Who is still struggling to get fluid kicks at head level?
I truly believe you CAN kick high. Just remember to work proper technique, build hip strength and use proper stretches daily.
If you didn't learn this as a kid or teen it maybe more difficult but it's doable. This is exactly how you do it. Get a stretch machine foe doing splits as well.
This is fantastic, I'll def be using this at home. really helpful video, I can headkick with my left leg but v little power. I'm interested to see how much I can improve over the next month or so.
Gabriel, you should make a video of your opinion/analysis of Tawanchai.
question if i can ask, so does the feet have to be flat on the floor, and i take it you need a straight back ? sorry if this is a stupid question, but i dont know :-) thanks for an amazing channel
Regards Michael Weber
@dubs15 I'll reply for Gabe until he does. Your feet need to be on the balls of your feet. Not flat. When you throw the round house you pivot on the balls of your feet and shift your weight from the center to the front leg. Once the round house is thrown with either the ball of your foot making contact or your instep, you may pull it back quickly or your may follow through spinning 360 dg for full power. Gabe is going to say pull it back for practice purposes. He is right, muay Thai will follow through generally instead where the focus is power. Your more important stretches for this kick are as he has shown and Also the running man stretch and lunge stretch also putting your face to the floor near your front foot making sure to have the knee perfectly at 90 dg. Hope that helps. There is also the muay Thai technique of not pivoting the front foot and instead opening your hips and turning them over putting flex strain on your stationary leg. This is faster and less telegraphed and requires alot of practice.
I am 61 and have been doing Muay Thai for about 3 years. I could never kick above waist level with my round kicks. Your techniques in this video helped me kick to neck level with good form for the first time. Thank you very much.
Keep working man big respekt for you
Your 6 foot 1 or 61 of age
Good job!! How long did it take you??
wow nice man
im 36 & i still cant kick neck D:
Great to hear this! I started Muay Thai 3 years ago when I was 49. Love it, and good to know someone older than I also does it!
of course this video hits 4:14 when my mom walks in my room
Hhahahahahah 😂
People would pay for this kind of advice, and yet you give it for free. You're pure gold, Gabriel.
He is getting paid for it🗿
Lol
That last stretch... I can't afford to do that in public hahahaha
HAHAHAHA
I have seen some really tough guys doing them in public and belive me you dont want to mess with them, they do it all day and yell, they dont give a fuck
The windshield wipers are brutal but so effective! Great video!
This channel is trully a gem. So much good information for free its insane
I've been practicing kickboxing for 2 years and a little bit, I started late at 35 years old. No one there teaches me these things that I see with you and I can train outside the gym to be much stronger in it.Thank you!
I am 31. Did you find any challenges being over 30?
Hi, just wanted to give a big shout-out for hooking me up with this condensed gem. Seriously appreciate the fresh approach to teaching my students, especially those who aren't as fit as the younger crew. Much love and thanks! 🥋🇵🇭
Excellent video Gabe! I'm starting training it tomorrow. I just love you succint videos, straight to the point. No unecessary waffle. You are the man🏆
Thank you so much for this video, I am mid forties and have been training Krav Maga for the past 9 years, in all that time I have had a goal to achieve a head height round house kick. I have been stretching 4 - 5 times a week, using the strengthening excersises you have in another video, have watched every high kick RUclips video, but could never get above chest height. Well this evening I reached my goal, I used the shoulder technique you suggested and managed a right (weak) roundhouse to my own head height. I am delighted, thank you sir. Now to work on the left side.
Thank you so much, i didnt realize that i was putting my shoulders backward and that it was limiting my hability to kick high , keep it up!!
I work shirts and dont always get to attend the Muay Thai classes and have to train by myself. I cannot thank you enough for taking the time to make these videos available for us.
Much love from Finland !
I love your channel. Of all the martial arts channels on RUclips, I feel like yours is the most legit and practical. You have that wall of credentials behind you to prove you know what you’re talking about.
