I think its great that you guys at fstoppers make tutorials for profit, it seems like it allows you to raise the production quality and it REALLY makes a huge difference. I do however think that the video titles should state that videos like this are previews or trailers so I don't get that feeling that I was tricked into watching an advert. TL;DR be less deceptive with the titles, the content quality speaks for itself. good job guys.
I've watched many many videos now on studio lighting and yours is by far the most captivating! Its the way you speak to the camera, you grab my attention and its not draining like all the other ones i've watched!
Guys, as soon as i get th funds i will make the purchase!! i don't think your product is over priced, you are essentially compressing an entire career or lighting expertise to a few hours, but people can't seem to understand that! I spent 3 years completing my bachelor in photography, and now im going to complete the master, and i can already tell, i would have learned more from you than in school.
I'm not going to get into a big argument here about this. Our RUclips channel has many more free tutorials and content than it does advertisements for paid tutorials and Fstoppers has been a massive resource for free content every single day. The fact is it costs tons of money to run and maintain the website and these tutorials help support that. If you don't want to buy anything from us and simply enjoy the site then that is fine. I don't know why people get upset over a product for profit when they themselves probably offer little to nothing for free.
Patrick Hall Like for me £197 is too much for video because i'm a student, but it seems like your audience is those who have at least enough gear to have variety so 300$ in the big idea isn't that bad when you think about the convenience of all the info bundled together and how much that info will take you in terms of skills. Some of these courses seem about on par with Karl Taylors pro videos and they are just as much, if not more in some cases!
For crying out loud! The price point of this video is REASONABLE, when I consider that my last lens cost me over 1k. Is some technical investment worth the cost? I just went back through my books-on my shelf and iPad-and they add up to no less than $600 in products. Getting my hands on 4 hours of deep, Hurley-styled video (lots of NY flare and technical juice to boot) is more than reasonable. Keep brining rad content to the world, FStoppers! One day, I would love to connect in person. I've been taking photos for years, and I've never had the balls to publish, but buying and seeing your work is giving me the confidence to move ahead and go public. THANK YOU!
Idris Fashan 'Reasonable' depends on your budget/common sense. For the same prices as this tutorial I can get a one-2-one hands on course with a leading photographer in London.
So many comments about the price, I don't get it. Most people will spend considerably more buying the "next gadget" they believe will make them a better photographer, but they won't spend the money or time to learn proper technique. I haven't purchased this one yet, and I do mean yet. I received "The Art Behind the Headshot" as a gift last year and the quality of what you guys produce is well worth it.
I think it is interesting that as photographers, we constantly complain that people don't pay us a fair rate, Peter Hurley (a master photographer) releases what looks like an awesome product, and what do we do as photographers (...or I should say wanna be photographers in many cases) ...we clutter up the comments of HIS video wining about how his product is over priced. Stop wining and save up...or you are a hypocrite to want people to pay you a fair price for you work.
This might be what I was looking for. I feel like 200$ would be more in my price range at the moment but I'm definitely interested. Tutorial looks fantastic. Great job
Tutorial is fantastic, Peter gives the how the why, goes from bad light to good light in front of you, goes from basic concepts, inverse square law, gives example, to cheap simple set up, slowly to more complexe, precise set-up, and takes time to do that, no rush. Plus very good tips and seeing him interacting with models. Find three photo buddies around you and share the price ;) And omg it's from 2014 hahaha
Omg! You guys did it again. Fstoppers are the best when it comes to teaching techniques and tutorials. GOD! I bought the wedding and Peter hurley headshot and it cost me alot in Riyals :-( hope to get one any time soon. Love u fstoppers and wish to be like u guys one day...
This looks like a very comprehensive tutorial full of quality examples and clear explanations. But, if you cut the price in half and were able to sell three times as many... well, do the math. Maybe something to try for a limited 48 hour period?
Yes, I can relate as well. The more we learn, the more we know how to achieve different lighting concepts with so many different things, from DIY to high end gear.
IN some scenes nd other promos he can actually be seen sporting the Canon f/4 70-200, you gotta be fast with the spacebar though, the shots of gear setup and shooting are very short, because it is a commercial.
We don't photograph a dark skinned female model but we do have a white and black model throughout the entire tutorial. As you can see in the cover photo, Peter does shoot them both at the same time if that is what you are asking.
