vengeance was great
P3R was great
And Metaphor oh yes!
Great year indeed!!
Cheers!!
After I dropped the original SMTV midway a back in 2021, I was very vary about Metaphor, I thought I'd fallen out of love with the series. But after trying it I fell absolutely in love. I'm 29 hours in at this point and EVERYTHING is on point. The story, music, characters, gameplay system are all exceptional. I love it. Hell, I think I want to give SMTV another chance as well, with the Vengeance version after I'm done with Metaphor.
It's one of the best ones I've played in a long time, even though I am stuck at an infuriating boss fight at the moment
I'm only 10-12 hours in and this is already looking like goty for me
Wow!! What a game! I can’t wait to pick this one up! The style, music, gameplay, menu screens and overall feel, can’t be matched! I can already tell! The combat looks intriguing and fun and the characters seem so likeable! I love bonding with characters in games. I’ve never played a Persona or Shin Megami Tensei game (they are on the top of my wish list) but this one seems to have it all! Thanks for your in depth review and passion for gaming in general! Love your channel! 😃❤️
I've let it be known as much as I love JRPG's this one stands out the most to me. I could not for the life of me get into Persona or SMT series. I was still skepticle at first buying the game at full price knowing this but I had to give it a fair shot. I try to give games up to 12 hours of playtime to hook me these days, this one did it in 6 hours after setting up the story. So glad I purchased this, especially after finishing daybreak too lol. I see alot of head nods in art and style to alot of things after playing awhile as well, its like a mixture of alot of things if you can see it so thats a plus!
Daybreak music is so calming
The best thing Dragon Age Veilguard did was introduce me to Metaphor. This game does everything right. Metaphor is my personal GOTY.
was waiting for this review before pulling the trigger. ty ty
The last time I felt this fresh feeling playing a game, it was with FF12 the first time. An entirely new and fleshed out world, but with some familiar things sprinkled in. Metaphor is truly something special.
I have never played a Persona game except for maybe a couple of hours of Persona 5, but I tried the Metaphor demo and definitely enjoyed it. I don't generally like turn-based combat, but the real-time/turn-based mix along with the snappiness of the combat makes it more bearable to me. If I wasn't waiting for Ys X later this month, I'd probably buy it. Right now, I'll wait.
This is my first atlus game and this is so Goated
its just like Utawarerumono
Glad you seemed to love the game. I highly enjoyed every bit I played in the demo. So, this game will definitely go on my list to eventually grab down the line. 2024 has been absolutely packed with amazing games, especially JRPGs. Just a little over a week to go for both Romancing Saga 2 and Ys X as well!
I'm so happy to see this game getting all of this praise. The moment I laid eyes on it, I knew it was going to be something special. And I'm usually right.
Metaphor basically took the crown without any competition
I loved xenoblade chronicles 3 and the hero system. It’s one of my all time favorite games. The archetype system is similar and I love it so far
I keep seeing comments in two main camps for this game. People who absolutely love it and have it as a possible GOTY or people who like it but it’s not the best thing they have ever played, have not been sucked in by the story and have issues with other aspects of the game and prefer persona or SMT. I’m definitely in the first camp the game has absolutely hooked me unlike anything for a long time, I find myself thinking about it while at work or in bed. I understand though everyone has different opinions and preferences, i have been there before with previous Atlus games where others have been totally hooked and I haven’t been. But so far this is currently my GOTY. I will miss it when I finish it.
I’ll just wait til they release a Royale/Golden/Vengence/Apocalypse version of Metaphor ReFantazio…for Nintendo’s next system.
As what I've heard, ATLUS will stop doing that and go with DLCs instead. That's what sold me this game.
The only gripe I have is the UI/UX as beatufiul as they are. I have a hard time reading a lot of things and I always accidentally press the wrong thing
SE should take notes....this is how u make Jrpgs !!!
First 15 hours: Peak
Hours ~15-30: wtf...
Rest of the game: PEAK
I’m only just halfway through and it’s easily my personal GOTY
I remember for Christmas years ago I got final fantasy 3 for snes it was 120 dollars all those years ago I still have it in perfect condition
Excellent taste in music you based brit-bong.
I'm still holding myself from buying...knowing Atlus, they're most likely going to release a better version a year or two later. *looks at P5: Royal, P4: Golden, SMT 5: Vengeance, Catherine: Full Body*
better version or sale in 2 months. I always kick myself when I buy sega/atlus games on release
Exactly. I'm actually surprised that more people are not bringing this up. This is why I'm not buying it until they release the better version. And once it does release, everyone who brought this game day 1 will probably complain they ended up buying the inferior version.
Maybe I'm the minority here, but I actually likes the original versions more. The later version arguably 'better' technically, but they're always putting too much new features without balancing the difficulty, the "better" version ALWAYS felt so much easier for me, almost like a cheese.
