Thank you for actively warning us publishers of the content creator / scammer. Especially for self-publishers it is really bad, if people keep your prototypes without making content because prototypes are much more expensive than regular games to produce and also they are often limited, so unless it is 100% handcrafted it takes a LOT of time and effort to create another single prototype. On a more positive topic, I really look forward to seeing you and all the other great people from the community at GridCon! :) My most anticipated con of the year!

I feel your anguish over the "controversy", I organise running events and I get told information about some other companies and their "dodgy" behaviours, but if I told the running community it would seem like me trying to put down another company to boost mine, whereas all I would be doing is warning the unexpecting public, that they could loose money or face verbal/written abuse. So many times I type comments on social media and delete them. A bit like the current situation, one of these companies has just gone boom, owing a lot of people money and it taints the companies doing it the right way.

re: ISS Vanguard - I definitely want to open all of the doors and chase down all of those side quests. I picked up ISS earlier this year based on your glowing recommendation, but haven't gotten it to the table yet. I can't wait to fall down the rabbithole...
re:completing games...i really like the way earthborne rangers handled this. there is a core narrative story which will come to a conclusion one way or another. after that, the world opens up entirely to you. you can explore and search through dozens (more? i don't know, it's a lot) of side quests and it's such a pleasant way to reward players. it makes completion possible for those who _really_ want it or just a world you can return to whenever you'd like.
45:40 i do play carcassonne (star wars version). but immediately after first play we came up with the two same house rules: draw at the end of the turn and hold two tiles at any time. we have a similar house rule for council of four (or any similar game actually): if a game says to draw a card at the beginning of your turn, and those cards don't have game changing effects, we will always draw at the end of the previous turn.
As for ISS Vanguard, I believe if you're thoroughly enjoying the game and see value in continuing, then continue to explore. If however you're satisfied with the experience you've had, then complete the campaign. There's no wrong answer, in my opinion.
I like your use of "width" or "wide" for describing that aspect of Keyside. I think Width and Depth would be good terms for people to use generally to describe the heaviness of a game. For example, Keyside might be heavy as it is wide - even if not as deep as some other games. On the other hand an abstract game like Chess or Go might be heavy as they are very deep - even if not being wide (in fact being very slim). Thanks again for all your great videos

I really enjoyed that game of Carcassonne with you and David, who set it up. Boardgame arena has the "strategic variant" of three tiles in hand, where you get to choose which one you play on each turn, and he had enabled. The dragon graphics on BGA are spectacular.
Carcassonne - way back when I played it (including with my 7yr old) I had a house rule, nearly straight away, of everyone has a hand of three tiles. Much easier for people of all ages when playing and introduces the chance of following a certain strategy.
I'd not heard about this controversy until I watched this video, I don't really look at the BGG forums at all so had completely missed it. I started having a look at the thread and was a little unsure what to make of it but when you spoke about the situation and what you knew beforehand it helped me understand what was going on.

I can't wait to get my hands on The Elder Scrolls game 🤤 As for the "unfortunate" part of the video, I can feel what you might have been going through, but I agree these kind of situations need to be shared more openly between publishers, developers and other people in the hobby, because this individual is the living proof that even a single person can cause major issues to people in the hobby. And that should not be tolerated or easily dismissed by just ignoring him and the likes and not warning others publicly.
Great video! Regarding Carcassonne, I was playing with my son today, so I felt compelled to review the rulebook after watching this 😂. I normally play with the house rule to draw a tile again after scoring in your turn, but couldn’t find anything on variants or house rules in the rulebook. It still just says that the turn starts drawing a face-down tile and ends with scoring, full stop.

Did you ever get into Lord of the Rings LCG? It’s fantastic, especially with the new releases that focus on the best quests in the game (some of the early ones were not as exciting)
Once you complete the main campaign (there is a definite end), you are done - there are no direct links to the follow-up content. We didn't go back to get the Unique Discoveries that we failed getting and we felt fine about it, actually it was really great to get a sense of accomplishment. I prefer Barcelona over Nucleum ;) Cannot wait to play Netrunner!
Husband and I are currently playing through ISS Vanguard too - think we are getting to the sharp end, but have really been enjoying it! We recently picked up Tainted Grail: Fall of Avalon at the HandyCon B&B. Do you - or indeed anyone else here - have any suggestions as to have the best experience possible with the game? I note that you said to play in story mode and that a lot of people found it 'grindy'. thanks 🙂
For ISSV, with 17 games you likely have more than a couple left... It will tell you what is going to start up the end, so no worries there. I'd suggest play it to the end. Better to finish it on a high than risk something in life or other gaming world get in the way for a long delay. Keep in mind, there's two full other campaigns you can return to later. Like you - I loved the system and story all the way through. Looking forward to trying Kings of Ruin probably next year to see how it compares.
In the case of iss. If i love it (and i do) i buy the expansion and carry on the stories Then i move on and come back to play it again at a later date to open up and see other paths then
re completing games: I like campaign games, but when I can finish the campaign, I do it. There are a lot of great campaign games and I don't want to have X unfinished camapaigns in my shelf.
ISS Vanguard, I love the story. When broken from the spell of the story, the mechanics does appear monotonous at times. Sometimes trying to find what you need on the planet becomes real work the 8 to 5 type. Since you’ve been helping me on discord Paul, I’ve gotten a lot further and doing it correctly. More importantly, I have a paper log that documents everything it feels like the 80s and I’m playing wizardry for the very first time. You need the maps you need to go back to your logs to figure out where something could be at. At the same time, my crewmembers are wounded. I’m running low on food. Half my dice are expended and I have no equipment left. I’ve hit every sector at least twice. I don’t want to go. I want to finish this. I had a deal for both expansions that I gave up on because I really don’t know how I feel about this game. Sometimes I love this to death. Other times it’s work. Good thing I didn’t buy the expansions. Like you said, I I have so many other games that are competing for my attention. - PapillonPaladine😊

