I collected live specimens for marine aquariums in the Pacific Northwest for over 40 years. For certain species, underwater fishing was my go-to. I used to take a short rod with a single action real. Too bad I retired before GoPros and RUclips. :)

Awesome! Loved seeing those lings! On the Pacific Northwest Coast Indigenous spear fishers used to tie a greenling to the end of a bull kelp line and drop it to the bottom from a dugout canoe, then one would pull the line in rapidly from the bottom to the surface, and the other would spear the lingcod that followed the bait. Now I see how well such a method could work! Great stuff bro!

I totally agree with you Michael. A kayak clipped off to a piece of bull kelp with a kelp clip. Or, a home made kelp skimmer board attached to you with a float line would be a little piece of mind. Plus, you'd have a place to put your catch.

This is awesome, never seen this before. Open up the reel and grease everything to try and keep the saltwater out, then rinse it off or take it apart and it should last longer. Maybe wear a life vest too if your plan is just to stay on the surface. Whitewater life vests are just two big pieces, one on your front and one on your back, that would keep your arms pretty free for swimming.