I'm not sure if I asked the right question. Will the beauty lighting teach you beauty lighting on every skin tone or how to shoot masculine subjects in any tone? Is there a difference for getting the desired effect for each gender no matter the skin tone? Thanks for your help and patience.
You will never be him, that's why he is who he is and you are who you are. You can buy all the books and videos you want, you still will end up with you. If you don't have the talent and or the vision no book or video will help you. Work on you rather then trying to become him. Just make sure you got it to start with.
Andrea Scott I just watched this video again, having viewed it once or twice before, since the time of it's release; yes, it's 11+ minutes of promotion whereas you are overtly encouraged to buy a specific product. This video ALSO provides to ton of free useful instruction and information that, no doubt, a sad subgroup of "photographers" take objection to because of their delusions and insecurities. "Work on you rather then [than] trying to become him." "I get the fact that you guys are video pimps... for $$$." "...selling..machines.. that's what Fstoppers became..." "...it is OUR talent we nurture, not someone else's." Are you fucking kidding me? Quit your narcissistic sniveling and go refund payments to any clients who've been unfortunate enough to have been on the receiving end of your photographic efforts. "Creative Images Photography"...I can only imagine, considering a business name like that. Andrea, what's your excuse? I'm pretty sure the "bullit" point here is that you weren't being sold on nurturing someone else's talent, as scary and self-depricating as that sounds. Whose talent would that be, anyway? Peter Hurley's? As if. Your "High 5!" is tantamount to approving a pool of vomit because it contains chunks sized to your liking...the fact that your spew, in general, does not reflect that level headedness for which you've been so desperate is not surprising, but it is sad.
***** Good points. In some of the other Hurley tutorial videos which essentially are adverts for Profoto gear the emphasis is on the equipment and the message is: buy this gear and you'll get great photos.
Priceless, I live in a dictatoship in a 700% inflation and a professional monthly income of US 4 dolars per month. So I know that learning is the only thing that no one can take from me, as our lifes here are subject to a policemen, or soldier's mood to let you go free, or been shot on sight. in more than 40 years in documentary nature photography, I never used artificial light, however, shaping light or moving around it for the shot you need in situ, is a great challenge. So, if you want the shot you imagined, before been on location, mastering strobist is where is at. Thank you for sharing Fstopper. We travel with three lenses, and now, I carry two flashes and a bright cloth for our jobs, where everyone has to carry their own! Regards Leopoldo Garcia. Note I am sharing this with friends and students as a example how photography can change with the geography. Travel light in life, its a lot easier to move along.
It's a fantastic tutorial, and would be well worth the full price, although I was lucky enough to snag it through the 5-Day Deal. Watching Peter work through his thought process with real models was inspiring. You need some basic knowledge of the camera and a little understanding of lighting to get the full benefit.
Agree, $300 is ridiculous. Peter is a great teacher, but the workshop/tutorial business has got too greedy. I'll stick with Creative Live, where you can watch for free before deciding to purchase, and at a much lower price.
MrSimonj1970 Really? All of our products have been $300 and many people have enjoyed them. I love CL but their tutorials are hours and hours of unedited content which can make it time consuming to watch. Also this tutorial costs us thousands to produce; to be greedy would be to not release this information to the masses at all.
Patrick Hall Maybe I'm just bitter because I can't afford it? ;) Fair comment about the difference in content, and you make lots of great free content as well, so good luck with it!
Patrick Hall The issue is this is for photographers who have really just started in studio and most likely don't have loads disposable income to just spend on a video. Obviously you have to make a profit and that's completely understandable
Patrick Hall 'It costs thousands to produce' isn't a valid argument for charging a high price for a video tutorial. A Hollywood film costs millions to make - but we can watch it for 15 dollars. You could potentially make more profit by selling to a wider base at a more reasonable cost. I think you can get more out of a hands-on course for less money rather than watching a video and believing you can magically improve your skills.
