- Ah.. Christmas! The yuletide time of santa, mince pies, chestnuts roasting on an open fire, and planning ahead for Christmas engineering works.
After 'Please Plan Ahead' GWR got in on the game and asked me to be the voice of their holiday engineering announcements.
GWR's 'Travelling at Christmas' is here: www.gwr.com/tr...
Just how I like my railway announcements, with generic office background noise
Bradley Mackey I wondered that too. I have to record audio for my online learning and even when the microphone doesn’t pick up any extra background noise I still find it hard to concentrate on reading my “script”.
IKR, daft isn't it
Bradley Mackey the microphone on the headset only picks up noise within it’s radius (5cm) so the office people won’t be heard
@@cmcevents3938 Seriously? The one in my office picks up everything in more like a 5 meter radius, so when I do voiceovers and system recordings I always break out my trust Samson C01U and dissapear into a quiet space so there are no interuptions.
arfski sometimes they are different without the fur in them
I'm a little surprised at how low tech the recordings are - in a noisy office with a headset. I would have thought they'd at least do it in a quiet room. Then again, it's not like you're going to be listening critically.
The station and train PA systems are pretty lo-fi anyway. Probably not worth bothering to have a higher quality recording.
And let's face it, the stations they're playing in are likely to have a fair amount of background noise anyway!
No point contributing extra noise by including it in the recording.
You’d think they could afford a decent mic and studio for all their voiceovers
Specially designed noise cancelling Mic.
I love Geoff’s passion.... and with this cool music he is basically the Casey Neistat of London, or at the very least the railway. ✅👌
@@---dp6wl and no weird glasses lol
That's so true!
No thanks, Geoff isn't a douchebag.
No Geoff isn’t a douchbog
@@mazdaman2315 yeah gotta hate those douchebog characters
Love you videos mate. You always put a smile on my face. Merry Christmas 👍👍
I've recently moved to London, and I haven't really had that "wow I'm in London" feeling.. until I suddenly heard your voice on the Thameslink.
Next week, Geoff records "mind the gap" and has a tubegasm.
*NERDGASM*
#tubegasm
Slough and Swindon in one video? Am I watching an episode of The Office?!
I've made a terrible mistake: I'm in Slough. ruclips.net/video/8-evKtoPN-8/видео.html
Exactly what I thought. David Brent should be doing the announcements there! 🤣
I heard they dropped an atomic bomb on Swindon...... About 15 quids worth of damage!
Oh no. Now I'm going to be haunted by Geoff every time I go on the train. Aaargh!
You can't escape him, no matter what trains you get 🤔
He knows if your riding
He knows if you are not
He knows if you're in first class
So pay for goodness' sake
@@Lauren-dz9fq *GEOFF WANTS TO KNOW YOUR LOCATION*
AsHalt You say that like he doesn't know... Help
Not if you use the Ryde to Shanklin service Jammie ;)
Ah, so I did hear your voice recently at Truro station. I thought that was you.
I am the voice of my model railway at my home.
Impressive!
It's amazing that the man talking in the background and the cough at the end didn't make it onto the recording.
I absolutely love Rob. He should be in more videos!
Thought I heard a familiar voice waiting for the school train! Great vid and great announcement. Seems like you have a knack for this kind of thing.
Love your videos Geoff! Idk why but even i got excited when i heard your voice over the PA! Amazing job
By rights, this should be the most boring video on RUclips. Man gets train to Swindon. Visits an office and records a short announcement at a desk. He then visits Slough where he sits in an empty waiting room and then on a platform, to listen to the announcement. Except it's Geoff Marshall, which is why the like to dislike ratio is 116:1. How do you make this so entertaining?
He sends out packets of cocaine to all subscribers.
Most boring..? Don't be so quick to say that.
@@ben.taylor Did you read all of his comment?
@@davidjames579 Did you read my comment? I said don't be so quick to say that, nothing to the effect of "oh look it's not the most boring video in the world".
Even if it was, it wouldn't be. Try searching up " not clickbait".
@@ben.taylor "By rights, this should be the most boring video". Meaning it's not.
He wasn't being quick to say it was boring. Far from it.
"Still grey outside" dude, you live in England...
That's right. It's one of those parts of the world which aren't deserts, so it sometimes rains...
That's the problem, even when it's not raining it's still grey outside.
That must be local dialect for it's barely not dark anymore.
Well, he's a shameless optimist.
I promise you people not from england, It does not rain in england all the time, just in the Winter, Spring, Summer and Autumn.
Geoff Marshall.
Rail Expert.
According to the graphics on BBC London this evening. You were on the final Chiltern service from Paddington to Ruislip and High Wycombe.
I've done that return trip myself. A total of five people on board, two of them were staff, including the driver.
yes yes! normally dead quiet isn't it. but almost 200 people today! that was fun ...
can we expect a video of this??
@@geofftech2 and from Platform 1 instead too? I did that on Wednesday. Quite busy then too.
Is that the so called ghost train service ?
@@timhuggins1993 thats the 1
I heard you on the announcement at my local station on Thursday whilst waiting for my train to work, was a superb announcement and I hope GWR let you do more of them!