Just a couple of weeks ago I started doing splits to improve my kick height, but I was unsure about how to go on improving, so I'm gonna implement all these techniques on my training starting today. Thank you Gabriel!
Happy to help!
@Synion I'm actually thinking of doing splits as well, to improve the range and height of my kicks. Are you doing side- or front splits? And do you feel like doing splits has made a difference? I am very curious.
@@opus_XI have been practicing side splits for a while now and I have noticed my kicks getting a lot higher so yeah I would say it helps a lot
How is it now?
Great video! thank you
This helped me. The shoulder alignment was more intuitive to me when trying to learn on my own but I wasn't sure about head placement.
I'm looking forward to trying out the stretching exercises you suggested.
Thanks for always giving the technical advice on your channel!
Man, today is my first day. I'm committed to doing this. I was 285 lbs. Now, I'm 187. I am looking to be 150-155. You have no idea how much you've helped me. God bless and thank you.
Good sht my man. 10 months ago I was 390 and just couldn’t take it anymore, I’m currently 270. I’m kicking into another gear now until I’m 190. We got this buddy
Thanks for all ! It works !
You’re the best
Excellent video man, exactly what i ws looking forward
I've only just started martial arts training, so this comes at a perfect time. Thanks.
Also you are right. A quick short session is a lot more realistic if you're busy with tons of other day to day things.
Best content on the subject on RUclips. Started at 35 and already doing things I thought impossible 2 months in.
I started doing some of those hip openers just incidentally with some yoga practice and they really do get to the root of the problem, at least for me. I do a lot of sitting both as a student and now working. Both internal and external rotation of the hip gets so limited because the hip joint itself is like a rock. If you're a runner, you build this in when you run. The activity drives that tightness because it promotes stability of the leg when you're very tired. But that also means that if we're going to loosen all of that up, you really do need strong legs and glutes supporting the joints. This specific movements are fantastic and really do help! 2nd degree TKD black belt here.
Great tips! Just what I needed. I added these to my workout.
Thank you again ! Much needed
This is the video I needed to see, thank you!
Thank you! As you say in all your videos, it is all about the small details and consistency.
Great video ! Thanks !
Awesome. Thanks Gabriel!
Wtf Gabriel. I just focused on letting the shoulder come forward and now i can immediately head kick without falling over. This is insane.
Bro i gotta try this in the gym later!!
Just want to say that your videos are great, informative and concise, love it
The timing of this video is impeccable. Drilled kicking techniques in my kickboxing class today but left still feeling like there’s so much to improve on. Would love to see that long video for opening up the hips, building mobility from hips and kicking techniques. Will continue to use this video to improve my high kicks! Thanks so much for your explanations Gabriel! Been doing your abs drill daily and have seen so many improvements in strength and overall form in class.
How is it now?
I need this. Great video, thanks!
All your videos are so helpful. Great work,

Nice insight
Love your videos Gabriel, no nonsense straight to the point, pure valuable information. It takes many years to build up all this knowledge in practice, knowing what is the best method, what to spend your time on. Respect.
Perfect. That's what I'm going for
Thanks so much for this video. My hip flexibility and strength - really my whole lower body mobility - is my biggest fitness weakpoint. I am going to start doing these exercises today!
Can you give me an uptade on it please?
Thanks for sharing. Appreciate it.
Really nice video. I've been doing some exercises from your other vids and its done wonders, but this is really nice 4 condensed exercises that get me where I want to go! amazing, gonna do all of them from now on.
Wow I Excellent video. Eye-opening. Pinpoints the problem with precisely the stretching exercise needed. It hits the nail on the heard. Not only that but you also show how the shoulder, and the hip must flow together.

As a M.A guy, (not professional),I want wholeheartedly thank you for this video. I tried a lot of stretching, kicking drills etc. But still could not kick head level for prolonged times. I am so going to train in this method. Thank you again.

Getting back into training/sparring at 40, this is going to be a HUGE help for me! Really appreciate all of the time and effort you put into this channel, - all of the info, exercises, drills, and training tips have been invaluable in getting back into the sport.