No disrespect to anyone, but how do people expect to want to get knowledge and information for nothing or next to nothing, yet they plan to take that knowledge and use it to make money in their own fields of endeavor? Free or dirt cheap tutorials are awesome yes, but in all honesty, I do not expect experts in their field to put together hours of working information for me for free. That is crazy. The work of professionals has great value, and I don't understand how photographers who constantly face the challenge of persons not wanting to pay us fair prices, cannot get that. At 11 minutes I knew from the start that this could not possibly be an in-depth tutorial and was very likely a promo for a such a tutorial. But even the promo itself has triggered some different ways of thinking in my mind about the physics and anatomy of light and the human face. To each his or her own, ofcourse.
really 300 usd is crazy and I agree with many reviews here.. my friend paid some 200-300 usd for danny diamond dvd and all he learned was how to shoot blindly with 85 mm lens and nothing special.. fstoppers should reconsider their prices
When you compare the price many of our instructors charge for a 2 day workshop, I think are downloadable tutorials are pretty reasonably priced. I'm a friend of Dani but I will say it's a bit unfair to compare another tutorial we had nothing to do with to our products. That's like complaining about a bad experience you had with a Ford to the Toyota dealership.
+MoviePosterDude I have watched videos myself, there is a ton of weird catch light in that tutorial that makes people look sooo alien and strange. Peter Hurley may get shadows and highlights very nice, but the eyes are the most weirdest I have ever seen. Those reptilian catch lights are done by 2 strip soft boxes which you can see in this promo video. Also Peter Hurley is really bad at explaining things, he basically repeats himself like "watch this guys, I'm gonna put this sucker up high (shutter clicks) BOOM now we are talking, now we are in businesses" and over again, and again.
I have no doubt that this video is as amazing as I suspect it is - probably even moreso. Still, that price tag is steep, prohibitively so (in my case, anyway).
I get the fact that you guys are video pimps... for $$$. But what I dont see that is missing in your advertisements for the video is "actual" user experience and how they have gotten better. How many people that buy a "how to" become a millionaire video actually put the video in the player and watch & get results. I wanna see actual user results. Put your money where your mouth is.
Hey Barky, yes that would be amazing but there is no way to include testimonials into a promo made before the product gets into people's hands. I can tell you how many emails we get each week from people who have completely upped their game and have built successful businesses from our tutorials but the best source for reviews is on Fstoppers.com/store in the comments. Hope that helps
+Barky Von Schnauzer A lot of photographers don't understand the "intracasies" of light. Yea, they know about throwing up an umbrella or reflector, but exact light placement details I don't think most know much. I am talking self-taught or amateurs, not pros. Some like me started off assisting in a commercial/fashion studio, but other pros may go to photo school like Art Center or Brooks, and then some are self taught via seminars, videos, etc. So if you fall into the latter category then I am sure this will help improve their work. It may not be for everyone but there are a lot of amateurs and self-taught photogs that can learn from this video.
Wait this is a promo? @#$%^. C'mon guys, please, this is NOT the tutorial. I don't mind that you're trying to make money, but this is on You Tube and I'm thinking I'm going to learn something and not expecting this.
You must love Jehovah your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength. You must love your neighbor as yourself. Jesus the anointed is Lord! Repent and be baptized and believe the Gospel.
Well nope. Guys, 300$ for a 4 hour tutorial is what you can afford when you've already made it in photography. I'd have probably bought ALL of your tutorials if they were about 50 bucks, but since you'd grab 300 for it, i didn't purchase a single one.
The title for this video is false. As many of the stopper titles are. Please title them correctly, just tell us it’s a preview of a course, not the actual tutorial. Wasted my time on this and several other fstopper clips, so much so that the integrity of the titling has now put me of fstopper or peter hurley
SPOILER ALERT*** This is an 11 minute advertisement and not an actual training video. This is probably better inserted as a plug in another video but hey Fstoppers you do you and catfish the hell out of the community. Dont be suprised when the numbers start to go down.
Disappointed with this video. Turns out, it’s is just an advert for a training course they want to sell, despite the heading that promises to teach you something. Not cool guys!
This guy compares the inverse square law in the course changing the aperture and iso infiltrating the ambient light not changing the power of the light and say that the light is soft when is at a bigger distance. In the first video. He knows to make headshoots with the triangular constant lights and make people make faces cool. But this curse of light is a mess. He learn the square law after 30 years and make a course that is a joke. Shabum or Shazam or....
i wonder why Peter is working with you two bozos! Hope he got paid well. What a shame what FStoppers is now, lost your roots. Understandable that people need to make money, but do not do it making it seem you are not in it for that. Peter, you rock dude!
