    I have never followed a kicker till this guy showed up out of nowhere . What a story pretty awesome. Kicking his way to a bigger payday. He will be a fan favorite wherever he plays just because nothing was handed to him, he earned all of it so far. Wait till he gets his first 60+ yarder in the NFL, immediately we will wondering can he hit a70 yarder. Hell of a expectation , but this kid might be the guy to do it.

    • @jt4jt4
      @jt4jt4 8 месяцев назад

      Exactly. I hope he gets to the NFL and tears it up, but kids that can hit from insane distances in practice or similar conditions aren't particularly rare. My school had one a few years back, but we never saw it in games. There's a reason that this kid wasn't already well-known from his success in college.
      Additionally, there's the issue of lack of long-distance FG attempts in the NFL; if you miss, the opposing team has the ball in great position and, with the quality of players there, will probably score easily. The UFL will do things that the NFL would not for entertainment value; the fans aren't as invested in whether teams win or lose but want to see an entertaining product, and something like this fits that bill very well.

    Cleveland browns had a kicker do a 73 yarder when i was little. He wasn’t the punter but the kicker. Not sure if the 73 yards included the distance from the end zone to the goalpost. I don’t remember.

    Bates is a really good kicker and he has a huge leg. The only reason he was relegated to kickoff duties at Arkansas was because he was behind Cam Little (just drafted this year), who was Freshman ALL-SEC/ALL-AA the year before. Even as a kickoff specialist he was a huge asset. The only time we didn't have a touchback is when the coaches wanted him to kick it short--otherwise it went through the back of the EZ. Glad to see him showing off his place kicking abilities in a game situation.

    Sorry to reveal my ignorance but I don't follow American Football (wrong side of the Atlantic!) but I'm surprised the kicking team have to retake the kick when the defending team commit an offense. The kicking team have to repeat the kick, absorb the pressure and risk a mistake desppite having already scored the points?

    When I see young men like this. All I see, when he was 10 years old, he walked 6 blocks to the High School football field, and with his ONE football, practiced until he was called home for supper. THAT is how you get good at ANYTHING… Practice, Practice, then when you are so tired you can't stand up, you PRACTICE for another hour. You do this because 99.9% of people will give up, after the first two hours of practice, you stick out that last hour, and you WILL be better, stronger, faster.

    This is super cool. When I was a kid playing football (in Vancouver, BC) I was the kicker and punter, on top of my linebacker duty's, and I hit a fifty yard field goal when I was sixteen, and my punts were a solid forty five-fifty five yard range. It's nice seeing a kicker getting some attention.

    It took 43 years for Tom Dempsey's 63 yd field goal record to be bested. Now it seems a lot place kickers are routinely nailing 55 plus yarders, like it was a gimme. I remember commentators at the time (1970) speculating it was a record that would probably never be broken, specifically because they felt Dempsey's partial foot gave him an advantage. What is the explanation ?

    • @arnavsrikanth
      @arnavsrikanth 22 дня назад

      Kickers are getting a lot better because of more advanced training regimens. They're not really "competing" against someone in the way a WR would compete against a corner. or a DL against an OL. So them being better isn't really being neutralized by the guy on the other side of the line of scrimmage being better too. It's kind of how runners are way faster nowadays than they were 50 years ago.

    Caitlin Clarke comes to mind, only for the dirty little play near the end of this video, when the opposing team player rolled towards, and hit, his leg.
    He needs to not watch the result, but protect his legs above everything. These teams will target his knees. Those knees are his ticket to a huge career.