He's got SUCH A GOOD announcement voice :)
That smile when you first heard your voice was brilliant! I managed to catch your Thameslink one a while back, now I've got a new one to find!
When I get my train on the way back home for Christmas from London to Bath I'll be listening out for you Geoff!! Can't wait
I live in glorious Swindon 😀 the description of the station from he book The Curious Incident Of The Dog In The nighttime is still very much true
i could not get on with that book... being on the autism spectrum as i am, to try and read it from somebody else's "autistic" point of view... it just grated...
@@matthewdunderdale8685 I saw the National Theatre production before i read the book, i was in tears as i realised that i was watching me, at 47 i saw i was on the spectrum, and not just "difficult"
Yo ho ho, merry Christmas scallywags
Kim Jong-un you're everywhere!
This is ironic coming from the leader of the hermit kingdom
Shut up you nuclear bastard!
Kim Jong-un Wondering if you'd record a Christmas message for GWR? Bewhere of Nukes on the line?
Kim Jong-un *swiss001 intensifies*
And another great video! I love to follow your passion and the musical choices for your vids. Hope to see a lot more
Awww such fond memories ... I met my wife - kind of - in Slough. We were on a GWR (or then First Great Western) train from Paddington to Reading and the train had an emergency stop at Slough (we do not know why), with alarms sounding in the train. She sat next to me throughout the trip but we didn't speak or look at each other. But when the train stopped so abruptly with the smell of asbestos from the brakes and all I turned to her and said "well this can't be good, can it?" ... best pickup line ever ;-)
I feel so sorry for you, having to come to Swindon. To be honest, I'd never want to go there.
Oh, wait. I live in Swindon 🙁
Swindon aint bad mate, you have the cheapest rent in the country in terms of percentage annual wage, try living in London where 40% of your wages go to rent.
I’m sorry he had to go to Slough.
@@TheSniper9752 That is true. Swindon isn't a bad place to live, it's just there are hardly any interesting things to do here. If you go to the town centre, all the good shops have shut down.
I'm from Swindon but I moved to California 14 years ago. I always go back to visit it when I can though. In fact,I managed to watch a program about crime out here recently and it featured Swindon. lol Told my kid, that's my old hood! :D
Dylan Clark-Webb Pity from Fairngdon mate
Your videos make me feel happy! Thank you Geoff!!!
That was totally a geek out moment Geoff! Good job man!
That’s bloody amazing Geoff! MERRY CHRISTMAS!
Thank you for showing me the CartoMetroLondon map. This map fascinates me, as it actually shows the correct path for the Piccadilly line and I can follow it accurately like when I came to London in 1993 and got off at Russell Square, and my hotel was nearby. For some reason, maps fascinate me and the tube was like one big map I could easily get around when I was there. Thank you again Geoff.
Congratulations, Geoff. Such an honor! Merry Christmas!
Living in Swindon and using GWR quite a bit, I look forward to your dulcet tones. Interesting to see the people behind those announcements I hear all the time.
I really can't believe that they record these with those guys LOUDLY chatting in the background... Shocking.
Nice one Geoff! I am picking my daughter up from Tiverton Parkway station on the 24th, i will make sure i am at the station a bit early so i catch your announcement! Merry Christmas to you and Viki.
Now we just need you on Southern and their stations!
This should officially be declared as a quite amazingly good clip.
The bin bags video you made is still one of my all-time favourites. Who knew bin bags could be so interesting?
Excellent video as always. Wonderful if your voice is at Coombe Junction Halt. 😉 Wonder if the help point is stall saying "please wait"
I'd love to hear on the "See it. Say it, Sorted" Announcement. At least at one station at some times a day would be brilliant 😄
I’m so happy! That’s amazing Geoff, congratulations 🎊
I love the big smile on your face at the end hearing your own voice :D
I like that bit tsch-tsch-tsch as the gantries go by and the cut-cut-cut. that's good.. thanks. Oh and G-W-Aha!
This is so cool! Congrats Geoff!
Love your enthusiasm!
The smile on his face when he hears himself is just magic!
cant believe im watching this at 9 in the morning in aus
you are such a nerd
but so watchable
merry xmas from australia
Heard this announcement when I was waiting for my hour late train home from school. Classic GWR
I really like you videos. So informative. Thank you
This is entertaining to watch. Merry Christmas!
Making the W in GWR taller in the captions was a nice touch.
Geoff I love how you are helping the train network! Easily my favourite youtuber.
Your face while it was playing at the end was priceless.
That's such an amazing experience, so happy for you!
When i saw the reference to "Gwr Christmas" in the title, thought you were showing off your Welsh again :-)
I'm so happy for You Geoff. 👏
*distracted* Oh, NSE logo! :) Your face when the announcement is made! Hahaha. Nice one.
Merry Christmas and a happy new year
Great video Geoff, but honestly you should know how many GWR Stations there is... after all you visited All the Stations (shame there no plug emoji) and as for that map at 7:14 you can get that map in a book with the rest of the network, called 'TRACKatlas of Mainland Britain' which Platform 5 published but it does cost £27.95!
