$3,000 for a headshot??! I live in Vancouver, most people scoff at a $300 session. Looks like I need to sort out a Visa for the US and move to NYC asap.
To be fair, Peter's clients have changed from your average Joe to the top CEOs, entrepreneurs, tv personalities, actors, corporation employees, etc. Yes $3000 a headshot is insane for most markets but Peter has been able to work his way up to the very top in the top most market. A few years ago he used to be $1100 a session and many of his associates in other parts of the world shoot at $300 - $700 a sesson. He talks about this in the marketing section. I bet Vancouver is a pretty good photography market.
hahahahhahahahaahahhahahhahahah 3,000 a headshot, just please! a fucking rip off and a half! like what the fuck are you saying, he's not using the out of the world alien camera. Most photographers shoot the same headshot. Funny world we live in, dont tell me that it doesnt matter what camera you have, its the person whos using it bullshit. I'm paying $3000 a headshot, my picture better be Alienated, MAGIC so GTFO
Wanna get better at head shots? Take more head shots. You can watch tutorials all day long but it will never take the place of practice and experience.
Well you could take thousands and never figure out that there are these things on the face: eyes, eyebrows, mouth...all of which can move and make various expressions. Look at the portfolios out there. Most of them, the people all have the same deadpan look, no variation in affect whatsoever. He's pointing out things in a few minutes that some photogs figure out in years, or never figure out at all. Dunning-Kruger effect is rampant in photography.
Hahah you are funny, if it was that easy then everyone with one year experience and 100000000000 headshots should simply be on top and very good. If Peter never told you about the squinch you will never ever know even if you have a lifetime experience.
Coach Rollie Workouts - Fat X 101 there are many so called headshot photographers with years of experience and their headshots suck as fk, not even close to Peters work and how interesting and good the headshots are.
Even if you agree with this, I don't think that's necessarily a bad thing. The business of photography is still a business, and sales is a necessary part of it. You can't be a successful full time photographer if you can't monetize your photography
I'm curious, how did you come to this conclusion? This kind of putdown is so common, you have to wonder where it's coming from. Jealousy? Narrow-mindedness? If it's from Expertise, then let's hear it. Let's hear the objective criticism or else it'd be safe to dismiss your statement as a "typical RUclips comment. Empty and therefore useless."
He is a pretty amazing photographer and student of people and light. If that constitutes 10% of just his skill set, then it simply makes him an even better salesperson. 9x better? Not really, IMHO, but definitely an excellent presenter, thinker and businessman.
Diesel is right. Hurley has said something similar to this in a previous video. Most of the time it's about the psychology. He spends more time interacting with the client than actually pressing down on the shutter. That is why Hurley is so damn good at what he does.
Yes! Right? I'm glad I wasn't the only one. My ADHD was killing me with the weight of that lens. Plus he's using an old man's camera. Get that man a Sony A7.
The most money Hurley is making is giving these classes. He might have a few $3000 clients that he worked his way up, but in todays market, you can start at $125, because the market will dictate it, and the masses pay for "good enough". I can almost guarantee you will not take headshots for $3K. But I can also guarantee that you will take many $200 or less. And , I dont really know what headshot a client would need at 3K!
I love how they have to add the in-between of the people hyping up the photographer! XD don't get me wrong, we can already tell that the photographer is a pro with his mannerisms and how he controls the scene but it's like a phoney commercial when they have those other guys describing his technique. The old saying goes, "don't talk about how good it is, show it!
It's been the same rhetoric for years guys, at this point....its like come up with something else. Watched this thinking I was gonna see/learn something new and it's the same exactly thing that you've been doing for years...

I'm just simply stating an opinion and by no means wish to imply that this man is not as great as he is... he is a talented and excellent photographer...
I mean he's probably the most well known headshot photographer in the world, charges $2000+ a session, and really has almost single handedly caused the headshot boom to happen in every single city and market. Say what you want about his work and images but his success and influence is undeniable.
This is hardly a tutorial, it' more of a commercial. Seek real advice? Have a look at the Sean Tucker Channel here on YT, e.g. corporate headshots. Just great. Also a good choice: see Picture Perfect Posing: Practicing the Art of Posing for Photographers and Models by Roberto Valenzuela
This isn’t the tutorial though. They even simply said that his last tutorial was four hours long and this next one would be closer to 10. So maybe if you actually watched and paid attention to the video, you wouldn’t be so jealous of actual talent, just saying.

At 00:29, I swear that has to be shot with the Phase 1... @Fstoppers? Great falloff and 3D depth of field. Thanks so much to Patrick Hall and Lee Morris for putting together some of the best tutorials on the market today! XO!
Interesting comment...I looked up the Exif data on that image and it was shot with a Hasselblad H3D-22 back in 2012. This was back when Peter was shooting with his 120mm lens. He has gone through Hasselblad to Phase and now to Canon.

I've watched his CL program and ours is way more thorough. I love CL and the fact that you can watch it for free when it airs, but my goodness is there a lot of dead time when instructors are setting up and answering questions and contests, etc. It's good content no doubt but we try to edit everything as tight as possible so there aren't dead spots. To each their own though.
Yes, this is based most closely to his book which was published a year ago. It's leaps and bounds more content and techniques than the first Art Behind the Headshot in an easier to digest format (video). Our goal was for Peter to teach everything he knows with real people in a much more polished video than the first tutorial.
The distortion is a good feature though. Peter's images used to be even more distorted back in his Hasselblad days but if you look at a photo taken at 100mm vs 200mm (which requires stepping back), the 200mm sometimes looks a bit unnatural and flat. 50mm might be too warped but around 85-130mm, something interesting happens. -P

Fstoppers Thanks for answering, but what does she actually do with her hands? It looks like if she have her hands in her backpockets of her jeans or something.
If I was an Abercrombie model for 12 years then randomly started a photo business with the connects I have, shit I'd charge 20K for a single headshot lol. Just buy 3-4 constant lighting lights and 1-2 strobes for fill light and set them up in a way that accompaniment the talent's face and learn how to talk to people (just bullshit as much as you can) and learn basic facial expressions and pay attention to their hair and what in general makes the individual people look good when shooting and avoid awkward bullshit poses - that's all, no need to look up to dudes that just got lucky based on connections “attention to detail" isn't that what all photography is about? If anyone has photo questions feel free to ask me I won't charge you money for it at all and if you are in need of headshots in Los Angeles area I charge 300 per sesh (retouched and everything) ;-)
I'm glad you like our editing but we don't think we are that great at it....we should share a few of the little things though. Maybe we will make a free video on it

I have my very first Corporate headshot shoot in three weeks times, I wasn't even sure whether I should take it or not because I've never worked with studio lighting or any indoor shoot ever, I have to rent out equipment I'm working on a budget. Do you have any advice or tips on what I should do?
Sorry to be "that guy", but the promo image for perfecting headshots, has lighting reflections an glare in Peter's glasses. Again, but being a jerk, but either raising the height of the light, or tilting the subjects head down, or even slightly tilting his glasses down would eliminate that.
never tilt head down with someone with glasses. that is photography 101, tilting down will bring their eyes closer to the top rim of the glasses, making them look like they have small beady eyes. Always angle the camera to the left or right of the glasses to remove glare....move the camera, not the subject.