I think its great that you guys at fstoppers make tutorials for profit, it seems like it allows you to raise the production quality and it REALLY makes a huge difference. There’s SO MUCH information in this video if you just pay attention. Hopefully, you’ve found what you’re looking for in the last 4 years.
yes
11 minutes to pitch me? good thing I only lost 8

I do not... as a working professional i can understand why they are pricing it that way. Not everyone can.
I'm not going to get into a big argument here about this. When will this go on sale again?
Video on lightning and all I could look at was how weird Patrick Halls eyes were looking at around 2:20. That was something for the scary movies ;)
I really enjoyed video, and I will purchase this video as well. Never can stop learning. Thank you!
I've seen this same kind of tripod for your camera in a couple videos... what is the brand of camera tripod used in your videos?
This looks like a very comprehensive tutorial full of quality examples and clear explanations. But, if you cut the price in half and were able to sell three times as many... well, do the math. Maybe something to try for a limited 48 hour period?
i like it when the model didn't even blink when the guy is waving a light right in front of him, that's professional!
is it possible to explain camera mode settings in all cases ?
hola, este tutorial tiene subtítulos? si es así lo compro hoy mismo
selling.. selling...selling..machines.. that's what Fstoppers became...
+Mike guitar well, yeah. They dont pay mortgages, or car bills based on people's good looks. They need to make money somehow.....I mean come on.

They seem to be putting out amazing content left and right to make us all better - what's the problem with that again?
whatever
fantastic response.
Amazing lighting setup
What song ?
"People think that they're going to get the answer by making a gear purchase". Great point, I can relate to this from past experience.
Yes, I can relate as well. The more we learn, the more we know how to achieve different lighting concepts with so many different things, from DIY to high end gear.
anyone knows what lens peter use in this tutorial? is it 100 mm L ?
IN some scenes nd other promos he can actually be seen sporting the Canon f/4 70-200, you gotta be fast with the spacebar though, the shots of gear setup and shooting are very short, because it is a commercial.
Does this tutorial explain beauty lighting on dark skinned female models? What about multiple models of different skin tones? Thanks.

It's a fantastic tutorial, and would be well worth the full price, although I was lucky enough to snag it through the 5-Day Deal. Watching Peter work through his thought process with real models was inspiring. You need some basic knowledge of the camera and a little understanding of lighting to get the full benefit.
nice advert but $300 for the video, ouch! If were £39 I'd probably go for it

what happened to P Hurley's hair ??
so sad :(
Gran trabajo, no está en mi presupuesto, pero me gustó.
Wow that's nice
As an photographer. You must to know how to setting your lights
Adorama TV with Gavin Hoey is excellent
The models are awesome, but really i don't like photos....
Thanks
is this just a giant Advertisement or is there actual content in this video?
Only an ad unfortunately

Well nope. Guys, 300$ for a 4 hour tutorial is what you can afford when you've already made it in photography. I'd have probably bought ALL of your tutorials if they were about 50 bucks, but since you'd grab 300 for it, i didn't purchase a single one.
Fear the Light! or pay...
The title for this video is false. As many of the stopper titles are. Please title them correctly, just tell us it’s a preview of a course, not the actual tutorial. Wasted my time on this and several other fstopper clips, so much so that the integrity of the titling has now put me of fstopper or peter hurley
Just like he invented it all :-)
Lemme guess, all the people who want this tutorial for free are Bernie Sander's supporters? lol
SHEBANG!
$300 American dollars. Holy Moly.
the price of the tutorial is $300 .... are you freaking kidding me.
TOOOOOO!!!! EXPENSIVE!!!!!!!
Another advert.
...moderfiers
Edit the video tutorial to reflect that you are trying to make money and not teach the know how.

Another shouty photography infomercial with an over enthusiastic presenter. Give me Karl Taylor or Lyndsay Adler any day.
i wonder why Peter is working with you two bozos! Hope he got paid well. What a shame what FStoppers is now, lost your roots. Understandable that people need to make money, but do not do it making it seem you are not in it for that.
Peter, you rock dude!
Poor marketing ploy. I wouldn't trust 2 of these guys as far as I can throw them. And I'm pretty weak. ha!
...simpified formula