Same here, I'll be 41 in November and I just started working on my flexibility to get my high kicks back for my combos.
Same, only 38 but that flexibility really is an issue and following Vargas advice has helped a lot when working on enabling better kicking mobility.
Still takes a *lot* of time and effort to regain the strength and mobility necessary for higher kicks.
Hey, young ones! ;)
Turned 42 on September 26th and just started Thai boxing after a 20 years break.
From beeing really flexible to feel like an oak tree that not even a hurricane can bend.
Good stuff, thanks!
Thank you!
thanks for tips man i am very grateful !
This is exactly what I was looking for! Subscribed!🤘😎
Thank you sir it really helps
Great tip about the shoulder, just that alone has improved my kicks!
Bless you, buddy!
Great video ! 💯
Exactly what I needed. Amazing ?
20 years ago I was able to do it naturally without effort or thinking. Now that I've resume practicing kick boxing, I had difficulties to kick high even though my body can do it. Thanks a lot.
I knew that 90/90 is crucial. I have been doing them for weaks and my kick is truly been lighten up. Delightful.
Thank you!
I'm gonna start this routine today!
Yo so did it work?
I will try it, thank you
Thank you, I've been trying for a year and almost there, this should help a lot.
Thank you my brother.
Thank you from Japan. I will try this.
Just found this channel and subscribed. Great tips, thank you.

Thank you for the no BS, high quality content coach!
You bet
really helpful. Thanks.
I'm 45, and I've been really inflexible in my groin, hips, and hamstrings since my 14yo growth spurt. I have tried a lot of stretches and exercises with little improvement. I brought these exercises into my training and I was able to kick head level for the first time in my life after a week. Not super fast or powerful, but I'll take it. Thanks Gabriel!
Thank you Sir
Nice one , thanks
Thank you very much Gabriel
Day 2 and started getting a little bit of a result . Thanks sir
I’m 64 and a 4th degree black belt in Taekwon-do ITF………….this video was great and I will start this routine!!
54 years old...in my younger, scrappy days, I was SO LIMBER!!! Could kick people in the head all day long, splits of all kinds, constantly throwing my legs up and stretching at all times...
Then I got married and fat and unhealthy. After health forced me to go back to working out after seemingly 100 years, I went for boxing...great way to lose weight and get in shape...
BUT...boxing for 10 years now...completely lost my kicking ability. Been trying to get it back and this video will help...THANK YOU!
5 stars Sir " I teach bunch of Kids . this will help me out a great deal ; thank you so much.
Thank you 🙏
Thank you for that I really need that!
Thank you so much for your advice! I'm 29 and i always had the problem that i'm really unflexible. I startet this month with jogging and weight lifting and i just noticed how unflexible i am when i stretched after my workouts. Those kicks are a thing of beauty, i hope i'll manage to kick to maybe chest height one day.
Best vid ever thanks a lot!!
4:18 ayooo 😂
excelente video, gracias por esa buena rutina para mejorar las patadas
Very good and practice based video
Thanks. Your videos are great.
Excellent program
Great video😊
I didn't have great flexibility, kickboxing and taekwondo helped. At the beginning I tore muscles on the inside of both thighs but I was able to kick height. Had a hiatus back in training again and this video reasserts a lot of the techniques I learnt. Cheers Gabriel. Oss 👍
You touched on several points that have held me back. One, I can get my pelvis fairly close to the floor if my knees are bent at a 90 degree angle. But when I straighten my knees (legs), I can't come close to reaching the floor. I thought it was just tight hamstrings or adductor muscles. And you are right about being able to get a wide hip spread in one direction but when you move your position you lose height. That low squat position you show where you move both knees to a side is gold for loosening up your hips to keep your kicks high in all directions. Where were you 60 years ago when I was 20? But at 20, a guy is so loose naturally that most can kick at least chest high without too much trouble.
Gabriel Varga exelent video
Gabriel ur a gold mine God bless you!✊