I knew it was you on the announcement at hesrhrow... I had to listen to it loads to figure it out. Man your a lucky guy
Things to do before Christmas: visit a GWR owned Station at aether 03 or 33 minutes past the hour. Great video as always Geoff.
Now it’s time to do a voiceover for Amtrak on the other side of the pond. I’d love to hear your voice making announcements at NYC’s Penn Station. Or, do announcements for the Long Island Railroad. It would be interesting hearing a Briton try to pronounce names of Long Island towns. When it comes to names, Long Island is just like Wales. There’s Amagansett, Syosset, Ronkonkoma, Wyandanch, Patchogue, Quogue, Mineola, Massapequa, Wantagh, Speonk, Yaphank, they look easy compared to Welsh but are pronounced differently than you think they are. Heck, you should be the next voice of “mind the gap”
You had to choose wales
Speonk
All announcements be like "we are sorry for the delay, there was a wooden stick on the railway"😂
I know it's not Long Island, but my favourite name on the East coast is Poughkeepsie. In the Mid West, it is Oconomowoc, WI and second best is Menomonee Falls, WI. Strangely satisfying for a Brit.
Assimilated Native American names seem to exist to be Shibboleth. If you trip over something like Wyandanch or Chappaqua, we know you’re not from the Tri-state.
Your face everytime you heard your own announcement is such an aww! ;D
I'm here to hear the voice of GWR Christmas past.
Carto metro may have the best collection of track maps, mostly French trams but also London underground+some rail lines and NY subway map.
Kudos to the guy who does this all by himself !
7:21 was my exact reaction to that track planner 🥵 to much of my boyfriend’s eyeroll 😂😂
Merry Christmas Geoff and a wonderful train filled New Year
Good job, Geoff & Merry Christmas!
WHY I MEAN WHY are those other guys TALKING aloud whilst you're recording the message? Unacceptable. Outrageous! Well done, Geoff.
The voice of Christmas yet to come.
So one of my favourite youtubers is now the voice of my favorite railway operator! Nerdgasm
This was a fun video to watch. You appeared to enjoy doing this one.
So cool! Merry Christmas!
If it were me I would be tempted to do a Michael Buffer thing "Planning to take the GWR this Christmas? Uuuuuuuuhhhhhhh LET'S GET READY TO RUMBBBBLLLLLLEEE!!!!"
Pretty damned epic! My dad - his dad, his 3 sisters, brother and numerous cousins - were on the GWR when trains were trains and you got smut in your eye if you leaned out the window 🚂 😀
Thanks for this, I'll tell my daughter to check out the train times. Really useful!
§ Smut - the old word for grit/smoke from a steam train. Just in case anyone didn't know...
Been keeping an ear out and finally got to hear you today at 17:55 at Wokingham :)
Ha ha love how proud Geoff looked when he heard himself! Shame the speakers appear to be from the 1960's and failed to capture the bass tones of his voice.
Wow! I commute between Bristol and Swindon by train 4 days a week for college - I thought the voice sounded familiar. Congratulations, Geoff!
OMG this is Amazing woohoo 🎉 ❤️
Love from London, England 🇬🇧 ❤️
Heard you at Filton Abbey Wood the other day and spent a few minutes thinking about it! Made my day tho tbh. 😂
I have and idea for a new mini series. You do weird little stations. An example would be my local station, cheddington on the WCML. Just an idea
The Geoff Marhsall in Swindon! Please do some more behind the scenes stuff. I teach film at a college in Swindon and I love showing the students some of your videos. I love demonstrating how people like yourself can have great fun making videos for a niche audience and still have a hugely successfully channel.
A day out in Swindon. Lucky you! (I do live there btw!)
When were you here?
Swindon, the heart of the GWR with the steam factory - in my opinion, the best train museum in the country
So now I need to head down to my local station (Bath Spa, if you're counting!) just to listen to this.
Brilliant stuff Geoff Well done 👌🏻
"This is the voice of the mysterons ... please mind the gap" - sorry couldnt resist! (probably showing my age there!!)
Fingers crossed I'll hear you when I head home from Uni later this month
i might just have to sit at the station after work to hear that next week
I went to Cambridge today and your voice came on the PA system. It was the slow service from King's X. You said something about cancellations at the weekend and planning ahead.
Well done Geoff! The voice of Christmas 😁
oooo congrats. Might be hearing a wild geoff on a train soon! :o
Please plan ahead, the railway is about to be upgraded
I am so jealous. I want to do an announcement sometime. :(
Might find out who decides in my employer, and track them down one day... Heh. If I do, I will recommend you too, Geoff. :3 Merry Festive period!
Heard you at Totnes station and figured it was you hahaha!!
That's cool that you got to be a PA voice for a day! (actually every day til christmas!)
This one is clearer than the previous one Geoff.
I was on the Thameslink service up to Peterborough a few weeks ago and I'd completely forgotten you were doing the announcements. I was really confused when I heard a familiar voice over the PA!
So looking forward to hearing you in Penzance.
Waiting for the inevitable “Due to RMT Industrial Action, Northern advises passengers to plan ahead for [insert dates here]”