Thanks also for honesty, but there is a disconnect between your actions and your feelings on the situation. My question is in the next situation where you have information someone is acting badly, even to the point of causing someone else harm (physically, mentally, financially etc), what action would you take? Edit: I'm probably of the mindset that once a game is complete I'm done but my group likes to complete as much as possible. I'm usually glad to be forced into that position!
My response will depend on the situation. For years, this person has been considered to be not causing any real harm. However, a lot of truths have started to emerge and I felt I needed to say something.
I see, that makes sense. A lot of truth can come from open discussions but the timing for that can be difficult. Generally if unchecked behaviours will escalate. Well done for supporting - in case it sounds like I am antagonising, I'm not 😊

But even now, Simon has just replied to another comment left about him saying that everyone is telling lies about him. He has done nothing wrong, and obfuscating the truth by deflecting. Yeh it's a shame as while getting information visible is important for people to make informed decisions, the best case is for that person to gain understanding of their actions.
Maybe the publishers, or rather BGG, should have a shared communication system between then, even something simple as a Google Sheet, when the publisher sends out a copy of their game they record who it is sent to to cover it, and then some comments about the interactions, not necessairly if money is being moved, but how the reviewer is etc. and in my mind the companies can see who is getting x games and if they are doubling dipping, using multiple names/addresses and anything other stuff. Basically have a list of trusted and vetted names on their that smaller publishers can then look to know who they can send copies to. Other things will come up from this, I know, but man you would think something can be done about this.

Unfortunately, I followed the controversy over the last few days. I do not doubt that the reports of negative behavior from the creator are true. I think the OP was right in posting about his experience to provide a warning to other publishers. But, I am uncomfortable with how BGG was used to mobilize a mob to try to cancel him (e.g. remove his BGG podcast). His google search result now features the thread as a top result for his name. A comment on the thread expressing discomfort with the method of cancellation was quickly removed by the BGG censors. This tactic can be used against any content creator who expresses themselves freely and deserves thoughtful discussion.
I was Banished from bgg a couple years ago because I said we should be careful and refrained from condemning and canceling before hearing what the other side has to say or because we don’t like their apologies. I wasn’t even defending the canceled designer. That’s thought police territory. Some classics should be reread by bgg’s moderator.
On ISS Vanguard, personally, i’d do final mission and if you’re still enjoying it move on to the Deadly Frontiers expansion! Love the Netrunner talk - i think it’s the best head-to-head card game I’ve played in 30 years

100% play on Story mode. But not only that... Get the new 2.0 rules for the game and play with those too. Makes it much better.

Maybe the publishers, or rather BGG, should have a shared communication system between then, even something simple as a Google Sheet, when the publisher sends out a copy of their game they record who it is sent to to cover it, and then some comments about the interactions, not necessairly if money is being moved, but how the reviewer is etc. and in my mind the companies can see who is getting x games and if they are doubling dipping, using multiple names/addresses and anything other stuff. Basically have a list of trusted and vetted names on their that smaller publishers can then look to know who they can send copies to.
Other things will come up from this, I know, but man you would think something can be done about this.

Unfortunately, I followed the controversy over the last few days. I do not doubt that the reports of negative behavior from the creator are true. I think the OP was right in posting about his experience to provide a warning to other publishers. But, I am uncomfortable with how BGG was used to mobilize a mob to try to cancel him (e.g. remove his BGG podcast). His google search result now features the thread as a top result for his name. A comment on the thread expressing discomfort with the method of cancellation was quickly removed by the BGG censors. This tactic can be used against any content creator who expresses themselves freely and deserves thoughtful discussion.

I was Banished from bgg a couple years ago because I said we should be careful and refrained from condemning and canceling before hearing what the other side has to say or because we don’t like their apologies. I wasn’t even defending the canceled designer. That’s thought police territory. Some classics should be reread by bgg’s moderator.