Nah, I think they will not do that anymore. Expansion dlc? Maybe but not another royal golden reload version anymore
Yea idk this doesn't seem like a game they would spend 10 years making and then add more to re release, the other games were more rushed at first, it could happen but I don't see it this time, the other ones felt like they were missing stuff but I can't think of anything to add accept maybe a dlc for more content
Played the demo and was impressed, ended up ordering a copy of the full game quickly afterwards. My experience with Persona is quite limited as I struggled to click with both 4 Golden and 5 Royal yet something about this game just pulled me almost from the get go.
Game is running great on my 10 year old rig. Like you said, they fixed it.
On the hard difficulty I absolutely struggled in the early game until I found a good flow to the mechanics. This game definitely has some of the difficulty spikes that Atlus is known for. I've been enjoying my time with the game and it's probably also my pick for best Atlus title this year.
Well even normal kick my arse thanks for using the wrong archtypes against certain enemies
My first real strategy check when against the dude on top of the cathedral.
Failed 2-3 times then created this loop to taunt with Hulkenburg, kill zombies with protagonist, and have Strohl damage the boss.
Didn’t feel too bad difficulty wise, but eggman with the frogs…that fight was frustrating because no items. 😔
Pretty close to the end of game, and my only complaint is that I can't switch archetypes in battle. Makes strategy locked in before you fight, so some of the harder bosses destroyed me and I had to go through the whole rigamarole, so that's kind of annoying later in game, but otherwise, it's really good.
Persona is a school setting Metaphor
The year of Blue hair Atlus characters
bro literally every review disclaims it has been sponsored wtf did atlus went this far?
Only thing that I slightly miss is the romance mechanic from the persona games ... slightly. The game is amazing and great, regardless of that. Plus, the story doesn't need a shoehorned romance subplot mechanic either. Most games don't really. Though it would be a nice cherry on top. Either way, this is easily one of Atlus's magnum opus from what I played so far. Can't wait to play a bit more tonight.
I know I am in the extreme minority here (maybe the only person in the whole world!?) but I really wish they would dial back the menus and miscellaneous visual flairs. It’s just way too much. I hate that the battle and exploration screens have that shit around the edges.
You are not alone in this. I wish there was an option to turn it off. Likewise, the blur effect when sprinting really annoys me.
@@Enkadia you’re right, it should be an option. I feel like it wouldn’t be hard to implement either.
Hmm, I disagree on the menus and transitions, but those visual flairs like the sprinting effects, and the thing at the edges of the screen definitely not necessary to say the least.
And I think the magla particles in the airis also too much.
I can see where things can get too cluttered (magla particles in absolutely every place can be distracting), but I still love these. It helps distinguish SMT/Persona games from the plethora of games in the market, while also enhancing the experience (for me, at least).
That said, some options and toggles would be great. Some UI elements really feel unnecessary or don't need to be shown constantly.
But I definitely feel these are a positive for the series, overrall. I've gone back and played SMT3 and Personas 1, and 3, and the UI feels so dry and uninteresting (SMT3 and P1 bordering on being confusing at times).
Great game
Looks cool. I do not have a system that can run this game. But still, I hoep everyone else enjoys this game.
Best JRPG of this year
Well, I need to finish Reverie, Daybreak 1 and 2 first. Then P5R and P3R, THEN I will play this haha. Good time to be a JRPG fanatic. 😁
Really liked the demo and plan on getting this but it’s going to have to wait until Ys X Nordics lol.
Atlus has outdone themselves wow
Dang there goes my holidays 😂
I just platted Shin Megami Tensei III so I'm probably biased right now, but Metaphor's dungeons genuinely feel fantastic to me 🤣
good ass game
between Ys X and Metaphor, which gave you a better playing experience? I'm into buying one now and the other later next year.
I think many that have followed what the team have mentioned, are suprised that it turned out to borrow so many Persona mechanics, since they said that they wanted to do something completely different.
I don't know if the initial ideas was very different and they slowly turned to what they had experience with.
I will play it, but I would have been interested in seeing a new IP from Atlus that differed more from their previous ones.
This game will be such a feast, but my copy of Ys X Nordics will arrive today, so I am occupied for the next few weeks. Can't wait to start playing (and buying) it after that. Persona 3 Reload was also fun, but got old eventually. SMT V Vengeance is just the same SMT V from before, with minor changes, not worth my time (completed V with 100%).
After P3R, ill probably get this game
I'm over 39 hrs in and I have barley scratched the surface lol I'm afraid
It's really fantastic
P.s what is the background music from plzzz I know it but can't think of the game. A trails game?
What specs your PC? I never noticed a single FPS drop! At least on the demo. I don't have the full game yet lol
Hey anyone else lose their dragon legacy sword from the dragon trials questline in New game plus
I only spend 30 hours so far, so many games released I just can't finish all of them.
I'm still on the fence with this one. None of the other Atlus games appeal to me, so I was initially going to skip this one. Putting it in a fantasy setting does help, but since the basic system still seems to mirror their other titles I still don't think I'd enjoy this. I may pick it up on a deep sale, but it's not something I feel like rushing out to buy. Plus, judging by Atlus' history, there will be a definitive edition in a couple of years anyway.
Did you forget about unicorn
On PC, ah ya!
I've been playing through metaphor, and while the quality is there, the story loses its steam after the first arc imo.
I honestly feel like "the typical fantasy where you're in a tournament for the crown" like what was originally pitched would have been better. Just throw us in a world and let us fight for the crown. Make the other participants actual characters you get to know rather than having 4 lines of dialogue.
This game hits you hard, multiple times, with the same story beats. I get IT. The world is full of inequality. You start reusing dialogue choices towards the end. Idk how many times I've said, "We'll change the world." Enough that I've been auto-skipping dialogue since returning to the capital.
The social links aren't good either, imho. Your main party is okay, but everyone else is bland, soulless, and you'd forget about their links if the game didn't remind you that they wanted to speak with you. (Fr, skip one reminder and tell me if you remember to check their status later)
The gameplay is fun, and the dungeons are cool, but the story has no variety, and imo, is very predictable.
I took a break this past weekend and gave the romancing saga 2 remake demo a chance and enjoyed those two hours more than my last 25 hours in metaphor. (I have 50 hours clocked thus far)
I honestly don't get where the story praises are coming from. This is nowhere near as deep or impactful as persona 2 or even 3s story. And nowhere near as dark as any of the SMT games. I honestly feel like it's recency bias
Everyone is entitled to their own opinions, but I believe once the honeymoon period is over, people will begin to sour on the characters and plot
Level up mr More so you can change Archetypes in the menu.
I'll have to choose between this and Nordics... WHICH DO I CHOOSE?!
I love persona but 25hrs into this game I actually think this is better than persona
After finishing Meptaphor I dont know what to play anymore, everything seems so stale haha any recs?
To me, the only real bad thing about this game... is that title
Im 40 hours in, in september and i feel the game is going to end soon. Ive done almost everything so far, minus 1 bounty and 4 requests. I have 4 bonds maxed. I dont know how people are spending 70+ hours in one plathrough
The battle music instantly killed it for me, personally I find it extremely annoying. And the gameplay seems like just "another Persona game". I'm not hating on the game, I'm really glad it's that good and people like it, but I already have an insane backlog and I'd probably never get to this game even if I bought it.
It's good, but annoying to have another game for my RPG game year.
And Unicorn Overlord
That's from vanillaware. They only published it but yeah that is also dope!!
I'll be sure to play it in a year or two when ReMetaphor: ReScammedYouAgain releases with extra 15-30 hours that can't be purchased separately but only as new game like SMTV Vengeance and Persona 5 Royal.
Royal came out 3 years after p5.
Anyway atlus is switching to DLC now but I honestly prefer the new version method because it’s them taking what they learned after release and improving the whole game.
Not that easy with DLC
I am almost done with it and is INCREDIBLE! This game is easily my GOTY 2024.
I'm waiting for the ultimate (Golden/Royal/Vengeance) edition. As exciting as this is, Atlus has burned me enough.
P3R was really disappointing, so I'll consider this new Atlus game when it's on sale
Everyone gushing over this game, meanwhile all I see is Persona 6 with feminine male characters and masculine female characters.
How long is this game?
Ps4 games are still going strong..
I must be going crazy or smt. Everybody are praising an giving it 10/10. Played 30h so far.
I thinks the story writing is around 7/10 Good. (5/10 is average). Character writing is 6/10 at best. Party members are more or less your typical lets save everybody type of heroes.
Choices don't matter for example when two bad guys are fighting each other. You get to "choose" either help or just sit and watch them duke each other out. If you choose to watch, your party disagrees and here we go to save the day.
Animations (in game model) and graphichs vary wildly from good to mediocre. And the performance on PS5 is fine at best. The new combat system is much less grindy (a good thing in my books). But the job system feels lacking something compared to persona and SMT series.
Art, OST, VA work and the anime cutscenes are of cource top notch 10/10.
But it's more of a sidestep of SMT and P series than something revolutionary. And disappoints in some aspects. 7,5 game for me.
Unfortunately, after the demo, it's not a game for me, but I don't like Persona either.
I wish you all a lot of fun and unforgettable moments with the game.
For my part, I can hardly wait for the release of Ys X.
As much as I want to play it
I am gonna wait fr at least a year
As much as I love Atlus, I hate their practices, release a new game then a year or 2 later release a definitive version.
So yea I am just gonna wait fr a while
If a game is successful, most studios do sell a complete edition down the road, nothing new here.
Persona 3 is outdate its nostalgia bro its so repetitive how yall not get bore.. metaphor is actually good cause its not repetitive and tedious
games shouldn't release with no or poor AA, pixalated or blurry graphics and the need to 200% the graphics for less jagged image that will overheat your PC
It looked pretty ugly and lifeless to me in the demo. Had a much better time with the Ys X Nordic demo tonight❤
